2 R&D OBJECTIVE AND RESEARCH PLAN Broad objective To test the concept of energy management in distribution feeders with PV penetration and battery energy storage system which will be met with the help of following tasks planned: Design of an energy management system logic for coordinating supply from the utility (grid simulator), PV, and the loads; Study of peak shaving/ energy shifting application of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) using a sample switching profile for load emulator (load profile) and emulated solar PV generation profile with the help of the microcontroller logic; Study of frequency response application of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) using a sample switching profile for load emulator (load profile) and emulated solar PV generation profile; Use of off-grid/ battery inverter, in-coordination with the grid-tied solar PV inverter, to perform the intentional islanded operation on the emulated network. 2

16 URBAN DISTRIBUTION PILOT: OUTCOME Reduced stress on Distribution Transformers during peak hours; Improved reliability of distribution system while providing uninterrupted power supply to the last-mile consumers; Ensure the fullest usage of solar power during day time, especially during outage hours; Demand-side Management through consumer participation, and energy storage intervention for peak-shaving; Demonstrating DSO capabilities, and optimal usage of energy storage through commercialization (on premium power supply basis) thus reducing the usage of DG-sets, and Safety Protection Schema of distribution network, considering large-scale rooftop Solar PV penetration, and energy storage. Sustainability & Scalability Post-Pilot: Mass-scale roll-out of BESS for downstream applications of distribution network i.e., at DT-level in-order to manage Peak demand, and reduce stress on network assets. 16
17 TOOL FOR SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS IN STORAGE TECHNOLOGY COSTS What it is: Sensitivity analysis allows the user to explore how the model s output in this case, the annualized life cycle costs and LCOS change when key input parameters are changed. Objective Factors Effecting LCOS: To determine the cost of service of different storage technologies. Stakeholders: System Integrators, Project Developers, Academic & Research Institutions, and Utilities. To analyze critical factors impacting LCOS, and how they can be optimized. Capital Investments P/E Ratio Application & Technology Technical: Power Rating, Energy Rating, Roundtrip Efficiency, Cycle Life & C Rates Commercial: Capex, Opex & Price Signals Therefore, key variable identified to develop Cost Trajectory Source: TERI Analysis 17
