The prez sez Junior / Junior = under 18 Junior = 18 to 60 Senior = 60 to 80 Senior / Senior = 80+ Club perceived age / knowledge Weather wise, it has not been to bad with some good flying weather of late. We have been busy at the power patch with a recent working bee, (thank you to Graham Moffatt and Neville Dickie) putting in the posts for the shade sails that will be going over the seating area, Graham will have an article on this elsewhere in the Torque, the morning was a bit dull but made for some cooler digging. Please be vigilant when leaving the field to make sure that the road gates are shut, there have been a couple of instances when the gates have been left open, we do not want to upset the Farmer as he is very good to us. The most important event in the near future is the Club AGM which will be held at the Merivale Papanui Cricket rooms at 7.30pm on the 5th of March The AGM is your opportunity to have your say in the election of the Committee and also to provide input moving forward so please be sure to attend even if you have not attended a club meeting or a previous AGM, we would be happy to see you there Happy Flying Grahame Hart Notice of the 2019 Annual General Meeting and prize giving To be held on Tuesday 5th march 2019 Condell avenue cricket club rooms 1930hrs Please give thoughts to remits, new committee members (to be in the hands of the secretary by 20th February) or any thing that you would like discussed Last years trophy holders please bring them along Fire danger As you can see there has been considerable growth in the combustible stuff so please, please be careful with every thing that you do we do not want to be the cause of a fire!!!!! Please carry something that could help fire fighting e.g. water, wet sack fire extinguisher etc Please do not drive over or park on, long grass, as hot exhaust pipes could ignite the grass use short grass tracks and parking spaces 2

Minutes of CMAC committee meeting, Thursday 14 th February 2019 at 6B Middlepark Road, Upper Riccarton, 7.30pm Present: Grahame Hart, Gary Burrows, Trevor Henderson, Ian Harvey, Bruce Weatherall, Stewart Morse, Graham Moffat, Bill Long Apologies: Mark Venter Minutes previous meeting. Approved Matters arising: Nil Correspondence In and Out: Information from MFNZ membership secretary on up-dates on membership fees, cards and operating the spreadsheets. Latest spreadsheet was sent also ready for up-dating with present new and leaving members. Request from David Griffin to purchase 3 new landing spots for the soaring competitions (approved). Letter from David Griffin for club to consider increasing airspace height to This is to deter full size aircraft pilots from over-flying our club s danger zone with virtually only 150 leeway above our present height allowance. Secretary to write to Dave to ask him to put this proposal to the AGM with an explanation as to how it will work in our favour and make the flying site safer. Treasurer s report: The balance sheet and bank accounts are in good shape, with the audit for the AGM to be done before the AGM. With the increase in the annual NZMAA fee to Senior - $88; Family $93 and Junior $25, Trevor is proposing increasing the CMAC subscriptions proportionally with a small increase in club fees. This proposal to be put to the AGM. Section officers reports: R/C Power: Two new prospective members flying at the strip. Increased aerotow activity is working in well with the regular power fliers. Runway still requiring mowing even in the dry but dry long grass poses a fire risk; all cars to be careful where they park so long grass does not touch hot parts of the engine, especially those on the glider field and free flighter s. A sail is to be mounted over the barbeque area which has been donated by a firm that is moving overseas. Free Flight: Little activity recently due to unsuitable weather conditions. Tomboy: Yet to start again for the new year but still getting good numbers to the competitions. Soaring: A successful open Radian competition cum fly-in was held recently with participants from CMAC other Canterbury clubs and some non-mfnz fliers. See report elsewhere. Some good aerotow activities with some visitors from other clubs coming to observe the activities. A prospective new member has moved into the area who is an experienced tow pilot and glider guider. Pylon: Activities on temporary hold but hope to get some social fliers involved later in the year. Torque is all under control; Website: Seems to be up to date and really just functioning as an information portal. AOB: Proposed new club logo(s). Grahame H to get all the Murray Race submissions together for presentation and possible voting at the AGM. Some pressure to maintain present logo though. All proposed and prospective office holders have been mooted for confirmation at the AGM. Some nominations may still come from the floor. Working bee to be organised by Graham M to dig post holes for the shade sail. 3

The possibility of a container club room at the site of the present container has been suggested with the present container being moved in a westerly direction. Approval by land leaser may be required. Bill Long gave a run-down of the challenges of competing in indoor on the international scene. He and Kay are off to the states in our winter. Other international competitor from the club will be Dave Griffin in the inaugural international F5J electric glider contest in Slovakia. The election of a new Life Member was mooted. Meeting closed at 8:54pm. The next meeting will be the AGM on Tuesday 5 th March 2019 at the Condell Ave cricket club rooms Minutes of 2018 Annual General Meeting of Christchurch Model Aero Club, held at Papanui / Merivale Cricket Club, 205 Condell Avenue, Christchurch, 7.30pm, Tuesday 6 th March 2018 Present: Members present: 17 Apologies: Marco Wuethrich, Ken McMillan, Les King, Grant Fry, James Blacklaws. Minutes of Previous AGM: Approved (Gary Burrows; Grahame Hart ) Business arising: Nil President s report: Grahame presented his report (as published) which was move to be accepted by Ian Harvey; seconded by Graham Moffat. Treasurer s report: The report was tabled by Trevor Henderson. The indicative budget was close to the actual expenditure and income and therefore no future increases in subscriptions was anticipated or recommended. There was a profit of $ There was some discussion regarding the cost of maintaining the weather station and the gateway ballast, but the latter was free. Moved to be accepted by Graham Hart; seconded by Bruce Bonner. Election of Officers: President: Grahame Hart Secretary: Ian Harvey Treasurer: Trevor Henderson Recording Officer: Gary Burrows Bulletin Editor: Gary Burrows (ex officio) Webmaster: Mark Venter (ex officio) Liaison officers: Free Flight: Stewart Morse R/C Soaring: Paul Chisholm R/C Power: Graham Moffat Vintage: Bruce Weatherall Indoor (ex officio): Bill Long (who will also attend to any control line matters as well) Auditor G.J Smith B. Comm. General Business: The status of the CMAC flying field in relation to the danger zone, and other hazard separations (low flying area along the Waimakariri River and the army firing range) was outlined by John Ensoll. The importance of the maintenance of these was stressed by the members present. The wish of fliers from other clubs to use the CMAC field was discussed and these persons were to be encouraged to join CMAC as associate members. It was suggested that the CMAC flying site landlord Mr Henderson be invited formally to attend an endof month barbecue to allow for more people to make his acquaintance and vice versa. The secretary outlined the simplified registration format for members who have renewed there CMAC subscriptions and affiliation to MFNZ. This is now all done by spreadsheet and or was hoped to be completed by the end of March / beginning of April (but may be hindered by an early Easter this year). The prompt payment of subscriptions was thus stress, with insurance being not guaranteed from MFNZ from the beginning of April until members have paid. The meeting closed at 8:15pm, followed by Recording Officer s report (see elsewhere), prize giving and supper. 4

Down at the Power Patch. The wind at the strip has been a bit of a problem but still got in some Sunday Flying. Good to see the Glider fraternity making use of the strip. It s good to see the strip being regularly used. We have two new potential pilots interested in getting in to powered flight. We are starting some basic flying with them using a trainer and linked transmitters. It s a lot easier when you can bind two transmitters together. We have started the installation of some shade over the pits. We had some Shade Sails donated by Schneider Electric. We located some poles which have now been placed and concreted in by a dedicated work party. Sails still need to be mounted. We then need to wait and see what effect the norwesters and southerly winds have on the set up. Reminder about the high fire risk. The grass is very long in the strip and adjacent paddock. The track from the road to the strip has been mowed to reduce the risk of a fire from a hot car exhaust. Please do not park on the long grass as your car could cause a fire. See you at the Strip Graham Moffat PPPS reports I see that the RC power boys are looking for a new challenge, is it like the downhill slalom course (without the down hill part) or maybe how low can you go once the shade cloths are up. I think that Andrew Palmer thought it up just as a challenge as no one is following him in aerobatics. Who will be the first one re kit his model knowing that there is a problem with landing on the runway for some!!!! 5

Was this you who left the gate open??? (3 February ) Note that the keep open stay has not been put back. I hope not Please don t let this happen. make sure that the latching hook is securely hooked up as I know that it can come off. Sheep can always find a open gate!!!!!! Brand new, two sheets (each.9 metre x.5 metre) of cream Litespan, and a jar of Balsaloc. If anyone interested, either free or small donation for my crash collection. Thanks Bill Fergusson billandlynn@orcon.net.nz 6

Free flight for 3 February 2019 John Beresford Bruce Weatherall and Stew Morse turned up to fly and all decided that P30 was the best option. The steady NE wind that was blowing did not make for good conditions and mixed times prevailed. John B total 218 Stew M total 184 Bruce W total February 2019 Nothing to report except a strengthening NE wind put a stop to planned flying John B, Lynn and Stew M managed and early practice flight with 1/2a Texaco models before packing up with Lynn being the most likely to be competitive Indoor Report for the month of Feb. The events for us this month was N.D.C. Open tissue and F.1.L. It does prove to be a challenge flying both events unless your model is trimmed well and ready to go, remember we only have 2 hours. I returned my F.1.L. Back to as it should be with a new wing, it was flying a little bit rough on the first flight but got better each flight. Kay, well, she was stretched trying to wind her motors to the max and they were breaking, she did say to me later that the stretching the rubber motor to much while winding was the problem. For Nev it was a hard day at the office, I think the model is passed its use by date. Never mind Nev I have some new balsa cut to size for you so hopefully a new model will appear soon. The next meeting will be N.D.C. Hanger rat. Open Tissue. Kay, 4 min,44 sec. Bill. 4 min,40 sec. Nev. 2 min,01 sec. F.1L. Bill, 5 min,49 sec. Kay, 3 min,20 sec. Nev, 2 min,03 sec. 7

Radian day Waitangi Day 2019 saw the first of what is hoped will become a more regular occurrence as CMAC Hosted the first ever Canterbury Radian Fly In. An invitation was extended to all Canterbury Clubs and also to non MFNZ Radian fliers via Flight RC and Social Media. This wider invitation was approved by our club and MFNZ executives, as a way to widen our appeal to non members and show some of the benefits of belonging to a club, and spread the joy of Thermal soaring. 20 registered, 9 of them non MFNZ members. On the day it was reasonably cool and windy so only 12 fliers showed up, about half non MFNZ. We started with a few short chat about the radian, club rules (fire, gates etc) and checked out experience levels. Our club was ably represented by Sean McCurrie, Alec Taylor, Craig King and myself. Landings were to be in a large box marked by cones to reduce the difficulty level. The first few flights were in groups of about half the players and then we flew all up at once with Alec and I taking turns to run the stop watch. Between flights we talked about lift, what thermals looked like etc and on the very next flight Thermals began to appear. Flight between 5 and 10 minutes then became the norm. Great fun was had by all. One Radian was lost, despite drone and foot searches it has not been seen again. The pilot followed another Radian in the sky and when he realized it was not his a few minutes later, his was nowhere to be seen For several of the fliers it was the first time flying to try and extend flight using thermals, a couple were already keen to try F5J and others want to see Scale Gliders, so a worthwhile exercise which I will I hope bring in some new members and perhaps associates from other clubs attracted by our open space and decent height limit. The event was enjoyed by all with some really positive feedback. CRF are hoping to host a similar event soon and I hope other clubs will pick up the initiative also. The Willows is a great place for soaring, I will be keen to host another event also. Regards, David Griffin Christchurch, NZ Ph All photos by Peter Hewson except the drone one (Dave Griff ) 8

Flying planes at a recent Willows Aero tow morning. Photos by Ian Harvey : Alec Taylor gets some glider landing practice; 2: Dave Griffin sets off with his drone to attempt some air to air movies; 3: Ken McMillan hopes the landing wheel doors stay intact during touch-down; 4: Alec arrives back after another successful delivery of a glider to great heights; 5: Dave G turns in preparation for a high speed pass of the strip; 6: Ken keeps is wings steady under spoilers and flaps; 7: Team Chisholm bring the Ka6 in for a perfect arrival on terra firma 9

Now that would be a challenge for the aero tow people to build and fly, No ready built there. Just old fashion balsa and ply bashing. Anybody know the design?? Looks like a side by side two seater, photo is out of a English magazine series. Beautiful EH. 10

SAFETY, GLOW PLUGS and ENGINE TUNING...updated- thru the eyes of big T Safety The propeller of any model aircraft is just like your home handyman skill saw spinning at 16,000 revs or so- treat it with no respect and you'll find that it will challenge you every time. We all carry scars from being hit by a propeller and generally we had to admit they were received by our own stupidity or carelessness. Many engine manufacturers have realized this problem and are now providing engines with a rear mounted needle valve assembly- certainly the additional 50mm clearance should act as a safety buffer. Given the choice you should always purchase one of these engines. E.G. Thunder Tiger, OS, Jett Glowplugs Glow plugs come in a variety of heat ranges and you CANNOT say a #3 plug from manufacturer A is the same as that with the same numbering system from manufacturer B- assume them never to be the same. The only sure way to get the correct plug is to refer to the engine manufacturers instruction booklet and to get optimum performance one has to match the glow plug, propeller and fuel...any variance here will potentially see a performance drop! We are all impatient and some of us have selective reading abilities when it comes to doing things properly and its generally the beginner who gets caught out because his understanding of the 'big picture' is generally lacking...experience is a wonderful thing! Lets take for example some commonly available plugs good all round medium purpose plug for nitro of 5%-20%- readily available similar to an OS A3 and some would regard this as a hot plug...perhaps 5% nitro some would say similar to an OS #8,,,,,,but would need to confirm with perform- the comparison here is an ENYA #6 plug or of a cold variety, so with high nitro. a specialist plug from the USA- available from me at very good prices OS #8 ENYA #3 ENYA #4 ance OS #A5 MERLIN Idle bar plugs should never be used as I have seen too many of the bars failing- they fall off- they are only spot welded- and they then go through your expensive toy engine...destroying the piston and liner as the bar travels through the escape route and out the cylinder ports. Generally speaking when running a high nitro fuel- over 15%- then you would opt for a cold plug, and conversely a hot plug for low nitro HOWEVER there will always be a catch...if the cylinder head has a high volume head ( low compression) then you may need to use a hot plug with high nitro content to compensate. The learning curve isn't difficult but it does take time and can be frustrating...if you are having troubles give me a call. Tuning Two stroke tuning is relatively easy but we should never forget that the carby unit is very crude- yes it works for our use but requires a careful understanding of it to get maximum performance. We only have two adjustments, bottom end and top end and both are very critical and must be set right...to me the bottom end is the important one and the one that tends to pose most problems. 11

The phl page Paul at a Christchurch Nats flying his Lanzo RC 1 in I presume Vintage Free Flight precision OBGGGGG photo Not sure where this photo was taken to make the front cover of Modellflygnytt But his is certainly young, Wakefield of course It has been amazing what I have found out about the talented guy Paul was by going thru his modeling stuff. The paperwork he did in making him the top of his hobby be it nutrition, rubber testing, planning how to run major contests, analyzing various designs to find the right one, recording how he and the model went on the various contests he entered, fitness programs he under took, copying and changing plans to suit, selecting top balsa, communicating with the top people around the world to get their ideas and on it goes!!!!! Club night by Mark Venter s (ghost writer) Our last club night was a dissertation by our esteemed and much traveled Aerobatic expert Andrew Palmer on how to set up our radio control models so that they fly better, a well received enlightenment to those attending. This is part of a series by Andrew and the next enlightenment will be on Tuesday the 2nd of April (as our AGM is on 5th March) OBGGGGG may have some goodies as well to give away/sell.!!!!! 12

Weather Station Phone Number Operating times Monday to Friday hrs and hrs Saturday and Sunday hrs Editorial Manure. # 168, (32 to go = 200 then I m finished) Club website please note change DECLUTTER while I am in the process of doing my old mate, PHL, a favour it has brought to my attention that I need to de clutter, and while I am not in PHL s league, his habit of not eliminating what he had finished with has left a large quantity of modeling goods it is hard to find a good home for, some things e.g. OS pixie single channel / escapement gear now that it has been long superseded (gone to a collector of old stuff) What do you do with Aeromodeller s from 1947 to the present day (he still had a subscription) I am still finding items that haven t been look at for years, all tucked away in cupboards that I m getting to after about 6 visits to Cheviot coming back with a station wagon load each time. SO TAKE THE HINT IF YOU HAVEN T USED IT FOR YEARS IT IS PROBABLY DUMP MATERIAL When your estate clearers come, they are Ruthless (they have no idea that is was what kept you alive for so long and spent their inheritance!!!) HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM!!!!! I have managed to complete the annual prize giving results and what sticks out like a sore thumb is that the true modeler (one, who like PHL, built and flew his own creations ) is fast diminishing ever since the BOM rule was dropped and it seems that money dictates what we do with our Spare time and indeed the cost that is required to be competitive. Fortunately within our own club we have TOMBOY and now RADIAN coming to the fore and while the Radian is a ARF, it is cheap and gives lots of fun as does the Tomboy. The results show that club participation in Soaring, pylon, RC aerobatics are virtually none existent I believe that it is time to review our club, and indeed nationally, modeling structure and particularly the rules so that they encourage the art of construction and friendly competition, Vintage certainly does this but it also needs reviewing of some of its rules to allow a wider range of models competing on a more even playing field. Anyone looking for Aeromodeller magazines from 1947 to present also Model Aircraft magazines send me a as what you would like for the disposal of them. PLEASE, PLEASE label all your bottles of fluids with what they are, the PHL bottles are a challenge at the moment!!!!!! If you are in need of some modeling goods that are hard to find, ask me, as I may have them cheap or to give away provided costs of transport are covered OBGGGGG The older I get, the better I used to be!!! 17
