The prez sez Junior / Junior = under 18 Junior = 18 to 60 Senior = 60 to 80 Senior / Senior = 80+ Club perceived age / knowledge What a difference a month can make, basking in sunshine in May and now we are having some cold and wet days, we have just managed to beat the weather on a couple of Sundays flying between the showers. I have noticed with disappointment that there has been some dissatisfaction expressed by members of our competition groups concerning the payment of associate fees to CMAC if a member has his full subscription to another club. The rules on this are perfectly clear, if a member wishes to compete in CMAC competitions then they need to pay an associate fee, this is no different than flying on a regular basis at another club that you do not currently belong to. If you are competing in an open competition run by a SIG you are not required to pay this fee, Our club rules allow for an initial visit for a perspective member and then 3 further visits with flying instruction if required before the club asks if they would like to join, these club rules have been in place for many years and I see no reason for a change. We are certainly not a mean club - in fact with the facilities camaraderie and flying instruction that we offer we are anything but. Happy Flying Grahame Hart They don t cater for our needs, wrong club. 2

5 june What a wonderful day at least 23 cars at the field Our new member Mike Strange s model with all the bells and whistles. It has SAFE technology and certainly is performing up to expectations because as Mike says for a new chum to R/C aero modeling and learning to fly it couldn't be better Note the fatter wing section covering the ailerons to help prevent tip stall 3

I thought for a moment that our president was adding a rescue container on the side of his helicopter, but no, it is just a muffler to stop the noise complaints from his newly fitted IC engine. Richard Matheson s A320 just waiting for Richard to build up his skill level to handle the first flight 4

The photo story. Top photo Young George Turner with a Old Chap s aerobatic machine, to sort out its problems ( the Old Chap has crashed it several times,) (the manufacturer of the model suggested that the Old Chap buy a more appropriate model for his age and capability suggested Tomboy!!!!!) Middle Photo shows George with the Old Chap to his right returning from 2 successful flights. Bottom Photo Shows George giving it the thumbs up very groovy model 5

Intrepid flyers report by reliable rodway The forecast for Sunday 19 June was not sounding too good however the weather station indicated very little wind. Four turned up at the FF field, Stu Grant, Stew Morse, Lynn and Bruce Bonner. Stu G was intending to fly Vintage precision however the rest of the crew did not realise it was scheduled so he left it for another day. Bruce had a sport model and managed to get a couple of flights in and Lynn and Stew flew A1 and P30. There was initially a breeze from the south in between the odd shower. The breeze gradually dropped off which made it very difficult for us pensioners to tow our A1's up and in the end we gave up and attended to some P30 flying. Stew had a recently acquired A1 with Jedelski airfoil sections that performed very well after some initial trimming. A1 Stew M = 316 Lynn = 142 P30 Lynn = 220 Stew M = 153 Indoor meeting for this month. We flew Hanger Rat (N.D.C.) this month with Kay not present having the flu and Nev used his time testing. One of our problems is that we never get a chance to test or practice with most of the time being used for official times. Of news, is that we had newbie s with us. Andrew and Suetonia Palmer came to fly their brand new Hanger Rat and fly it did, the trim seemed to be bang on and the potential was looking really good. Rachel was flying along with Dad (Dave) managing to get three times in. Dad also managed three flights with the best two getting towards the three minute mark. I actually did manage some testing with a reassembled Rat weighing in at five grams. It will fly but will take some time to trim so it was put away and a proven model was bought out and flight times prove to be fruitful. Results. Bill. 3 min 18 sec. plus 3 min 3 sec. Dave. 2 min 40 sec plus 2 min 37 sec. Andrew. 1 min 58 sec plus 1 min 51 sec. Rachel. 1 min 30 sec plus 1 min 43 sec. Next time at Templeton we will be flying ( F.1.L.) on the 10 th July at 1 pm. 6

Soaring Event notifications We use the CHCHSOAR group to notify the soaring community of weather cancellations and other changes to CMAC soaring events. This works well and is low maintenance for everyone. If you are interested in CMAC soaring, you really need to subscribe. Just visit groups.yahoo.com/chchsoar. If you are already a member of Yahoo groups you can just log in, otherwise just register your and a password. Once you ve joined the group, you will get s about upcoming CMAC soaring events and a few other local soaring activities. ALES events On 11 June a keen bunch turned up to enjoy the good conditions. We flew both ALES200 and the Radian class. There was a steady north-easter which was kicking up some handy wave lift. We chose to go with restricted max times of 8 and 6 minutes respectively, although in hindsight 10 minutes was definitely do-able and would have been more NDC-compatible. Thanks to Neal Blackie who just turned up to enjoy the day and who didn t even fly, but helped us out with timing and funny stories. It was good to have Les King join in with his Radian, bit of a change of pace from Pylon racing! 8 CMAC PYLON RACING 18 June, as seen thru the eyes of Big T Our monthly race meeting is normally full of excitement and close racing, but today because of a lack of numbers we had to run the meeting slightly different to normal and as a result of a lack of 'callers' we had no choice but to do solo times. Big T was up first and only did one lap- I was a bit wide on exiting around number three pylon-and yes you guessed it ended up in trees. Everyone heard the bang, silence, then the noise of the model falling out of the tree...noises like this indicate significant damage and bits of model generally end up being widely scattered and then the job begins of trying to locate the important components, viz engine, radio gear, and then picking up the remains...lucky for me all the bits and pieces were quickly found so we then headed back to the strip for Les King to do some solo runs. And no, the comedy of errors still continued. There is a trick to launching pylon models and Grahame Hart normally doesn t have any problems with launching but that was not the case today when launching Les King's model...perhaps caused by a lack of wind. If you don't get it right then the model will generally head to the left on takeoff and it takes a huge effort by the pilot to get it back on course- whybecause we set the models to fly without too much control so anything drastic requires the use of the ailerons and if you don't have sufficient height then all you can do is cut the engine. If the centre of gravity is located in the correct position then slight deflections of the ailerons and elevator are all that is required to race these models. Typical deflections that I use on the elevator are 3mm up and down, and a similar figure on the aileron- not much but, that s all you need. Anything greater than that has the potential to over control the model. We aim to have 5 heats per class and sadly for Les, and as a result of further launching problems he had 3 or 4 DNF's and only recorded one time. What happened next? They say it goes in threes, and that proved to be the case today. The lights at 'number one pylon' for some unknown reason became very unreliable...although the batteries were fully charged over the last couple of days it would appear that the batteries may have failed or there is some electrical fault within the system. The lights have been very reliable since they were constructed approximately 15 years ago so hopefully no major fault will be found. We held an on-site prize giving and the results are: Quickee Sports 1st 2nd Les King Trevor Henderson What next? Big T will be back to the building board and will need to burn the midnight oil to get a couple of models flying by next race day... Thanks to all the helpers today- I just hope you left the pylon strip amused rather than frustrated. 8

Tomboy 5 june darth vader rules As I m having trouble finding a heading to the days contest please choose which tickles your fancy from the below. How the mighty have fallen from their lofty heights What a glorious day to be out with all your like minded mates enjoying this great spell of weather Didn t I / we do well Great to have full muster of Tomboys for a change It was a day out of the box snow as witnessed by the number of cars already there by 0840hrs (see photo) and by the time the contest had finished even all the frost wary R/C power patch fliers swamped their car park (see report elsewhere) Today was the Darth Vader Dunstan rules run by (incapacitated) OBGGGG which allowed Mr. Dunstan to experience his rules in person. The contest comprised of three tasks Glide ratio, Duration, All up last down, with two (2) divisions 36 (combined electric 2.5 frost minute motor run and diesel 3cc of fuel) 48 (combined electric 4 minute motor run and diesel 5cc of fuel) There was only 1 electric flier Best Man Dunstan Nine fliers threw their hats into the first round GLIDE RATIO in which the flier had maximize his glide time after the motor had stopped which was then divided by the motor run time to give a glide to motor ratio (anything over one (1) was good considering it was the Tomboy) One of the first away was our own bridegroom / winner of the last 3 contests Granddad Ensoll who headed of to his favorite lift spot over the container only to find that there was not sufficient hot air being generated as most of the R/C boys were still in bed (0930hrs) and it seemed that the honeymoon was over as he found that the wife had shut the door on him and he didn t get back into the house (paddock) for a zero score. The best ratio of the day was a fabulous (114s engine 427s glide) by our up coming Dave Jackson using Bryan Coulters 48 (engine now performing after a tickle up by Bruce Bonner, Dave is very happy!!!) Next best ratio was John Beresford s 36 with 53s engine 158s glide for The only other flier over the 2 ratio was Mark Venter and his Doonside powered 36 TB for 91s motor and glide 227s for a ratio of There were only 2 who dropped below the 1 ratio (see results) The biggest problem with this round was hearing when the engine stopped. 9

DURATION was very straight forward and as predicted by those who were concerned that the electric had an advantage by their 4 minute motor run Best man Dunstan topped the standings with a 662 second flight, with the next closest Stu Grant 537 seconds. It must be said that there was lift around if you got up high. It also seemed that if you had a 48 model you had a better than average chance of getting a good score. Mark Venter was the best of the 36 division with 406 seconds. ALL UP LAST DOWN it was glorious to see the mass launch followed by a fall by one of the mighty Best man Dunstan with about a 30second flight to be first down ( maybe the battery I fitted for this flight hadn t been charged!!!!) The results below are in 2 divisions as required by the rules of the contest 36 & 48 and below that is a all in result sheet It is interesting to see that when the results are broken up into their respective divisions the top result in the 48 division changed (this was brought about by Granddads failure to score in the ratio section) 36 Glide Ratio Score Duration Score down Score score Last Total Venter 36D Beresford 36D McCurrie 36D Glide Ratio Score Duration Score down Score score Last Total Rodway 48D Jackson 48 D Grant 48D Dunstan 48E Morse 48D Ensoll 48D Landed out ALL IN Glide Ratio Score Duration Score down Score score Last Total Jackson 48 D Rodway 48D Venter 36D Grant 48D Dunstan 48E Beresford 36D McCurrie 36D Morse 48D Ensoll 48D Landed out Facts A camel can drink 90 litres (20 gallons) of water in 20 minutes (I know some people who can do that with beer!!!) It takes 4.5 litres ( 1 gallon) of fuel to move the liner Queen Elizabeth 2 15 cm (6inches) An average person loses 312 grams (11 oz) of weight overnight (I don t because I have a midnight snack) 10

OBGGGG waxing lyrical about Vic, Tomboy and proposed scale contest rules CMAC Club nights. The June evening saw Gary give an interesting talk about the designer Vic Smeed and the Tomboy that we all seem to love. There was also a discussion on the proposed new 1/2A Texaco Scale event for next year. Well - maybe sometime this year even seeing that there appear to be at least one nearing completion already and possibly at least a couple more on the building boards. I'd say that the first one finished will have a distinct advantage in getting trimmed out etc for the competition next year. Our July club night will be an interesting one as we have Dave to give us a talk and live demonstration of these printers and what use they can be for us in our hobby. Don't miss out. As usual, 7 for 7:30 PM 5th of July. Mark Work in progress OBGGGG s Problem getting his workshop sorted so he can return to modeling again!!! Never move!! Car only space 12

Proposed rules for a limited fuel Scale competition for 2017 It was a pleasing response to my proposal of Limited Fuel Scale contests for next year. Nev Robinson has already started his build (a 40 year old plan he liked and brought that long ago, but just needed some thing which excites him to build it). To the members present it seemed like (with some changes) releasing their pent up desires to build a (not too challenging) scale model with a contest attached that didn t need the full gambit of scale documentation Just either a photo or 3 view of the full sized aircraft made before I will present a full set of rules next bulletin after discussion with my rules lawyers and those who want to drive complications to what is supposed to be a simple but effective competition. Another member is considering this aircraft (built 1966) for the contest, possibly electric. 14 Weather Station Phone Number Operating times Monday to Friday hrs and hrs Saturday and Sunday hrs Editorial Manure. # 139, many more to come I write this editorial with trepidation What is a club it is a assembly of like minded people coming together in harmony and friendship to enjoy the pursuits of which they are all interested in.. In this coming together there has to be established rules governing everything that makes all our endeavors harmonious and safe, also a committee to ensure that the club is well run and to help provide all the necessary's for us to enjoy our passions. To this end subscriptions are raised to provide all the necessary's to allow everyone to enjoy their hobby. Our club subscription covers affiliation to our national body (NZMAA) who in return supply us with insurance, promotion of our hobby to all, in general looks after the big picture. The club portion of the sub covers the flying field rental (several thousands of dollars) field upkeep (motor mower, electric fencing, ) Club nights hall rental, indoor hall rental, weather station, monthly barbeque, Torque magazine, toilet and much, much more. We are a competitive club I.E. we have competitions and participate in NDC events, we have a published monthly program which allocates times and place these events take place, all looked after by their liaison officers, we also have approved events to which other club members are invited to attend. To cover all our costs we need to have reasonable membership which does seem to be reasonably stable at the moment with people coming and going for various reasons, most of which I can understand except for the rumor that one of our recent resignations has voiced the opinion that he will never again join our club because we are so unfriendly. I find that most incomprehensible I can only presume that he found our rules not to his liking (which have been developed over many years ) I inadvertently seemed to have given the wrong impression to one of our members who resigned from our club when I told him that as he is no longer a member he doesn t have the use of our field for his flying activities. What I should have added was that he is welcome to attend any invitational meetings (such as the Cirrus trophy or any club approved events run for other associations which have gained our club committee approval) and that he is a paid up member of the NZMAA. (it was also suggested that he pay an associated membership which would allow him full club privileges) Club membership entitles any member who has paid the full or associated fees is entitled to full use of our facilities, please read Operating rules for the, other club members are only permitted use of our facilities if there is an formal invitation by our club committee to approved events. Prospective club members should always evaluate that the club caters for all their needs otherwise they should look for another club or join two clubs and pay the subs OBGGGG "One of the nicest characteristics of the average aero-modeler is his sense of humor. Rarely does one meet aero-modelers without this valuable asset." 14
