12 Which Sprayer to Use? Solution The Super Sprayer MAXI offers the refinish industry, automotive repair and detail, marine, aviation and indus- trial sectors a tool that will perform well with chemicals where standard compression sprayers will fail. VITON is compatible with a wide range of chemicals, including oils, fuels, lubricants, solvents, aqueous media and most mineral acids. The range of chemicals to which Viton is resistant is so broad that it is by far easier to list those few with which it is not compatible. It is not recommended for use with methyl ethyl ketones, amines, and esters such as ethyl acetate... EPDM Ethylenepropylene rubber is an elastomer prepared from ethylene and propylene monomers. EPM is a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, while EPDM contains a small amount of a third monomer (a diene) to aid in the curing process. EP is recommended for: phosphate ester based hydraulic fluids, steam to 400 F (204 C), water, silicone oils and greases, dilute acids, dilute alkalis, ketones, alcohols, and automotive brake fluids. It is not recommended for: petroleum oils, and diester based lubricants. To further this concern, it appears that when some chemicals are blended they produce reactive agents, and sealing materials tend to fail over time. Chemicals and sprayers that were compatible in the past are now breaking down due to changes in formulas. Plastic components also degrade when exposed to products like mineral spirits, paint thinners, toluene and acetone to name a few. CHART - Auto Parts Waterborne & Solvent Low VOC Products The number of practical and cost effective VOC-exempt solvents is very limited. Exempt solvents used in coatings and cleaners in the U.S. include Acetone, Methyl Acetate, TBAC, and PCBTF.
