3 MOTOR OILS CLASSIFICATION The API Motor Oils Classification was developed by the API (American Petroleum Institute) jointly with the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers). It sets forth the boundaries of different parameters (e.g., piston cleanness, piston ring gumming, etc) by conducting testing in the engines of trucks and various machines. API CLASSIFICATION Motor oils for diesel engines CC, CD, CE, CF, CG, CH, CI and CJ CJ-4 CI-4 CH-4 CG-4 CF-2 CF CF-4 Complies with some post 2007 requirements to using diesel engines (mostly, the US) with minimum emissions. This class of oils is meant for the engines using ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) fuel and fitted with a novel exhaust gases purification system. The new class was introduced in 2002 for the limited emission engines compliant with the 2004 exhausts toxicity requirements. Specifically meant for the engines where the exhausts are purified by recirculation and catalytic reduction. Compliant with the standard imposed in 1998, this is a class of oils for diesel engines of heavy vehicles developed for using no-sulfur fuel or fuel with a sulfur content of up to 0.5 %. The class was introduced in 1995 for the oils intended for high capacity US diesel engines, using fuel with a sulfur content of up to 0.5 %. This class of oils mostly overlaps with the previous CF-4 class, but the oils in this class are meant for two-stroke diesel engines. The class of oils was introduced in 1994 for diesel engines with an antechamber used in passenger vehicles. An improved class of oils replacing the CE class, introduced in The classes mentioned below are currently considered outdated CE, CB, CC, CD Belong to an outdated classification used for earlier manufactured models. Motor oils for gasoline engines SC, SD, SE, SF, SG, SH, SJ, SL, SM and SN SN SM New class introduced in The main difference from the SM class is a limited phosphorus content for compatibility with the modern exhausts neutralization systems, and comprehensive power saving and reduced wear. New class introduced in Compared to the SL class, the oils in this class allow a more efficient lowering of the engine noise, perform more efficiently in low temperatures and better resist the oxidation process. SL SJ SH SG SF SC, SD, SE The class was introduced in It takes into account three main requirements: increasing fuel economies, higher requirements to protecting elements of systems reducing hazardous emissions, and enhancing the oil service period. The testing requirements have been made more stringent, compared to the level of SJ. This class appeared in Developed in accordance with stricter requirements to hazardous atmospheric emissions. 4 MOTOR OILS CLASSIFICATION The ACEA is a united organization of European car manufacturers that has developed a motor oils classification taking into account the peculiarities of present-day European vehicles. The ACEA classification breaks motor oils into categories based on the engine type: oils for gasoline engines (A), oils for low-capacity diesel engines (B), oils for vehicles with exhaust gases recovery catalysts (C) and oils for high-capacity diesel engines (E). In 2004, class A and class B oils were brought together under the same class A/B. ACEA CLASSIFICATION Motor oils for heavy duty diesel engines The oils ensuring clean pistons, reducing the deposit of soot, reducing wear and ensuring stability of greasing properties. Recommended for use in high-speed diesel engines meeting Euro-1, Euro-2, Euro-3, Euro-4, Euro-5 and Euro-6 toxic emissions requirements and operating in extreme service conditions, e.g., with significantly longer oil change intervals as recommended by the car manufacturer. Е4 Е6 Е7 Е9 The oils may be used in engines without particulate filters, and for some engines equipped with the exhaust gases recirculation system (EGR) and the system of catalytic recovery of exhaust gases (SCR). Meant for ultra-long oil change intervals. The oils may be used in engines equipped with the exhaust gases recirculation system (EGR) with/without particulate filters, and for engines equipped with a system of catalytic recovery of exhaust gases (SCR). Recommended for operation in combination with low-sulfur diesel fuel and with extended oil change intervals. The oils may be used in engines without particulate filters, and for some engines equipped with the exhaust gases recirculation system (EGR) and the system of catalytic recovery of exhaust gases (SCR). Meant for standard oil change intervals. The oils are to be used in diesel particulate filter engines (DPF) and for most engines equipped with an exhaust gases recirculation system (EGR) and a system of catalytic recovery of exhaust gases (SCR). Recommended for operation in combination with low-sulfur diesel fuel (ULSD). Meant for standard or extended oil change intervals as per the requirements of car manufacturers.
