21 What s a Kilowatt (kw) and a Kilowatt Hour (kwh)? Kilowatt (kw) is a unit of capacity. It s the unit that describes the maximum output of a solar array. A 5 kw solar array can produce a maximum of 5 kw of power at any given instant, under optimum conditions. A Kilowatt Hour (kwh) is a unit of energy. Energy is power multiplied by time. A 5 kw solar array could produce 5 kwh of energy under optimum conditions for a full hour. Every home s system size is different.
