1 Mercedes-Benz Metris sets new standard for mid-size commercial van VIJAY MALLYA, CHAIRMAN, UB GROUP DURING WOMEN'S RALLY TO THE VALLEY, IN MUMBAI (IANS) Apple unveils smart watch, new lighter MacBook ARUN KUMAR / WASHINGTON (IANS) Apple on Monday unveiled its much awaited Apple Watch that lets one make calls, read s, control music and keep up with one's workout regimen all from one's wrist. Unveiling the watch at an event in San Francisco, CEO Tim Cook talked about the watch's time capabilities, choices of finish and watch faces and a series of features called "glances". The watch will notify a wearer with a "tap" when a new arrives. Apple tapped supermodel Christy Turlington Burns to try out the Apple Watch with a video showing her running a half marathon wearing the watch. Fitness features include reminders to start moving when you have been sitting for too long. A new workout app will offer weekly summaries and goal suggestions for the upcoming week. Cook described it as "having a coach on your wrist". Cook also showed off a new MacBook, which he said "reinvents the notebook". "We took everything we learned from creating the iphone and ipad to make something amazing and bold," he said. The new MacBook is thinner than the MacBook Air and weighs only two pounds (nearly one kg). Apple marketing executive, Phil Schiller, described it as the thinnest and lightest laptop Apple has produced. It promises all-day battery life, with nine hours of wireless web use, or 10 hours of video playbook, Schiller said. It also has a redesigned keyboard and trackpad. It will be the first MacBook without a fan and first available in the gold colour that has been popular on iphones and ipads. The event kicked off with the announcement that HBO's streaming service will debut on Apple TV and devices exclusively next month. Cook also announced that Apple TV's price will be lowered from $99 to $69 (about Rs 6,200 to Rs 4,326). Giving an update on Apple's CarPlay offering, Cook said it has now been adopted by all major car brands. He also announced ResearchKit, which will make the iphone a diagnostic tool for medical researchers through open-source software. The Metris, which will be available in Canada starting in October 2015, is the Canadian and American sibling of the Vito, which will remain the mid-size commercial van name for all other global markets. The Metris is a right-sized vehicle with a unique combination of fullsize van cargo capacity and payload but with the dimensions designed to thrive in urban environments. The Mercedes-Benz Metris is already strongly positioned as it offers up to 67% more payload and over 40% more cargo volume than other mid-size commercial vans currently available in Canada. The cargo van's Canadian MSRP starts at $33,900 while the passenger van's starts at $37,900. The Mercedes- Benz Metris promises to easily fit into underground parking garages in urban areas, and can also meet the needs of those who work out of their homes and have a need to garage the van. It also shares many of the functional and efficient characteristics of the Sprinter. The 2015/2016 cycle will see auditions in three Canadian cities including Montreal (August 12 and 13), Toronto (August 17 and 18) and Calgary (August 20 and 21) that will produce six promising designers who will go on to showcase their talent at a national finale group runway show at World MasterCard Fashion Week in October At the end of the national finale group show, an Awarded Designer is chosen by a panel of judges. The Awarded Designer will receive a $30,000 bursary, professional mentorship, coverage across leading publications and a fully produced solo runway show at World MasterCard Fashion Week in March Designers interested in applying for the opportunity to be the next Awarded Designer can visit MBStartUp.com.
