12 CIGRÉ and GIS 1 st Generation Key messages of the CIGRÉ-Brochure 499 (June 2012) according irregularities at GIS in long-time operation SF 6 -leakages (mainly outdoor) Special construction- and material issues Corrosion Mechanical wear (mainly drives) Our GIS-installations of 1st generation are showing a very small sensitivity according this mentioned general observations. Generally very positive experiences are gained. Electrical wear (mainly contact system) Page 12

O-Rings do have an important role up to date no failures during operation Actual report/investigation regarding life expectation of O-Rings CIGRÉ Session B in Paris Report 1) at by Soichi Moriguchi (Japan CHUBU Electric Power Utility) The result of the examplary investigation of 69 O-Rings 2) (Ø 10mm) of GIS after 32 years operation in outdoor application was, those O-Rings have a life expectation up to 51 years. Life expectation even higher for O-Rings at indoor GIS. 1) Asset Management for Aged primary equipment 2) Design, material and stress are comparable with O-Rings our GIS of 1st generation Page 13

18 Summary At GIS of 1st generation no end of life is visible Long service-life is supported by Indoor application (no corrosion) Conventional grid station (less switching operations stable S/S) Performance of OEM-recommended maintenance does support long service life According to the title of this lecture: Retirement in the age of 67 years seems to be possible.
