Bellsound stamped promo in very nice condition. Many folks have forgotten that in addition to the styrene boot this was counterfeited without a bellsound stamp and the infamous PB in the dead wax. In itself this is a rarity, but the original is most certainly very scarce now. B THE FLIRTATIONS STRONGER THAN HER LOVE FESTIVAL D VG Famously this is the Gypsies group from Old Town with the second of their two singles under a new name and before their move to the UK, where there first job was as backing singers on a Tom Jones tour. They have a good body of work but nothing finer than this one. Would have been spun alongside ITEM-A back in the day. Rarer multicoloured vinyl promo. C 21 ST CENTURY SHADOW OF A MEMORY NOEL 1 VG Two great sides (we ve also recorded Coming Right Back to confirm that statement) on the original and first label before 20 th Century. Basically this group were the Pentagons on Sutter and, for one release, the Themes on Minit Records. Shadow is a tremendous version, probably the original, of the Minnie Jones song. Not a perfect copy, please check the soundbite! D JOHNNY CASWELL YOU DON T LOVE ME ANYMORE DECCA VG D One of the finest blue-eyed stompers ever spun by the scene, with adrenalin and verve in every bar and chord. Producers Madara and White had hit big with Len Barry so why they couldn t make this one stick is anyone s guess. Caswell had a minor hit in 63 with At The Shore which was kind of an answer to At The Hop. His one attempt at a soul sound three years later did not cement his fortunes and he left Decca with an I.O.U. (check the flipside for this remarkably clever pun). E PAT & THE NEUROTICS LIKE THE WAY YOU DO CROWN 113 M- 250 YOUR THING Down to Birmingham Alabama for this rarity. Pat is one Pat Peterman who had a release on the 123 label where she re-cut the track in a slightly slower manner and with a different title, Love The Way You Do Your Thing. Pat was the sister-in-law of the writer/producer Daniel Peterman and the Neurotics backing band is rumoured to have featured Sam Dees (although if this is the case he didn t sing). F IVORYS PLEASE STAY DESPENZA VG First spun at Cleethorpes and, to be honest, not instantly acknowledged as the classic it is today. This is the first label, from Chicago, before the Wand release (where the spelling of the group s name was changed to a more grammatical Ivories ) rare as that one is, it s still a reissue so grab yourself the true original.

2 G FREDDIE BUTLER SAVE YOUR LOVE FOR ME WHEELSVILL E 1000 VG Easily the rarest record on the famed Detroit label and for many years a missin number in the listings. Butler actually hailed from Arkansas and despite recording on a number of occasions in Detroit including some Motown sessions, he was never more than a peripheral figure in the Motor City. As late as 1993 he was still making music. Most of his records, virtually all quite rare, now receive acclaim amongst collectors none more so than this one. H LAS VEGAS CONNECTION RUNNING BACK TO YOU HEP ME 169 VG Excellent seventies dancer we rarely find, although most records on this New Orleans label are common, this one is definitely tricky to locate. Most records tend towards Southern soul/blues as well but this great mover proves that they could turn out Modern Soul with the best of them. I LEE PORTER NOBODY S DOIN A DOGGONE THING S.O.H 026 VG Now here s a story. Back in 76 when Ian Levine wrote a column in the monthly Black Magazine (first place I ever heard of the Shrine label) he tipped this one, and in the era of Black Nasty, East Coast Connection etc it wasn t a bad call. Here is the rub, in the intervening 40 years I never saw the disc or heard it until it turned up on a Kent funk CD last year. Over the years a couple have turned up on EBay but this has to be a rarity. Check out the soundbite. J THE SOUL SHAKERS I M GETTING WEAKER LOMA 2047 VG Leonard Jewell Smith knew the sound to make back in 66/67 with many of his records being perfect for the UK in the next decade. But why? His releases never seemed to hit and are all rare. In fact the backing track to this one was used at least another two times but none better than this Teri-De gem. K HOWARD TATE YOU RE LOOKING GOOD UTOPIA 511 M- 200 This is Tate s first solo record prior to signing for Verve Records. Known since the days of the Torch it has always been a difficult 45 to find. Unrelated to the West Coast label of the same name this is most likely a New York imprint but there is a faint chance that it could be a Philadelphia label. L JUNE ALEXANDER THE GIRL THAT JUDD 1020 VG RADIATES CHARM Another debut disc, this time from Arthur Alexander in 1960 (the name June is short for Junior ) and a superb R&B dancer. First time ever on our list for this one and the label was owned by Jud Philips who was the brother of the legendary Sam Phillips (they mis-spelt Jud and just kept the logo). For sure a very rare record that you might not see for sale again in quite a while. M THE EL COROLS CHICK CHICK ROUSER 2954 M- 500 An odd copy was knocking around as a minor spin in the Stafford era, all of a sudden everyone realised that the 45 had been grossly underrated and that a frantic stormer lay waiting for the turntables. Somewhat reminiscent of Rodger Collin s She s Looking Good. It is very good news that there is room/demand for records like this today. Check out the flipside You Gotta Be An Angel, great Northern. Both available on the soundbite. N JIMMY ROBBINS I CAN T PLEASE YOU CANADIAN VG PRESIDENT 1005 Highly touted as a rare UK release on President, this Canadian release obviously occurred because of that one but must be incredibly rare if it didn t sell here then how many must it have sold in Canada?
