2 BRIEF HISTORY The Moon Glow is probably the most historic piece of equipment in the collec7on. It is the last remaining car of the 4 car General Motors demonstra7on Train of Tomorrow built in the late 1940's. The train toured the U.S. during 1947 stopping in Ogden in November of that year. Union Pacific bought the trainset including the E7 locomo7ve and ran it first as a sec7on of the City of Los Angeles then it was transferred to the Northwest doing service between Sea0le and Portland. The cars were eventually scrapped with the Moon Glow ending up in a scrap yard in Pocatello, Idaho. It was recognized for its historic value by a member of the NRHS who was passing through Pocatello. The Promontory Chapter of the NRHS was able to obtain the car through a dona7on by the scrap yard owner and in turn donated it to the Utah State Railroad Museum. Efforts have been made over the years to restore it but lack of funds have halted work. For some 7me it was being kept in a protec7ve building at the BDO but the building was torn down to make room for another business. It now sits in open air exposed to the elements with no current plans for restora7on, though some avenues are being explored.

7 RESTORATION PLAN FIRST PRIORITY IS TO GET CAR RELOCATED FROM CURRENT LOCATION AT BDO TO UNION STATION. CAR IS CURRENTLY ON THE UP- UT CENTRAL INTERCHANGE TRACK AT BDO. REQUIRES FRA WAIVER FOR UP TO MOVE. SECOND PRIORITY IS TO SECURE CAR FROM THE ELEMENTS/VANDALISM. WRAP ENTIRE CAR IN AUTOMOTIVE PLASTIC WRAP AND TARPS. BOARD SIDE WINDOWS AND DOORS. EXTERIOR OF CAR IS IN POOR CONDITION. MISSING SPECIAL FLUTED SIDE PANELS. ALL WINDOWS MISSING. HAVE SOME OF THE WINDOWS IN STORAGE. THIS PROPOSAL ASSUMES THAT THE DOME CAR IS TO BE COSMETICALLY RESTORED AT THIS TIME AND WILL NOT BE USED FOR SERVICE. PAINT SCHEME OPTIONS. SAME AS UNION PACIFIC PASSENGER CARS. MAIN BODY COLOR TO BE UNION PACIFIC ARMOUR YELLOW. BRIGHT RED STRIPING AT BODY TO ROOF LINE AND AT LOWER EDGE OF BODY. ROOF PAINTED HARBOR MIST GRAY; COULD BE COATED WITH GRAY ROOFING SEALER. TRUCKS UNION PACIFIC HARBOR ALUMINUM. ORIGINAL STAINLESS STEEL FINISH.

8 RESTORATION PLAN PHASE 1 - FRAME AND RUNNING GEAR: Inspect and clean frame, trucks, and coupler assemblies. Paint frame, trucks, and coupler assemblies. Paint color should be aluminum(gloss finish). PHASE 2 EXTERIOR SUPERSTRUCTURE: Sand end bulkheads and body sides. Locate replacement fluted side paneling. Salvage from other cars being scrapped. If in storage, retrieve from said storage loca7on. Prime all bare metal. Inspect roofing. Coat with gray roofing sealer or harbor mist gray paint. Paint body ends and sides. Paint striping on upper and lower body. PHASE 3 INTERIOR RESTORATION: Complete gukng of interior. Complete restora7on of mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems. Install replacement window glazing. Needs to comply with DOT and FRA regula7ons for window glazing. Reconstruct bar and lounge areas. Seat upholstery and carpe7ng. Tables
