Parts & Materials Committee Oct. 31 Nov. 1, 2012, NV
Committee Charter The mission of the CIC Parts & Materials Committee is to identify the issues and challenges related to the parts, materials and technologies utilized in today s vehicles including the effect they have on the collision repair process and to identify and offer solutions where possible. Our members represent numerous industry segments with wide-ranging viewpoints, but are working jointly to improve the overall quality of the repair process for the industry and vehicle owners alike.

AHSS, Weld-Bonding, 2013 Dodge Dart Structure Presented by: Doug Craig Chrysler Service Engineering Collision Repair Manager
Today s Topics: - AHSS usage is increasing, why? - Why Chrysler recommends Weld- Bonding for all welded panel replacements - Overview of 2013 Dodge Dart structure and the importance for future vehicles
Why is AHSS usage increasing so dramatically? - Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) - Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) - Third-Party Crash Testing Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)
CAFE BY New fuel economy 54.5 MPG fleet average Enablers include: Weight reduction! Body-In-White thinner and stronger steel Other areas steel to aluminum Improved overall efficiency in all systems New technology Aero Tires BUT, there is more content too
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards - Federal Regulations are numerous but several are key in this discussion Side Pole test 20-MPH into a 10-inch pole in middle of driver s door Roof Crush testing 3 X GVW at top of windshield pillar for vehicles 6000# or less 1.5 X GVW 6000# to 10000#
Third-Party Testing The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or IIHS, is really who we are talking about 40-MPH frontal with 40% overlap has been the attention getter moderate overlap 40-MPH frontal with 25% overlap is the new test small overlap Also roof crush 4 X GVW note higher than FMVSS Low-speed bumper damageability testing Overlap Roof
To wrap all of this up, we need: - Reduced overall mass and increased strength - AHSS usage increasing and new grades coming - Many other efficiency improvements But, all these changes affect repairability! Most of these AHSS materials are not repairable when damaged Materials are increasingly sensitive to heat No heat to straighten Welding processes change
New Metal Announced GM announced venture with Nano Steel to create new material in 1500 Mpa range
Chrysler Collision Repair Bulletin: Weld-Bonding for all repairs Previously, weld-bonding, or resistance spot welding replacement panels including the addition of an approved structural adhesive, was an acceptable method of repair. With the release of this new bulletin Chrysler is stating that Weld-Bonding is now the appropriate method of attachment to use, for all factory spot-welded panels. MIG-welding should only be utilized where the same was part of the original body build, or where body construction prohibits access for the welder.
Chrysler Collision Repair Bulletin: Weld-Bonding for all repairs Not having the appropriate welding equipment is not a reason for not weldbonding all the replacement panels!
Body, Materials, and Design Awareness 2013 Dodge Dart
2013 Dodge Dart 66% of Body Materials designed for strength & light weight - 15% better than 2010 industry average 2013 Dodge Dart with Closures & Bumpers 2010 North American Unibody Architecture with Closures & Bumpers 1 32% 8% 4% 4% 30% 51% 16% 24% 49% 66% 30% Mild Steel HSS AHSS Hot Stamp Aluminum Other 35% Mild Steel HSS AHSS 1 America Iron and Steel Institute SMDI Light Vehicle Steel Content, Drucker Worldwide, March 2011

2013 Dodge Dart Mild Steel ( LS ) High Strength Steel ( HS ) Advanced High Strength Steel ( VHS ) Press Hardened Steel ( VHS ) Aluminum Plastic
2013 Dodge Dart Upperbody Load Paths hot-stamped boron steel is primarily used around the door ring for roof strength, side impact, and frontal offset impact energy management Boron steel AHSS HSS Mild Steel
2013 Dodge Dart Laser-Brazed Roof
Summary Dramatically increasing AHSS usage Reduced repairability when damaged Welding requires current technology equipment OEM body construction information and repair guidelines must be followed Future vehicles from similar platform

Current Situation Areas in red represent nonattainment and are the focus of emissions reductions
Current Situation Most of California, all of Canada and Delaware require WB Maryland starts July 2013 There are thousands of WB users in the U.S. The vast majority of new installs are in non-regulated areas
What Will I Need to Convert to Water?
What Will I Need to Convert to Water? How up-to-date is your equipment? Compressed Air Booth Booth Heater Shop Cleanliness Maintenance Practices Tools & Equipment Safety Waste Stream (understand local regulations) Things that are marginal now may be inadequate for Water
