When the acid collide with the overbased detergent the neutralization starts. Once neutralized the surfactants keep the products afloat in the oil. 20 Cylinder Oil Detergents are also slightly basic. Hence, it is not possible to deplete cylinder oils to zero BN without degrading the performance of the oil. A certain BN safe margin has to be kept, in order to keep the reversed micelles with CaSO 4 stable and transported to the drain. 22 Drain Oil Evaluation Two ways to obtain drain oil results Important values Fe (Iron) Total Fe = Fe magnetic + Fe corrosive Wear metal, difference in magnetic and corrosive can be used to evaluate if the wear is abrasive (Cat. Fines) or corrosive (Cold Corrosion BN (Base Number) Alkalinity of the cylinder oil, can be used to indicate if the cyl. Oil is greatly degraded by acid (low BN), and can be used I relation to the Fe (high Fe & low BN indicate Cold corrosion)(high Fe and high BN indicate abrasive wear) Cu (Copper) Elevated level of Cu may indicate that the piston rings still have Alu coating and are running in, or indicate that the stuffing box have high wear. P (Phosphorus) & Zn (Zinc) Typically used in system additives against high pressure interaction in the cylinder oil, increased levels of P or Zn in the drain oil indicate high amounts of system oil pollution, and poor performance of the stuffing box (Dilution of the drain oil with system oil, cause the Fe and BN to become lower) MAN Diesel & Turbo Jesper Mark Pedersen Technical seminar Athens < 22 >

24 Drain Oil Evaluation Onboard Onboard Iron (Fe) testing is typically an measurement of magnetic iron. Magnetic iron is derived from abrasive and adhesive wear. Corrosive wear does not produce magnetic iron and is not measured. XRF, Dotfast and CMT s FE tester, equipment are able to measure the total iron. 26 Drain Oil Evaluation Laboratory Usually done with ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry). The oil is burnt in a flame and the emitted light and color is measured to establish the amount of metals and other elements. Laboratory Complete elemental analysis, gives possibility to evaluate the system oil amount present in the sample. Phosphor [P] is seldom present in cylinder oils, and the results can therefore be corrected for system oil dilution.
