2 Goals Understanding impacts of PHEVs/BEVs on utility distribution system under variety of circumstances; Helping utility companies improve power grid reliability, security and safety. Framing the problem in temporal and spatial (dynamic) terms 2

3 TASKS Investigate the potential impacts of PHEVs/BEVs on utility distribution system in different areas: Assets management; Demand side management; Outage management, etc. Investigate various implementation options and study feasibility scenarios that impact power grid depending on: Adoption rates of electric vehicles; Charging methods and time-of-charge; Driver s charging inclination, etc. Studying impacts of charging vehicles from renewable energy source: Wind power; Solar power, etc. 3

4 Technical Details Asset Management G2V V2B Demand Side Management G2V V2B Outage Management G2V V2B Development of various implementation options and feasible EV scenarios depending on adoption rates of electric vehicles, timeof-charge, driver s inclination, etc. Actual Driving Cycles SoC Simulation EV Charging Scenarios Effect of possible EV penetration on the existing distribution transformer lifespan is demonstrated. The modeling and simulation under different scenarios are developed. Utilization of the energy stored in the battery of EVs to support the local load during severe system loading and managing the charging of the connected EVs during the low load valley of the day is demonstrated. The impact of PHEVs/BEVs charging/ discharging on outage management in distribution systems is investigated. 4

5 Results: Asset Management The impact of EVs in V2B operation mode on the distribution transformer in the residential level is investigated by simulating the effected transformer thermal factors. 7 Results: Outage Management The restoration strategy by optimally scheduling PHEV/BEVs under outage condition where the normal utility generations are disconnected is investigated. In our case studies, the entire load in the blackout area can be covered by the stored energy in the PHEV/BEV battery, thus guarantees the minimal interruption of the power service to the customers. 9 Tasks A survey on intra-network communications and communication with consumers of various EVSE from different vendors; Functional specification of a communication center that Integrates EVSE provided by different vendors; Study the EVSE s communication configuration options and applications realized in practice 9
