The who s who certainly set-up or appeared at this show. The floor enjoyed great activity offering some great material! This Black Dinosaurs Are your collecting strategies becoming Extinct? Approximately 65 million years ago (give or take a few days) dinosaurs became extinct. History has a funny way of repeating itself, as do people. The paper money industry (hobby) has been evolving dramatically in the last two to three years. Unfortunately, collectors and dealers don t always evolve with the marketplace. Eagle (one of ONLY 72 Total known) was one of the discovered treasures. As was a $20 Ripley, Ohio (National Bank Note) RED Seal, which Graded out CGC-62 Crisp Uncirculated! Many collectors get priced out of the market. This isn t to mean they cannot afford the notes they want, it s to mean they can t bring themselves to pay what s needed to procure the notes. Some collectors will tell themselves that they ll wait until they find the note at a cheaper price.and they wait. and they wait.. Many dishonest sellers know this weakness all to well (the man who wants to buy his wife a 3 ct. diamond GIA certified D flawless VVSI for $15k), not going to happen! So he settles for a raw stone that he s been told is of the same quality now he feels good he got a deal! No deal probably a scam. Many times the collector will never buy the note he wants or he settles for something he wants to believe in, and then becomes irate when he comes to learn that the great deal was indeed a scam Many collectors end of trying to return the note, then getting discouraged and many times becoming extinct and drop out of the market all together. Also, a gorgeous UNCUT sheet of $5 Red Seals was offered in a dealer s case. Included in some great Nationals was this #1 El Reno, Oklahoma (featured below), which graded out CGC-65 Gem! Gem Nationals (west of the Mississippi aren t easy to come by, especially #1 s. CGC has also graded a Pearsall, TX #1 in Gem 65 prior to this #1. This note (Oklahoma #1) is currently consigned to so check it out! The paper money segment of the show truly enjoyed high activity. Only complaining voiced was on the sparse material available (cont. pg12) something appears to be too good to be true then it probably is! We recently cut out a note out of Gem holder (a Chief) that the buyer said he scored on at $1,750. Now, does it seem reasonable (I thought to myself) that a TRUE Gem Chief can be purchased for $1,750. (only if we could turn the clock back I thought)? The note turned out to have three pressed out vertical folds. A score or a scam? Dealers are even more vulnerable of becoming extinct due mainly to their inability to change with the times. We saw this when coin grading was born. So many dealers highly discouraged their customers from collecting slabbed coins for a multitude of reasons (mainly loosing control of their customer & the ability to inflate the sales grade of the coin this is per the highest circulated coin publication - just recently). Although customers kept gathering at the cases filled with slabbed coins (some 18 years ago) and continued to buy these slabbed coins; many dealers held out therefore lost more sales and finally gave the collectors what they wanted Confidence in the grade! Throughout this evolution in the coin industry dealers jockeyed into position and many collectors hoarded away some very conservatively graded coins which later became worth many multiples of what they paid prosperity was soon to follow (pg. 12) PRICING, GRADING & POPULATION SUMMARY This is a Retail Publication, and is designed to reflect current market prices. These prices are procured from many sources, including: Dealers, Internet auctions, previous auction houses prices realized, striving to reflect current market prices. If the Note Type contains a range of Fr.# s, then the listed price reflects the most common Fr.#. This publication is in NO way instructing or suggesting for its readers to purchase at these levels. Grading ranges from Very Good ( 8) to Premium Gem ( 68). The listed prices were gathered from both professionally graded and independently graded sold notes. We did denote the observation that prof. graded notes generally sold for higher prices than independently graded notes. A Population Summary column is listed for ea. Note Type, many times with a range of Fr.# s. Example: Fr.# (1880 $10 Legal Tender) shows in the Population column-meaning there are are 24 notes in CU & up for Fr.#100, 6 notes (in CU & up) for Fr#101 & 38 notes (in CU & up) for Fr.#102. 13 Let s Talk Central States High activity! In Unc. and how prices have escalated so dramatically. The new hotel (Renaissance Grand Hotel) was a real treat! The entire hotel was remodeled and is just beautiful from floor to ceiling and at $99 a night rivaled the services I ve received at a $1,000 a night resorts. The food, oh boy.
