1 Speaker Brian Patterson Chairman, EMerge Alliance General Manager, Armstrong World Industries Brian T. Patterson is the Chairman of the EMerge Alliance, a 501c non-profit corporation established to create application standards for dc power distribution systems use in commercial buildings. The alliance also promotes the development of an eco-system to support the rapid adoption of those standards that includes building owners and managers, architects and designers, engineers and contractors, policy, regulatory and compliance officials, academic and independent researchers, and original equipment manufacturers and system integrators. Patterson s extensive technical and work history in electronics, fiber optics and building technologies has resulted in his holding many patents in those fields. He is also the General Manger of Business Development for the Building Products Division of Armstrong World Industries, a founding member of the Alliance, is a member of the IEEE and an active participant in UL/NEMA/NFPA task groups on dc power, the NIST SGIP DRGS DEWG chairman of the Microgrid subgroup, the DOE sponsored Energy Efficiency Hub and GridStar projects, and the DOE Zero Net Energy Commercial Building Consortium. He is EMerge liaison to the National Electrical Manufacturers Association; the Underwriters Laboratories; the NSF sponsored Center for Power Electronic Systems (at the University of Virginia Technology); the FREEDM Systems Center (at the University of North Carolina); the Power Electronics Research Group (at the University of Texas-Austin) and serves on the Technology Road Mapping Committee of PSMA.

PNC expects the branch to exceed LEED Platinum certification and be its most energy efficient, using 50 percent less energy than a typical branch. The bank features solar connected FlexZone ceilings that distribute native dc electricity to power efficient solid-state LED lighting and controls.

36 for Building Services AC Motor applications are moving to AC/ Variable Speed Drives DRIVES MAY BE BETTER BECAUSE. drives are less complex with a single power conversion from AC to. drives are normally less expensive for most horsepower ratings. motors have a long tradition of use as adjustable speed machines and a wide range of options have evolved for this purpose: Can provide a wide speed range at constant torque. Accessory mounting flanges & kits for feedback tachometers and encoders. regenerative drives are available for continuous regeneration for overhauling loads. Similar AC drives are more complex and expensive. Properly applied brush and commutator maintenance is minimal. can provide starting & accelerating torques in excess of 400% of rating. AC drives may produce undesirable audible noise in some applications. Photos courtesy of BL motor use is up: higher efficiency & torque, better articulation, increasing availability.
37 for Exterior Applications Fast-charging should dominate Commercial & Office Sites EVS24 Stavanger, Norway, May 13-16, 2009 charging is best for away from home charging because: Residential AC takes up to eight hours to charge an electric vehicle, Most fast chargers need only minutes to do the job. fast-charging stations will likely comply with the CHAdeMO fast charge adds mi. range to light-duty PHEV/EV in 20 min. Charging standard of up to 50 kilowatts (kw) & (AC) of up to 22kW. SAE "hybrid connector" standard for fast charging adds high-voltage Photos courtesy of ABB Approx Charging stations exist already, expected to double every year.
