Interview with Dr. Tarek Makansi, Founder & CTO of Tempronics 1. Now that Tempronics is ready to engage Tier 1s and OEMs, what can you tell us about your company? Tempronics is a very exciting company. Our products provide superior driving comfort, reduce the HVAC energy by 36% to 43%, and extend the life of Lithium Ion batteries by many years. Our company is focused squarely in vehicle electrification. We are venture-backed with the long-term investor commitment needed to be successful in the automotive industry. We offer two solid-state heating and cooling (thermoelectric) product lines. The first is a ClimateRibbon tm for car seats that provides unprecedented heating/cooling response time and performance. The second product line is an ultra-thin heating and cooling AnySize tm module for batteries that provides thermal management. Tempronics is headquartered in Tucson AZ, has a presence in the Silicon Valley and New York, and is building a presence in the Detroit metro area. 2. What improvements in thermoelectric heating and cooling is your company bringing to the marketplace? Our ClimateRibbon tm provides heating and cooling in the seats, keeping the driver and passengers comfortable while reducing the capacity and energy required of the central HVAC system. In EVs and hybrids, the HVAC system often requires as much energy as moving the vehicle. The US Department of Energy has tested our product in a Ford Focus EV and a Chevy Volt, and the HVAC energy savings was 36% to 43.5%. The test reports are publicly available. Our products are much more efficient and effective than standard thermoelectric, or Peltier, modules resulting from our patented Peltier Distribution System. The science behind our unprecedented efficiency and effectiveness has three components: (1) conducting heat in/out of a person or battery instead of relying on forced air or other fluids, (2) distribution of the thermoelectric chips to minimize heat backflow losses (concentration of heat drives up the temperature delta), and (3) removing heat directly from a warm surface, reducing the delta temperature across the thermoelectric devices even further. More information is available by contacting the company. These improvements in thermoelectric efficiency and effectiveness also apply to battery thermal management. 3. What key milestones has Tempronics reached? Tier 1s and OEMs are currently integrating both of the ClimateRibbon tm and AnySize tm products. We have passed numerous industry-standard tests for durability, chemical spillage, performance, and function. Human subject testing of our climate seat has included body sizes from 5 th to 95 th percentiles, qualitative perceptions, and quantitative (surface temperature) measurements. Test results are available for our climate seat and for the competition s actively cooled, ventilated, and
resistive heated seats. These independent tests were conducted in environmental chambers to simulate extremes of vehicle temperatures. 4. Describe the Tempronics manufacturing process. That is an easy question. Except for some final assembly and trimming, our manufacturing process steps and automation equipment are from the surface mount technology (SMT) industry used to make circuit boards and wiring harnesses for the automotive industry. 5. What is the partnership strategy and how important is it to the company s long-term success? We know that the right relationships and participation of the parties involved are critical to our success. We already have some and are forming additional partnerships with the OEMs, Tier 1 seat and thermal management suppliers, and battery pack manufacturers. We also have developed multiple relationships within each OEM, as our value proposition spans the seat, the occupant comfort, the user interface, the HVAC system, and the environmental regulations. For the battery thermal manager, our module interacts with the battery, the battery pack, the radiator, and the electrical system, and we are developing relationships within the OEMs in these areas too. 6. Discuss the addressable markets. The addressable markets in automotive for the seat ClimateRibbon tm is luxury cars for comfort, electric vehicles for comfort and range, and hybrid vehicles for comfort and MPG. Beyond automotive, our ribbon can be used in office chairs, beds, and sofas for comfort, and in nursing beds and wheelchairs for bedsore prevention. The addressable market in automotive for the AnySize tm Module is battery thermal management for hybrid cars, beverage console coolers, and third-row zoned HVAC vents decoupled from the refrigeration loop. Beyond automotive, our AnySize tm Module can be used for medical fluid transport, restaurant buffet trays, plant soil temperature control, and many other applications. 7. What differentiates Tempronics from other offerings in the marketplace? Our seat ClimateRibbon tm is 2X to 3X faster in the following measures: time to sensation, time to neutral, time to cool, and time to warm vs. competitive solutions in environmental chamber testing. Our climate seat also draws 2X to 3X less power from the battery while beating competition in these comfort measures, all at a comparable cost for inclusion in the car. Our solution does not need perforated holes in the leather, which our competition requires to move cool air to the occupant. Ironically, the occupant blocks these holes when seated. Furthermore, the holes in the leather are costly and diminish the visual appeal of the seats. Our conduction-based solution moves heat directly into or out of the person seated. Regarding our seat climate solution, OEMs tell us we want this in every seat in every car, and this is the best line item for emissions reduction we have on the list. Tier 1 s tell us wow, a seat climate system that improves comfort while greatly reducing vehicle energy consumption. Dealers tell us finally, a seat cooling feature that we can feel good about selling.
Our battery thermal management module is more efficient and is a cleaner and simpler solution for mild, moderate, and strong hybrids as compared to chilled water loops and standard thermoelectric modules. OEMs love that our AnySize tm module can match the size of the surface to be heated and cooled, providing uniformity. Our module is also compressible and compliant for thermal contact, fitment, and vibration tolerance in the engine compartment. 8. The electric vehicle (EV) market is becoming mainstream as most (if not all) automakers have introduced electrification platforms. However, the performance of the battery and its associated high cost is still widely viewed as a major hurdle to mass market adoption. How can Tempronics help address these issues? We help in the following ways: (1) we reduce the HVAC energy needs by 36% to 43% which greatly reduces the size and cost of the battery needed for the car, (2) we provide temperature stability for the battery, increasing its cold start capacity, increasing the battery s life, and removing the need for oversizing the battery. 9. How do you envision the Tempronics model evolving over the next 3 years? We like the model we have now. We are the Intel Inside for conductive thermoelectric components in automotive and other applications, supplying the parts needed for others to integrate and differentiate their brands. 10. Any closing comments. We at Tempronics are ready to engage in further commercialization of these products. Thank you for the opportunity to speak with you today. Our web site is
Executive Director s Notes NAATBATT TO PURSUE PRE-COMPETITIVE RESEARCH NAATBatt International President Davion Hill and I recently had a long talk about what we can do to make NAATBatt more relevant and more valuable to its members. One of the ideas we discussed was the possibility of having NAATBatt organize and administer a pre-competitive research fund for the benefit of its members. The concept is that interested members would make a capital contribution to the fund in exchange for a seat on its steering committee. NAATBatt would seek to match the member contributions with federal and state grant moneys. Davion and I are very confident that a neutral, industry-led research fund working on pre-competitive issues important to the advanced battery industry would be virtual magnet for government support. There is, of course, plenty of precedent for industry organizations organizing research funds and doing pretty much exactly what Davion and I envision. USABC, EPRI and ALABC all sponsor member-funded, pre-competitive research programs and in many cases successfully leverage those funds with government grants. NAATBatt would do well to learn from the experience of these other industry programs. It must also avoid duplicating their efforts. There are many areas where NAATBatt members share pre-competitive business interests that are not already the subject of other organizations research efforts. Three such areas, which seem to cry out for attention, are the safe transportation of advanced batteries, the safe containment and fire-suppression of advanced batteries once installed in stationary ESS system, and the cost-effective recycling of advanced batteries at the end of their useful lives. The non-resolution of each of these issues imposes a uniform cost on all companies operating in the advanced battery business. A uniform effort to address these issues is fully warranted. NAATBatt International plans to host a general meeting later this year of companies that might be interested in participating in a fund and shaping its structure and direction. This will be a great opportunity to make meaningful progress on some of the issues that promise to limit the upside potential of the entire industry. Please keep an eye out for future announcements and give serious consideration to participating.

The Summit is the culmination of an industry-wide survey and solicitation for
new technologies. NAATBatt members have the exclusive opportunity to participate in the selection process and get a first look at these new technologies. NAATBatt members have access to ABC PatentEdge, a database of patents and patent applications covering advanced batteries and ultracapacitors developed by NAATBatt in cooperation with the research firm IP Overviews. The database, and the quarterly reports summarizing developments in the database, provide NAATBatt members with deep insight into where advanced battery and capacitor technology is going and where the major players in that market are really making their R&D bets. NAATBatt, as the only international trade association focused on advanced electrochemical energy storage, is a frequent resource for companies looking for products or services involving advanced battery technology. NAATBatt routinely receives inquiries for products and services, which NAATBatt forwards, exclusively, to NAATBatt member firms. For example, NAATBatt recently received and transmitted to its members a solicitation for batteries from a California municipality looking to electrify its bus fleet. This inquiry was transmitted to NAATBatt members well before non-naatbatt members learned of the opportunity. If you think that NAATBatt membership costs money, think about what not being a member costs. NAATBatt is the pre-eminent networking organization for professionals and companies working in the advanced battery industry. NAATBatt believes that good business relationships are founded on good personal relationships. From our members-only networking dinners, to our Advanced Battery Golf and Tennis tournament, to our annual meetings held at four and five-star resorts, we are dedicated to ensuring the development of strong personal and social relationships among professionals working in the industry. NAATBatt membership is meant to be fun, but it is fun with a serious purpose: Helping our members build bigger and more profitable businesses. NAATBatt is a not-for-profit trade association qualified under Section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code and works for the benefit of the entire advanced battery and ultracapacitor industry. Every dollar spent on NAATBatt memberships and programs goes to recouping program costs and to supporting activities intended to benefit the entire advanced battery industry. At a time when it seems that the only people making money on lithium-ion technology are professional conference organizers, the advanced battery industry needs to take control of its own market and its own future. Electrochemical energy storage is the most important technology challenge of our time. Solving the problem of how to store more electricity in a smaller mass is fundamental to progress in vehicle technology, the Smart Grid, robotics, consumer electronics, unmanned aviation, fuel efficient maritime systems, electricity-based weapons systems, medical devices, monitoring systems and many of the other technologies that will shape human society in the 21st Century. Join us in our mission. We are helping to store the energy that will power the world.
