2 S u l l i v a n T r a i l A s N e w s P a g e 2 FROM THE PRESIDENT S GARAGE Planning for our 10 th Anniversary Celebration is continuing with more details firmed up since last month. Here are some specifics: Insurance we have through MAFCA and their policy with JC Taylor will cover our hill climb. I ve had several communications with JC Taylor (Tom Meakim) and Doug Linden, MAFCA President, about this coverage. Provided stock (e.g., no hot rods) Model A s are driven up the hill one at a time (no racing with other Model A s) we are set. Jeff Barber will secure a second insurance policy to cover the hill climb to add assurances that we are covered. The Waverly Fire Department and the Waverly Historical Society are on board, we re awaiting Town approval, Jeff is certain the Town is 100% behind the event. FD will handle traffic control & chicken barbecue. At our last meeting volunteers stepped up to organize the Model A visitor s check-in table, to explore a bake shop that can make a specialty Model A themed cake for us, to put together some freebies for A visitors, and to provide a brake shoe arcing demonstration. Thanks to all, if I ve missed something here it s because I ve inhaled too much A exhaust. We will visit State Line Auto Auction after our Sayre Museum Tour on May 12 to get a preview of the Anniversary Celebration + we ll have questions and answers time with Jeff. Please plan to join us for this day. I mailed our MARC Region affiliation application to the MARC office on April 11. I have free copies of the Club s last 10 years of activities that were shown in a slideshow at Tuesday s meeting; ask for a copy if you didn t get one. All for now, Jim What do you call a used car salesman? A CARDEALOLOGIST April 10, 2018 Meeting was called to order by club president Jim Morris at 7:00 PM with seventeen members present. A motion was made by Larry and second by Ron to approve the minutes of the March meeting as submitted in the March Newsletter. Motion carried. There was no Treasurer s report since the Treasurer was not available. The trip to the Maple Festival is scheduled for April 29. Those going will meet at the Bulkhead Hardware at 8:00 AM to travel as a group. Andrew Jackman contacted Jim with information and pricing about his Model A fuel filler extension. Please see his web site or talk to Jim if you are interested. Rusty Gould of MARC contacted Jim relative to our club joining MARC. A motion to join was made by Bob and second by Don. Motion carried. Sayre museum tour was scheduled for May 12. We will meet at Bulkhead Hardware at 9:00 AM to travel as a group. After the museum visit we will travel to Reese s for lunch and then on to State Line Auto for 10th anniversary discussion with Jeff. Anniversary discussion: Groups (Fire Department/Historical Society) participating/supporting the event will share in the proceeds generated. Jeff will administer. Jeff will have insurance for his property, including our Club, for the hill climb event. Jim spoke with JC Taylor rep about insurance under MAFCA s policy, we re covered. Welcome booth will be staffed by Ginny, Bonnie, Barb and Jessica. Our Club will provide a cake decorated with a Model A theme. Harold will research information on the cake. Larry and Bruce will have a brake arcing demonstration. Larry and Bonnie will put a door prize gift together. Jeff will provide either Tee shirts or hats for the hill climb participants; Club thought hats would be best. Bob Congdon is selling his Phaeton. Bill has information for hats and Tee shirts, tabled until next month. Thank you to Don and Jessica for refreshments. Ginny will provide refreshments next month. 3 S u l l i v a n T r a i l A s N e w s P a g e 3 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT By Bill Haag I bought my first Model A in the fall of It was a 1931 Standard Coupe that had a trunk (not a rumble seat). A farmer friend, Ira Engel, said, "Let's put it in my shop and restore it. He also told me that it will take a lot of time, a lot of money, and a lot of patience. At that time in my life I had none of the three. On March 13, 1971, while working in the shop my friend Ira Engel had a heart attack and passed away. I lost interest and the Coupe sat in pieces for several years. I ended up marrying his daughter, Barbara. We had a child in 1976 and being young and foolish we did not have adequate medical insurance. So, I sold the basket case Coupe to pay the hospital bill. I told Barb that someday we would get another Model A. Fast forward to September I purchased a 1931 standard slant windshield Fordor. We named the car, Henry. On September 27, 2012 my friend Homer Harding passed away and I purchased his 1931 Deluxe Coupe that he had restored. Through the years I have had a passion for Model A carburetors. My son Bill, Jr., has made a special 13/32 socket to remove the GAV from a carburetor. I could go on and on with Model A stories. So let's just say they are fun and make lots of memories. It can be very frustrating. However, I think I may have hit upon the problem. If the throttle plate does not close on* the idle circuit hole in the throat properly it could adversely affect the flow of air to the idle circuit and the transfer from run to idle would be disrupted. It could be that there is a multitude of incorrectly ground throttle plates floating around, or it could be that some of the originals that have survived have become worn such that they do not close on the idle hole properly. May be a bit confusing as written. 5 S u l l i v a n T r a i l A s N e w s P a g e 5 ODDS n ENDS -From the A Era- Novelty buildings constructed to appear like an airplane were popular for service stations in the days before World War II. This aircraft structure was built circa 1929 at a Vico Motor Oil Service station, and photographed on October 1, 1929, at the corner of South and State Streets in Salt Lake City, Utah. The attention-getting airplane structure provided a bit of shelter for the gasoline pump islands under each wing which was lit for nighttime use; the side of the fuselage is decorated with a Vico script outlined in neon. The building behind it served as an office, and for the sales of accessories and gas station sundries. On the far right of the property is a car wash building with a lubrication bay on its left-hand-side, an outside lift is situated between the buildings Thelma Todd, actress. Appearing in about 120 pictures between 1926 and 1935, she is best remembered for her comedic roles in films such as Marx Brothers' Monkey Business and Horse Feathers. Vico Motor Oil and Pep 88 Gasoline were produced by the Utah Oil Company refinery located on the northern outskirts of the City at 474 West 9th North. The building no longer exists, but the location houses a modern Tesoro Refinery today

Firestone established the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio. Firestone relied on other companies to manufacture the rubber. His firm simply fastened the rubber to steel carriage wheels. In its first year of operation, the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company grossed more than 100,000 dollars in profit. In 1903, the company began to manufacture rubber, and in 1904, the firm proceeded to develop pneumatic tires for automobiles. In 1905, Henry Ford placed his first Harvey Firestone and Henry Ford order for tires from Firestone. Firestone immediately hired additional workers, raising the number of employees from one dozen to 130. The following year, the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company produced more than twenty-eight thousand tires and sold more than one million dollars worth of tires. By 1910, the company manufactured more than one million tires. Firestone's innovations in tire design allowed automobiles to travel faster and more safely. Firestone also became involved in producing tires for automobile racing. The first racecar to win the Indianapolis First Firestone store 500 in 1911 used Firestone tires. Between 1920 and 1966, every car that won the race used Firestone tires as well. The company also began to open automotive service stations, where customers could purchase tires and other items for their cars. From 1928 to 1964, Firestone also sponsored a weekly radio program titled the "Voice of Firestone." All of these activities helped to make Firestone a household name by the mid-twentieth century. May 1929 In 1926, the company opened one of the world's biggest rubber plantations in Liberia, West Africa, spanning more than one million acres (1,560 sq. mi; 4,050 km 2 ). Also that year, the company opened its first Firestone Complete Auto Care store (Firestone Complete Auto Care is a division of Firestone that offers automotive maintenance and repair). In 1927, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone took a trip to southern California to select locations for their new factories. Friends say Ford wanted to be near the ocean and picked Long Beach and suggested Firestone go to South Gate. The tiny community southeast of downtown Los Angeles was mostly agriculture at the time and Firestone found 40 acres (16 ha) of bean field to house his new manufacturing plant. Architects Curlett and Beelman created a spectacular fourstory Italianate complex, with its own power plant and gorgeous polychrome murals by Gladding, McBean depicting the tire and rubber-making process. A year after the plant opened in 1928, it doubled in size, and grew to nearly one million square feet (23 acres; 9.3 ha) by Sources: &
