2 Gulf Oil Marine GULFSEA ANALYTICA MINILAB With increasing pressure on vessel operators to reduce costs, a preventive maintenance approach to avoid costly failures is gaining ground amongst the shipping industry. The ability to quickly sample and test the lubricants on board ship, whilst in operation, plays a major role in this; it enables engineers to easily identify potential problems of, not only the lubricants, but also the engines and other crucial equipment, before they become critical. The GulfSea Analytica MiniLab, available from Gulf Oil Marine, is the ideal professional tool for your on-board technical team to maintain frequent surveillance on oil conditions, providing them with prompt indications when oil defects or deteriorations occurs, which helps ensure trouble-free operations. The engineers can then make informed operational and maintenance decisions, such as to immediately rectify a defect or to add fresh oil if BN has dipped below the limit this potential to save a lot of time and money. 3 HOW DOES IT WORK? The GulfSea Analytica MiniLab contains clear and straightforward sampling instructions, complete test procedures and includes advice on how to interpret the tests results. It is perfectly suitable for use on board all types of vessels. PART 1. SAMPLING PROCEDURE Compliance with the following good sampling principles will ensure more consistent and representative lubricant test results; Select a sampling point that is the line of flow and NOT in a dead leg to ensure a truly representative sample. Use the same sampling point every time. Ideally, mark the sampling point with a durable tag for future reference. Ensure the machinery is in operation and lube oil is at normal operating temperature. Flush sampling point with approximately 1 liter of lube oil before taking sample. PART 2. TESTS The following table indicates the appropriate tests for each machine or lubricating oil type. Note the GulfSea Analytica MiniLab can also be used to test the water content of marine fuels. Typically, it will detect 5-10% distillate fuel dilution of an SAE 30 or SAE 40 engine oil. It will also give an indication of an increase in viscosity, due to oil contamination. MEASURING USED OIL VISCOSITY This test is suitable for hydraulic oils, diesel engine oils, and gear oils. The procedures are simple and require no consumables. Regular testing of used oil viscosity provides early detection of contamination, fuel ingress or shearthinning, leading to informed maintenance decisions and preventing costly machinery downtime. INSOLUBLES Chromatography papers for this test enable a qualitative assessment of insoluble content of the oil. Regular testing for insolubles will help prevent lacquer formation on hot surfaces, sticking of piston rings and wear of cylinder liner and bearing surfaces. 2

4 DIGITAL DEVICE FOR BN & WATER The digital test unit enables the quick and accurate measurement of BN and water. The unit has an easyto-read digital display which provides both the instructions and the results. The unit has a five-year (10,000 tests) battery life and built in memory for recording previous test results. TRANSDUCER WATER IN OIL Regular testing prevents corrosion, cavitation or failure of your machinery, by detecting water in oil, before any damage occurs. It is good practice to check purifier efficiency by testing the water content of the lube oil before and after the purifier. This test should be undertaken once per week on each operational lube oil purifier. transducer BASE NUMBER (BN) The regular measurement of alkalinity reserve BN provides an indication the oil s continuing ability to neutralise acids from combustion. 5 Gulf Oil Marine GULFSEA SDA INSIGHT TEST KIT The oil used to lubricate the cylinders of large 2-stroke marine diesel engines has to contend with high temperatures and acidic p roducts fo r m e d d u r ing the combustion of sulphur-rich bunker oils; for this reason, cylinder oil is used on a continuous loss basis. In recent times, ship operators have taken to running engines at reduced speed, known as slow steaming, as a means of improving fuel consumption. Unfortunately, slow steaming is accompanied by a drop in engine temperature, which allows acid to precipitate and form on the cylinder liners thereby promoting cold corrosion. The iron compounds formed by this process are then flushed from the engine by the cylinder oil. This leads to excessive liner wear, requiring expensive replacement. The iron found in used cylinder oil samples exists in various forms and each of these has their own particular proper ties; there are metallic iron particles worn off the cylinder liner by catylitic fines, which exhibit strong ferromagnetism and may be detected using sophisticated laborator y equipment, and also iron sulphate and rust, which are formed during the combustion process by reactions with the cylinder liner, which cannot be detected magnetically. One way of mitigating the effects of cold corrosion is to increase the cylinder oil feed rate. However, over-lubrication can have a detrimental effect due to fouling of the rings and calcium deposit build-up. Knowing the exact operating conditions and wear mechanisms within the cylinders, allows fine adjustment of the feed rates to minimise wear and reduce costs. Engine OEM's have recently issued service letters giving guidance as to acceptable levels of corrosive wear. 6 Gulf Oil Marine s new GulfSea SDA Insight Test Kit is a quick, simple to use, chemical test that provides an accurate measure of the parts per million (ppm) value of Fe2+ and Fe3+ compounds in scrape-down oil. Also, rather than simply giving a figure for the TOTAL iron (including metallic compounds), which other tests provide, knowing the specific ppm of corroded iron allows critical decisions in adjusting the feed rates and the amount of Base Number (BN) to be used. This quick test (<5 minutes per cylinder) allows rapid analysis of scrape-down oil across the whole engine and obviates the need to send samples ashore for testing, thus avoiding long waiting periods for results. Major engine OEMs recommend a maximum cold corrosion figure of 200 ppm. Ideally, this should be kept below 100 ppm within the engine to maintain low wear levels. As recommended by OEMs, using the GulfSea SDA Insight Test Kit in conjunction with the GulfSea Analytica MiniLab to determine the residual Base Number (BN), an accurate picture of the operating conditions can be quickly determined and suitable corrective actions implemented.
