4 VFS VARIABLE FREQUENCY STARTER Characteristic of VFS VFS (Variable Frequency Starter) adopts the patent of RXPE, which realize the step frequency conversion and stepless voltage regulation through the control to the thyrister. It can output 12.5 Hz, 25Hz and 50Hz frequencies, and through controlling the voltage/ frequency ratio to realize small starting current and big starting torque characteristics. At the same time, it can realize voltage slope starting, constant current starting, soft stop, brake stop and other start/stop controlling method. This technology is newly developed, and become one of the best motor starting technologies in the world. With small Starting current and big starting torque; through adopting the frequency conversion function, the starting current could be controlled within acceptable current with the starting effort of 80-90% the rated torque. A more flexible starting mode; we could select different starting frequency combination according to the on-spot loading and grid condition, and realize voltage slope starting and current limit starting under different starting frequencies. A more available motor starting control: could realize starting both of forward and reverse directions, with free stop, soft stop and brake stop and other stop methods optional.

5 VARIABLE FREQUENCY STARTER Characteristic of VFS With adjustable Starting time and starting torque; starting time and torque could be adjusted according to the on-spot requirement. With full motor protection Adopting digital control mode, with MODBUS, PROFIBUS and RS 485 communication interface VFS series productions are innovative standard products, which makes driving system more flexible and less-cost. VFS series productions are high performance digital driving device, which is designed for both standard three phase asynchronous motor and three phase synchronous motor. It could offer a smooth acceleration. VFS series productions could be applied to the international main standard voltage 2.3kV, 3.3kV, 4.16kV, 6kV, 6.6kV 10kV, 11kV and 13.8kV. The standard VFS series productions could be applied to start: 160kW kW motor. VFS are high quality series productions; the whole process of design, production and delivery are strictly abided by the DINISO9001 standard. 8 VFS VARIABLE FREQUENCY STARTER VFS principle of work Two step VFS: through the control of the thyrister s firing angle to control the output voltage and output frequency, thus the output frequency could be 12.5Hz or 50Hz. via change the motor voltage/ frequency ratio, to obtain the starting current and starting torque an optimum adjustment. Besides, VFS offers a soft stop function. It simulates the motor starting process, and the working voltage will smoothly reduce. In this way, it could avoid the driving sudden stop which will benefit the water pump driving( avoiding the water hammer effect) or the conveyor belt. VFS offers step stop function. Three step VFS the frequency changes: 50Hz 25Hz 12.5Hz (two step VFS frequency changes only 50 Hz 12.5Hz). The motor voltage accordingly reduced, with a good brake character, and realize fleetly stop.

Then the motor smoothly start and accelerate to the rated speed. Initial start torque To determine the initial starting torque of the motor (the torque is proportional to the square of the voltage). Setting range: 10-50%Vr. (could be expanded to 80%Vr.) This adjustment also determines the surge current and the mechanical shock. If the setting is too high, it will cause a high initial mechanical shock and high surge current( even if the current limit is very low, the initial voltage setting override the current limit setting) If the setting is too low, it will leads to a long starting time. Normally, the setting should assure the motor to operate immediately after the start signal.

If the setting is too high, that will causes greater current drawn from the busbar and faster acceleration. While if too low may prevent the motor from completing the starting process and reaching the full speed. Current limit is not operating during Run and soft stop. Acceleration time To determine the motor voltage ramp-up time from initial to full voltage. Setting range 1-30 sec. (could be expand to90 sec.) It is recommended to set acceleration time to the minimum acceptable value (about 5sec) Note : Since current limit overides acceleration time, when current limit is set low, starting time will be longer than the preset acceleration time. If motor reach full speed before voltage reach nominal voltage, acceleration time setting is overridden and cause the voltage to ramp-up quickly to nominal.

Determines the ramp-down time of motor voltage Setting range: 1-30 sec. (could be expanded to 90 sec.) Pump control- start curves Asynchronous motor produces peak torque of up to 3 times the rated torque during the starting process. In some pump applications, this peak may cause high pressure in the pipe. Though the standard soft starter could obviously reduce the starting torque, but the peak torque will remains high leading to a higher starting torque and a rapid start. So, the peak torque and starting torque should be reduced and prolong the starting time. VFS offers 4 different starting curves,to reduce the peak torque and prolong the starting time: Start Curve 0 Standard curve (default). The most stable and suitable curve for the motor that prevents prolonged starting and motor overheating. Start Curves 1, 2, 3 During acceleration, before reaching peak torque, the pump control program automatically controls the voltage ramp -up to reduce peak torque. Always starts with start curve 0. At the end of acceleration, if the peak torque is too high(the pressure is too high), proceed to curve 1 then 2 or 3.
