The prez sez Junior / Junior = under 18 Junior = 18 to 60 Senior = 60 to 80 Senior / Senior = 80+ Club perceived age / knowledge This month has been very busy in terms of RC Flying events, glider tow at CMAC on Sunday afternoon and also the McLeans Island Jet meet and fly in at Darfield The Darfield event had a very good attendance and will possibly be a fixture to compliment and match the Lake Forsyth event in the future. Although we have had some shocking days due to the inclement weather there have also been 1 or 2 good days when the flying has been excellent. At present there are lambs in the fields who don't have a great appreciation for the electric fence, please chase them out through the gate carefully as we do not want a stampede on the electric fence as this can make quite a tangle of the wires. Daylight saving is now with us so that creates opportunities for flying after work if you get a chance, just be aware that the sun is low in the West and can cause a few problems if you do not stay away from it. We have a long weekend coming up - so if you are going away, safe travels, if you are going flying over the weekend, safe flying, or just staying home and relaxing, have a good one. Happy Flying Grahame Hart Notices November club meeting. The usual time of 7:30 pm, Tuesday 7th November. Nothing specific planned - bring along any models for a "show & tell" OBGGGGG is bringing along everything that is going into the rubbish on the 8th November, there will be some things you may want. CLUB SOAR AEROTOW Saturday 2nd December Q: What are steroids? A: Things for keeping carpets still on the stairs. Q: What is the fibula? A: A small lie. Q: Give the meaning of the term 'Caesarean Section' A: The Caesarean Section is a district in Rome. 2

TOMBOY 24TH September Gee aren t we lucky with the contest days we pick and today was no exception, clear blue sky, very light wind to begin with it increasing at altitude as the morning went on. Daylight saving didn t stop the keen ones as I (CD) was the last to get there at 0830hrs for 0900hrs start Ensoll, Beresford, Rodway, Morse must have had their alarm clocks set correctly. Missing in action were Tour D France cyclist Dunstan who sent the following wishing us well Was hoping for rain and wind and postponement for a week but no such luck. Have fun this weekend - home soon. JD We certainly did John!!! The other top dog Stu Grant was in England visiting family (I wonder what goodies he will bring back!!!!) The action is as follows, with 5 flights and a 1130hrs deadline (barbeque starts then), it was reasonably fast UNTIL the wheels fell of for a couple of our stalwart fliers first Granddad E found that he wasn t coping with the stress of a heavy model and wobbly legs so after 2 flights reverted to time keeping for OBGGGGG from the comfort of his chair. The other non finisher was John Beresford who found out that transmitters need connected batteries to control his model, he was up for his fourth flight when at 100 feet the model was not responding to his inputs and on looking at the TX screen there was nothing showing, the Tomboy, due to its pedigree as a free flight model carried on as nothing had happened and landed safely. Of the finishers (5 flights) those who were last at the last contest were not this time. Stew Morse had a better day than recently due more practice and a better motor run (your turn is coming Stew!!!!) The was a tight race for the top spot with OBGGGGG (36 )looking good until the last 2 flights (2 &4 minute) when the motor/pilot didn t perform up to the standard set in the first 3 flights (top time of the day with his 8:45minute flight) That old reliable Lynn Rodway (48 ) edged him out with better 2 &4 minute flights so that s life in the Tomboy camp. Next contest will have the added stress of the refreshed Tour D France Dunstan showing us what we have missed!!!!!! TOMBOY WEATHER 3

Free Flight Report 1 October 2017 A calm morning with just a light southerly blowing meant good conditions for recording 1/2A power times. Bruce Bonner, Bruce Weatherall, Lynn Rodway and Stew Morse all prepared their models in expectation of a good contest. Bruce B was first up and after being plagued with engine problems decided it was not his day and put his model back in the car Bruce W launched downwind and used his model to make a new rabbit hole...definitely not his day either. He had a lot more fun tuning up his new rubber model which flew exceptionally well. Lynn Rodway was his usual reliable self putting in three great flights to be the first to put times in the book. Stew had a warm up flight that went very well. Two more "practices" were!@#$% flights before he managed to get another stable flight that inspired him to try to match Lynn's effort on the scorebook. He should have known better as he instead only improved on Bruce W's effort by powering into the ground and making an even bigger rabbit hole. The outcome of all this was a well deserved win to Lynn over a non existing opposition.!/2a Power Lynn Rodway 74, 120, 120 Total 314 Free Flight Report 1 5 October 2017 Left home early on the back of a reasonable weatherbox report. Got out to the Willows and Murphy had struck again. A cold windy morning there to greet Lynn and myself. The only thing able to fly in the conditions was a giant Bumble Bee that skillfully engaged in a dogfight with Stew and then took on Lynn's lunchbox. As the morning wore on the sun came out and the wind dropped enabling Lynn to have a fly with his electric 36" Tomboy. A flat battery restricted it to one flight. Stew had been content mucking round with his catapult glider but decided to try his 1/2A power model that he had repaired from its previous mishap. Once again a flat battery prevented the motor from starting and it was put away for another day. ( Stew was having similar trouble on the 22 October!!!!! OBGGGGG) After a rough first attempt Stew enjoyed the better conditions to put in a nice flight with his 48" Tomboy before packing up Bruce Bonner was the only other free flighter to turn up and even then he had not brought out any free flight models. He did get in some R/C practice with an old well worn trainer model. 5

THE FUSELAGE ARTICLE CONTINUED- PART TWO Having marked the location of the firewall the next thing of course is to mark and make the firewall- an interesting exercise and not difficult for the average modeller. You will need some ROSIN CORE solder and a suitably sized piece of 8-10mm marine ply for the firewall. The ROSIN CORE solder is used to create a template of the desired shape at the previously marked position of the firewall. The rosin core solder will be a bit floppy but if you measure the height and width of the fuselage you will be able to transfer the shape onto the marine ply- perhaps you try it first and then make a 'dummy' cardboard template and see how accurate you can make it. Used in conjunction with the corrugated cardboard the solder shape can be transferred onto the cardboard for you to do a 'trial' run. Cut out the cardboard and see how accurate you can make it- being aware that the solder shape is of the exterior so you can take about 1mm off that size in order to create an internal shape. What you want is for the cardboard template to be a nice fit inside the fuselage without having to distort the fuselage inwards, or outwards when finally gluing the firewall in place. Once satisfied that your shape is correct then simply transfer the shape onto the ply and cut out the firewall- check the fit and adjust as required...making a firewall is very easy so don't be put off by this description. What I do next is epoxy coat the front face of the plywood firewall- once cured I then, using the DREMEL Jigsaw, 'kerf' the exposed cut of the plywood- putting small cuts at 10mm centres say 1mm deep around the complete perimeter of the firewall. This will be used later to enable a better gluing surface to the internal surface of the fibreglass fuselage. My next move is to open the fuselage for the full extent of the engine- minimum size is better than over-cutting- so you will need to do a few trial runs to ensure that the hole is not too big. An oversize hole is always and indication (to me anyway) of bad workmanship. The next move is to slide the engine, engine mount and firewall into place- yes, they are at this stage separate components. Then bolt the engine to the mount, put a propeller onto the crankshaft of the engine, and preferably install the correct sized spinner...the propeller/spinner combination will lock the unit into place. What is now left to do is to push the plywood firewall hard up against the engine mount- and spot-glue using epoxy or cyano the firewall to the engine mount- this is all very easy, but do check the alignment as you proceed. DO NOT GLUE THE FIREWALL TO THE FUSELAGE AT THIS POINT. Once the epoxy or cyano has cured then undo the engine screws and you should be able to slide the engine mount/firewall rearwards and out through the wing saddle...a job not worth rushing. The next thing is to drill the appropriate holes in the firewall using the engine mount holes as a guide; and install appropriate sized bolts complete with blind nuts- some call them tee nuts. I always ensure that the blind nuts cannot come loose so I tend to epoxy them in place with a large fillet of glue surround each nut. The next thing is to scuff the inside of the fuselage at the location of the firewall, and then clean that area with acetone...this will ensure that any waxes in the polyester/epoxy fuselage are removed. I then position the firewall/engine mount combination back into the fuselage and bolt fix everything to the engine- nothing should have moved so the alignment should be correct. I then-from the wing saddle- dribble in epoxy glue at the firewall/fuselage junction, and with a heat gun apply minimal heat to ensure the epoxy flows completely around the joint and into the 'kerfing'...you will see it happen- let it all cure overnight then carry on building. 6

Indoor Report for 12 th October. By lightweight (5 grams) Bill Long The event we flew was Hanger Rat and was the last event of the year in which we are flying N.D.C. In attendance were Kay, Nev and Bill (that s me). The conditions in the hall were far from ideal with a cool breeze coming from the stage area. During the test flying of our F.1.Ds this has been one of our biggest problems for the last 2 months. The models would come around into this cool current and just stop mid air and settle down on the floor. Nev I would say had the best trimmed model and was flying really well, the problem again was too much weight. A Rat needs to be no more than 6 gram or even maybe 5. Kay was dealing with drift problems but managed one good flight. I managed a 3 min flight and then bombed out. The next meeting will be testing and is to be held on the 12 th of November. Results. Bill. 3 min 1 sec. and 2 min 26 sec. Kay. 2 min 53 sec. and 1 min 54 sec. Nev. 1 min 58 sec. and 1 min 56 sec. Just maybe he was flying a Lead sled 7

Aerotow Sunday 15 October Finally we got some good weather to allow some of our club flyers to use the club strip I must say the strip was beautifully presented thanks to Graham Moffat. Three pilots turned up with Gliders, Peter France Fox, Dave Griffin ASH 31 and my self Ventus 2CX. Scott was on hand to fly my Pawneee and all three of us had several good flights which gave Scott good practice in towing a range of different size gliders. There were no real problems other than me stuffing a landing up fortunately no damage to the Ventus only the Canopy came un clipped. Scotts boys flew their Radian and Tomboys at days end while the rest of us packed up the tow plane and gliders that saw us leaving the field around 4.30 pm to have a beer at the new tavern in West Melton on the way home,a good day was had by all must do it again next month. Paul Chisholm Ryan Chisholm and his Tomboy (sensible lad!!!) Below, left to right, Dave Griffin, Paul Chisholm plus a couple of model boxes (gone are the days you used to go to the flying field with your model box on the back of your bike!!!!!) 8

The work horse and it is not a draught horse, though there is plenty of draught out the back. Hayden and his reliable electric Radian, the guy in the back looks like he has been to the new West Melton Tavern already!!!! What you can t see in this photo is who is the trainer due the electronic wizardry now available. Hayden and Granddad, I think that they are flying different models by where they are looking. One hopes so!!!! 9

CMAC SCALE TEXACO COMPETITION FIRST ATTEMPT It was going to be a borderline call based on the Zeus weather gods predictions but OBGGGGG thought that it would be good to see who turned up with models regardless of the weather and we had 3 starters plus 1 thinking about it with a plan in hand (get on with it Lynn!!). Andrew Palmer and engineer Suetonia were there practicing for the world champs they are heading to next Friday and Andrew said that while there was very little wind at ground level at between 50 and100 feet there was quite a strong northwester. OBGGGGG made the call to postpone the comp to a later date, all those attending thought that it was a good idea. They still got their prize for attendance. Till next time chaps when the weather gods get their ducks in a row. You will be advised in time (gives Lynn enough time to get a model ready!!!!) The first 3 contestants and models and look how happy they are. 10

Sunday 22 October photo pages Early birds Lynn and Stew with no gumboots so very wet feet due the morning dew. The Palmers out for their early morning constitutional with a contra rotating prop friend (it flies beautifully) They are off to the world champs next Friday, we wish them well. A P 11

Yeah Right!!!! In the middle of building the latest master piece!!!! There was a leak from upstairs which required the necessity to move all my stuff around in the workshop this has caused me to really evaluate what I have got ( and couldn t find when I needed it to finish the model, so more unnecessary expense) so the rubbish bin is getting full with old outdated radios, servos, R/X s, motors, magazines, plus finding those items that I could have done with last week!!!!! What is your workshop like????? We welcome 3 new members to the club who, because of their work as surveyors, are required obtain a drone qualification. Hopefully this will lead them onto enjoying more normal modeling. OBGGGGG 1923 Dewoitine D7 Don t mess with me, I have muscles plus hand grenades. OBGGGG s D7 Pilot 13
