3 Introduction The use of Sealed Radioactive Sources (SRS), in Morocco, started very early (1939). radium sources were already being used in cancer center Bergonié in Casablanca The sealed radioactive sources are used in Morocco for various applications. After their operational life they are stored at the place of utilisation and transferred to the or to the supplier Until the disposal facility will be available, long term storage is the option adopted in Morocco 3

4 Legislative frame work Law No (12 October 1971) on the protection against ionizing radiation First article: Any private or public activity involving exposure to ionizing radiation, and in particular the production, importation, processing, handling, use, holding, storage, transport and disposal of radioactive substances is subject to an authorization or preliminary notification under conditions determined by decree 4

5 Legislative frame work In the annex of Decree n (28 October 1997) on the use of ionizing radiation for medical or dental purposes Article 16 The installation must have for the storage of radioactive waste awaiting collection, an area of 20 square meters, covered, fenced and marked, including: - A zone for radioactive waste conditioned in suitable container - A zone for liquid radioactive waste stored in appropriate containers between 1971 and 1997, there was a legislative gap 5

8 key dates for the management of radioactive sources Three key dates in the management of radioactive sealed sources 1979: Creation of the Central Service for Radiation Protection (CPRS) The first authorization was issued in 1979 by CPRS 1984 Mohammadia accident 8 deaths After this accident a decision was made that any user of radioactive sealed sources should have an interim storage First interim storage was built in promulgation of the law establishing as the responsible of the management of radioactive waste including DSRS To store the DSRS collected, has constructed a temporary storage January 1991 The first DSRS collected by was in 3/05/1991 8

12 Centralized long term storage facility Centralized facility The facility is designed to receive packages for interim storage of L/ILW conditioned in 120 liter drum The facility is designed to store 2496 drums stacked on four levels for 50 years (long term storage ) FACILITY DESIGN DESCRIPTION The facility is composed of four cells The facility has a reception hall to inspect the packages equipped with a traveling crane 12

13 Security of centralized facility 13 Technical and administrative security measures to protect the centralized storage are included in the general plan to protect the whole site The facility is equipped with 3Cameras inside and one outside Digital lock Alarm Detector of presence The facility is continuously monitored 24 h/74days by the gendarmerie and the unit of physical protection of the center.
