2 ALI Hindered Amino Resin Polyaspartic Coating Technology While polyurea technology has been in existence for more than 40 years, it wasn t until recently that two component polyurea coatings and spray elastomers attracted much commercial attention. A polyurea can be defined as a reaction product of an aliphatic or aromatic isocyanate component and a resin blend component, which is comprised of amine-terminated polymer resins and/or amine chain extenders. Traditional aliphatic polyurea formulations required high-pressure, hightemperature plural component spray systems to be applied due to fast initial reaction rates of less than one minute. Polyaspartic chemistry was first introduced in the early 1990s. Polyaspartics are considered to be a two-component coating/spray aliphatic polyurea hybrid system derived from the reaction product of an aliphatic polyisocyanate and a polyaspartic ester polymer, which is an amine/diamine functional coreactant for aliphatic polyisocyanate. ALI Hindered Amino Resins Arnette Polymers Ltd. has created a portfolio of polyaspartic chemistries called the ALI Hindered Amino Resins. ALI resins were designed to fill the formulating needs of the formulators by offering a range of products to provide formulating flexibility to meet a wide range of curing profiles. The ALI portfolio has 9 different resins offering different cure response profiles and properties depending on the application. ALI resins can be formulated with slower reaction than traditional polyurea rates to accommodate batchmixing and application by roller-applied methods or spray-applied through conventional single components paint sprayers without the use of solvent. An advantage of using ALI resins as the main component of the coreactant for reaction with an aliphatic polyisocyanate is the ability to create low to zero volatile organic compound (VOC) coating systems to meet many applications that require Next Day Return to Service. The rate of reaction of ALI resins can be manipulated, thus extending the pot-life and controlling the cure rate of aliphatic coatings. This allows formulators to create high solids coatings systems which are user-friendly with longer working times and still maintain a fast-cure. Adding Arnox 6 (an aldimine reactive diluent) to an ALI/ aliphatic polyisocyanate two-component system is an excellent choice to extend pot life and reduce system viscosity. ALI based coatings are UV and light stable and will not yellow like aromatic polyureas and polyurethanes. Hindered Amino Resins can be reacted with all types of isocyanate prepolymers and adducts - MDI, TDI and HDI based isocyanates. Typically HDI based isocyanates are chosen due to the aliphatic characteristics. MDI isocyanates tend to cause faster reaction while TDI based isocyanates tend to react slower due to low NCO group and possibly steric hinderance. HDI based isocyanate aliphatic nature make them the preferred isocyanate for most polyaspartic systems. Coatings That Require. Rapid Cure 2-4 hours properties development Low to No VOC Systems Good UV Resistance Good Chemical Properties Good Mechanical Properties Tensile Elongation Next Day Return to Service Humidity & Temperature Effects on ALI Resins Typical two-component coatings are not significantly affected by atmospheric humidity, however, changes in temperature do affect the cure response somewhat. ALI resins are affected by both, atmospheric humidity level and to a lesser degree by temperature. Relative humidity can have a dramatic change to dry time and pot life. Water/moisture in your coating system will have a catalytic effort on the cure response and pot life of final coatings. The addition of moisture from 0.10% to 0.20% can shorten the dry time in half. Changes in temperature can also affect pot life/dry time but not as dramatically as the addition of moisture. The combination of moisture and temperature should be considered when developing a formulation. Creating a ladder study to evaluate changes in relative humidity and temperature should be conducted to correctly predict dry times/pot life recommendations. The addition of Arnox 6 as a reactive diluent or a small amount of solvent can help control and lengthen pot life/ dry times. Arnox 6 is suggested at an additional level of 10% or less for coatings that are 10 mils or less. Adding Arnox 6 at levels over 10% to your formula can cause streaking or tiger stripping of the coating as it ages. Solvent evaporation rates relative to temperature should be evaluated because the effect on pot life/dry time. 2
3 For developing coating systems in environments with high humidity Arnox LV could be added to act as a reactive moisture scavenger. Arnox LV is a very low viscosity carbonate bridged bis-oxazolidine resinous material designed to be used as a reaction partner in conjunction with polyurethane type products. Arnox LV hydrolyses on exposure to moisture, yielding a reactive amine and hydroxyl functional cross-linking agent. It is designed for use in two component aliphatic systems to reduce VOC but may also be used in one component systems. Arnox LV Enables the production of low VOC polyurethane coatings without carbon dioxide gassing. Arnox LV is soluble in organic solvents such as ketones, esters, glycol ethers and hydrocarbons. Arnox LV can be used as bi- or tetra-functional latent curing agent. Typical uses: VOC Reduction in 2K, DOI enhancer, 1K MC systems. The addition of Arnox 6 and Arnox LV can have an effect on final film properties. It is important when formulating with these products with your ALI/aliphatic isocyanate system that final properties testing be confirmed. ALI Portfolio ALI 87 Fast pot life (4-8 min pot life with HDI trimer), behaves as chain extenders. Alternatives to products such as Clearlinks & Unilinks. Can also replace some DETDA, typically a modifying resin. ALI 138 Long Pot Life (gel time 100g - 77 min with low viscosity HDI trimer - can be hand mixed, squeegeed and back rolled), Medium - Fast Cure Speed (< 2 hours depending on the Isocyanate oligomers), for application that require more flexibility, produces a low shore D coating. ALI 140 Medium Pot Life (gel time 100g - 41 min with low viscosity HDI trimer - unlike most polyureas, can be hand mixed, squeegeed and back rolled), Medium - Fast Cure Speed (< 2 hours depending on the Isocyanate oligomers, for application that require a shore D 60 coating.) ALI 140S Long Pot Life (gel time 100g - 68 min with low viscosity HDI trimer - unlike most polyureas, can be hand mixed, squeegeed and back rolled), Medium - Fast Cure Speed (< 2 hours depending on the Isocyanate oligomers.) ALI 145 Moderate Pot Life (gel time 100g - 37 min with low viscosity HDI trimer) - unlike most polyureas, can be hand mixed, squeegeed and back rolled. Medium - Fast cure speed, depending on the isocyanate oligomer. ALI 158 Fast pot life (3-6 min pot life with HDI trimer), behaves as chain extenders. Alternatives to products such as Clearlinks & Unilinks. Can also replace some DETDA, typically a modifying resin. ALI 220 Very Fast cure speed (gel time 100g - 1 min with low viscosity HDI trimer), can be used as reactive accelerator and diluent. Good solvent, chemical and abrasion resistance. UV Resistant. ALI 420 Moderate Pot Life (gel time 100g - 38 min with low viscosity HDI trimer) - can be hand mixed and applied, but best blended with slower materials. Medium - Fast cure speed, depending on the isocyanate oligomer. ALI 520 Very Long Pot Life (gel time 100g min with low viscosity HDI trimer) - Often Used as pot life extender, but best blended with faster materials. Good solvent, chemical and abrasion resistance. UV Resistant. Reactive Diluent/Pot Life Retarder for ALI Resins Arnox 6 is an Aldimine reactive diluent designed to be used in polyurea and polyaspartic type systems as viscosity reducer and pot-life retarder. It may also be used in oxazolidine containing systems. Excellent for Reducing Viscosity in 2K Polyureas and Polyaspartics, Excellent for Lengthening, Pot Life in 2K Polyurea Systems, Co-Reactant when Oxazolidines are being Used. 11 Appendix 4: Hot Tire Pick-Up Resistance Testing HOT TIRE PICK-UP RESISTANCE TEST METHOD Coatings and sealers used on driveways and garage floors will be subject to warm tires on vehicles which are parked after being driven. This test determines the resistance of the coating or sealer to lifting or black marking from the hot tire under pressure. The tire tracking is simulated by attaching a hot, wet tire section to the surface of the coated or sealed concrete with ordinary "C" clamps. Imprint of the tread mark, lifting of the coating, and black mark left on the coating are evaluated in this test. Apparatus Used: 1. Paint Brush 2. Cheese Cloth 3. "C" Clamps 4. Aluminum Panels 5. Tire sections (2.S"X4") with two treads. (The tire can be slightly worn but have good tread remaining.) 6. Concrete plaques (4" X 8" X 0.5") 28 day cure F Oven Procedure: 1. The concrete plaques are coated twice with a brush at a uniform spreading rate of 200 sq. ft./gal. and allowed to air dry for 7 days. 2. The sealed surface that is to be tested is soaked with moist cheesecloth for one hour. (Cheesecloth removed prior to application of tire section.) 3. The tire section is placed under 140 F running water for one hour. 4. The tire section is then clamped tightly to the sealed surface using two "c" clamps and the metal panel to uniformly distribute pressure. 5. Test Method A: Apparatus remains clamped for 24 hours at room temperature. Test Method B: Apparatus remains clamped in 140 F oven for 1 hour. (very severe.) 6. The tire sections are then carefully removed and the coatings are evaluated for imprint of tread mark, lifting of the coating, amount of black marking.
