2 The retractable undercarriages are available in four sizes: Stock number 9800A for models at a scale of for wheel diameters of 165, 152 and 140mm Stock number 9810A for models at a scale of for wheel diameters of 127 and 112mm Stock number 9820A for models at a scale of for wheel diameters of 100 and 90mm Stock number 9830A for models at a scale of for wheel diameters of 70 and 82mm A retractable undercarriage is essential for scale and semi-scale models. The FEMA retractable undercarriages are being used successfully for years and have demonstrated their ability in fl ight practice. Mr Gardemin wrote in his test report about retractable undercarriages:»fema retractable undercarriages are without any technical paraphernalia but they are designed 100% functional and sturdy.«we still feel obliged to this statement, now and in future. The new generation of FEMA retractable undercarriages for large sail-planes is a logical development of the proven undercarriages which we have been producing since The retractable undercarriages are designed modularly and thus can be adapted perfectly to different conditions. The undercarriages can be installed either fi rmly between two fuselage bulkheads or spring-loaded. If they are used together with FEMA solid tires, these retractable undercarriages withstand even extreme strains. The infl exible mounting between two bulkheads of the fuselage is perfect for standard models. It is advisable to use spring-loaded carriages for really soft touch-downs. The gas pressure spring makes the best Wheel cover from glass fi bre reinforced plastics. The wheel cover is an ideal splash guard and protects the inside of the fuselage against spraying water and dirt during take-off and landing. You just have to slide the wheel cover between the rocker arms of the retractable undercarriage and attach it with silicone adhesive. The wheel cover is retrofi ttable for all FEMA undercarriages, that have been previously delivered. possible damping even on the roughest runways. The damping can be adjusted to the weight of the model by three damping variations all of them available for immediate delivery. The required springiness of the gas pressure spring can be calculated as follows: Springiness (N)=model weight in kg x 40 (1kg~t10N) Gas pressure springs are available with a springiness of 200N, 300N, 400N. Models of more than 10kg require the attachment of 2 springs, more than 20kg require the attachment of three springs. We have made the mounting of the springloaded version considerably easier and also made room for the attachment of the moulded seat. The additional kit for spring-loaded mounting includes two stable aluminium angles with borings for the mounting. They are attached to the fuselage bulkhead with the same screws as the retractable undercarriage. This makes it possible to prepare the fuselage bulkhead as shown in the illustration and you obtain enough room for building in the moulded seat. For the safety of your model, we recommend the attachment of a wheel brake independently of whether the undercarriage is attached fi rmly or spring-loaded. The wheel brake is operated by a servo and it can be applied extremely sensible though its high brake power. If the retractable undercarriage is attached fi rmly, the brake-servo can be mounted on the front fasteningbulkhead or directly on the chassis of the undercarriage.

3 If it is attached spring-loaded, the brake-servo has to be attached to the chassis of the undercarriage in order to ensure the safely functioning of the wheel brake when the retractable undercarriage is spring defl ected. If the brakeservo is attached to the chassis of the undercarriage, an additional reversing lever (stock number 9890/22) is necessary. The retractable undercarriages have the following outstanding features: Reliable functions - Bolt mechanisms on both fi nal positions. Highly effi cient wheel brake - safety for model and operator. Spring-loaded installation - for really soft touch-downs. Robust attachment in the fuselage - between two plywood bulkheads. Installation height in the fuselage is relatively variable. Installation of 1 to 4 servos is easily possible in connection with the servo holder (landing gear rudder, vertical rudder and elevator rudder) The wheel frame made out of spring steel ensures a safe function of the ventral fl aps. A detailed instruction manual makes the installation as easy as possible. With these retractable undercarriages, we set new standards concerning quality, modularity and price. The control arms have an ideal holding force (without abrading a surface on the shaft) and can be positioned very sensitively. You can use clevis M3 or spherical head M2. Therefore, the servo can be mounted in a horizontal position for a smooth and linear operation of servo lever and undercarriage lever. It is recommended to operate the servo with a deflection of thus the tilted clevis is the ideal addition. The Z-shaped servo mount includes all necessary drill-holes for the assembly on the retractable undercarriage and for the installation of a standard servo. 7 Retractable undercarriage by FEMA for self launching large model gliders with nose drive (FES). Following the general trend that more and more large model gliders are equipped with a nosemounted motor, this retractable undercarriage represents the perfect solution. We extended the rocker arm by 30 mm to guarantee a smooth take off from the ground for large model The retractable undercarriage is suited for wheels with a diameter of 112 and 127 mm and is essentially identical with the well-proven retractable undercarriage of type 9810A. A higher effort is needed to open the landing gear door as it is activated by the landing gear. Basically every standard servo with a regulating time of more than 0.5 sec/40 is suited for the activation of the retractable landing gear. For a smooth motion sequence we recommend a low-speed steering servo with an amplitude of 180. The use of the Z-shaped servo mount with stock number 9890/60 and the angled clevis with stock number 9890/62 guarantees an ideal straight linkage.
