6 P H Y S I C A L A N D C H E M I C A L C H A R A C T E R I S T I C S Therminol 59 fluid is designed for use in nonpressurized and moderately low-pressure, indirect heating systems. The recommended maximum bulk and film temperatures for Therminol 59 are based on detailed thermal studies. While Therminol 59 has a relatively high normal boiling point (553 F/289 C), the recommended maximum bulk (600 F/315 C) and film (650 F/ 345 C) temperatures are higher. Proper care in the design of the system, therefore, should be taken to minimize leakage especially when operating above a bulk fluid temperature of 550 F. Monsanto recommends that connections in the piping system be welded or, where access is necessary, raised flanges (ANSI B16.5, Class 300) fitted with gaskets that are of the spiral-wound type conforming to API standard 601 be used. Threaded joints are not recommended and should be avoided due to their tendency to leak. If avoidance is not possible, a suitable high- temperature thread sealant, such as flexible graphite tape or nickel-based anti-seize compound, should be used to help provide the best possible seal. Systems utilizing Therminol 59 fluid should be blanketed with an inert atmosphere. Inert gas blanketing minimizes fluid oxidation and helps maximize fluid life. When Therminol 59 is used above its normal boiling point, the expansion tank should be capable of operating at a pressure of at least one atmosphere of inert gas. Moderate pressure at high operating temperatures suppresses localized boiling and provides adequate suction to the pump, avoiding potential pump cavitation problems. This practice helps provide smooth, troublefree system operation when using Therminol 59 near the recommended maximum temperature. A system pressure-relief device also should be provided. Therminol 59 is non-corrosive to metal commonly used in the design of heat transfer systems. As with all organic heat transfer fluids, when the system is located primarily indoors, good ventilation should be provided. The use of local mechanical exhaust ventilation at known leak sources or when maintenance procedures are occurring is also suggested. When good design and operational practices are used, Therminol 59 provides safe, long-term performance. While Therminol 59 has a relatively high flash point, it is not classified as a fire-resistant heat transfer fluid. 59 Consequently, the use of protective devices may be required to minimize fire risk. The insurer of your property should be consulted relative to this matter. Actual fluid life is quite dependent on the total system design and operation. As fluid ages, the formation of volatile (low-boiling) products and high-boiling compounds may result. Volatile products should be vented from the system to a non-hazardous area away from personnel and sources of ignition. The high-boiling compounds are generally soluble in the fluid. Significant overheating or fluid contamination will accelerate this decomposition and may result in separation of the high-boiling compounds as solids (tar, coke, etc.). These solids could be detrimental to the operation of the system and, when detected, should be removed.

Under no circumstances should this product contact or in any way contaminate food, animal feed, food products, food packaging materials, food chemicals, pharmaceuticals or any items which may directly or indirectly be ultimately ingested by humans. Any contact may contaminate these items to the extent that their destruction may be required. Precautions against ignitions and fires should be taken with this product.
