3 William Cook is a large UK-based, family owned, engineering company. It started as a steel casting manufacturer and steel castings still form the basis of many of William Cook s products. But William Cook has advanced far beyond the classic low-tech metal basher. The bulk of William Cook s products now are sophisticated components, assemblies and systems for a huge range of applications. William Cook prefers to design and manufacture its products in-house. This retains control, and reduces reliance on sub-contractors. To assist this, William Cook has substantial design and R&D resources to support its factories, which themselves include large and modern machine shops and testing establishments. 9 CASE STUDY: SERIES 3 BOGIE FRAME William Cook Rail designed the Series 3 Bogie Frame in co-operation with Bombardier Transportation. Each section is cast and machined in-house before fabrication. To date, 5,500 units have been installed on Electrostar and Turbostar trains, mainly for operators in the UK and South Africa. CASE STUDY: OTTAWA William Cook Rail manufactures structural parts for bogies on Alstom s range of Citadis Spirit light rail vehicles for Ottawa, Canada. These are among the most complex and highly specified cast steel components in the world and are being precision engineered at William Cook s new 15m rail plant in Leeds, England. The Citadis Spirit vehicles are designed for high capacity commuter services. William Cook Rail is supplying in excess of 100train sets and additional orders are expected to cover further trainsets.

11 Before refurbishment CASE STUDY: JUBILEE LINE WEDGELOCK COUPLER OVERHAUL Between March 2012 and April 2014 William Cook Rail overhauled 252 wedgelock couplers, 315 bar couplers and 882 drawgears for London Underground Jubilee Line trains at a rate of four couplers per week. After refurbishment CASE STUDY: CENTRAL LINE NEW WEDGELOCK COUPLER William Cook Rail was asked by LUL to manufacture, build and test 8 brand new wedgelock couplers for London Underground Central Line trains in less than 12 weeks.

12 CASE STUDY: NEW TUBE FOR LONDON (NTFL) WEDGELOCK COUPLER In response to requests from several large European train builders, William Cook Rail has designed and manufactured a light weight wedgelock coupler for the forthcoming NTFL and JNAT projects. CASE STUDY: COMBINATION COUPLER William Cook Rail designed and manufactured an innovative coupler system which is compatible with both screw and buckeye couplers. Over 1000 sets have been supplied since its introduction and it remains a core item in the William Cook Rail coupler portfolio.

13 CASE STUDY: TIGHTLOCK COUPLER William Cook Rail manufactures and overhauls tightlock couplers for both passenger and freight trains, locomotives otives or rolling stock. This proven and robust system is supplied with of pneumatic operating system adapted to suit the customers precise needs. A Swan Neck variant is available to accommodate couplers of different heights.

24 INDUSTRY RECOGNITION Component: Application: Metal: Process: Valve Cage. Controlling fluid flow in a control valve. Cobalt based alloy. Investment casting using a PMMA printed pattern. 1 The component was modelled extensively and pattern printed in PMMA. The pattern was sealed in wax before investing and the PMMA removed prior to casting. The cast weight was 200kg with a finished weight of 80kg and with an as-cast surface condition. 1. 27 HISTORY 1 Andrew Cook s motto is Perseverantia Obstinatioque which, translated from the Latin, means persistence and determination. This is carried on his personal coat of arms which, as a Commander of the British Empire, he is entitled to have. This same motto encapsulates the ethos of the William Cook group William Cook senior ( ), the founder of the Company, shown with his father William (1786?) and son, William Cook junior ( ). 2. 28 Originally from a family of Nottinghamshire farmers, William Cook, the great great grandfather of the present Chairman Sir Andrew Cook, walked to Scotland and set up a saw factory in Glasgow in It survived a bank failure and in 1883 a small factory was started in Washford Road, Sheffield, making crucible steel castings for collieries. The Glasgow works was handed over to relatives by marriage in the early 20th century and from 1902 William Cook s two grandsons concentrated their attentions on the Washford Road works. Crucible melting in clay pots over coke fires continued until after World War Two. In 1950 the first electric furnace was installed and in 1956 the Company, although still very small, floated on the London Stock Exchange. During the next ten years the Company outgrew its old premises in the Don Valley and between 1968 and 1974 a new works was built on an elevated, more out-of-town, site. This works grew considerably over the following 30 years and today it is one of the group s three main plants. Sir Andrew Cook, the present Chairman, took control of the Company in 1981 and began a period of rapid expansion and refocusing on new markets. By 1986 sales exceeded 10 million and, following a series of acquisitions over the next five years, by 1991 they had grown to 120 million. During this period, many famous names in the steel casting industry were taken over by William Cook, including Weir Foundries, George Blair, Lake and Elliott and Lloyds Burton. However, the Company s stock market listing had become its Achilles heel and in 1996 a hostile takeover bid from a Midlands industrial group threatened the independence and very existence of the Company. After a long battle the bid was finally defeated by Andrew Cook, who took the Company private with venture capital assistance. In 2002, Andrew Cook began to shrink the group to a more manageable size which would be less vulnerable to market vagaries and over-extended management and in 2004 he bought out the venture capital shareholders. After nearly 50 years, William Cook was again back in family ownership. Since 2006 the group has been debt-free and cash rich, with its activities concentrated on its three main plants in Sheffield, Leeds and County Durham and its market focus on high specification, high-value added components and assemblies where engineering innovation, quality control and efficient, professional manufacturing are more important than mere price Advertisement from around 1900
