1 BEARINGS INTRODUCTION General Information The Uses and Limitations of This Manual This publication is a compilation of material from the Manufacturers whose products we are proud to distribute throughout Australia. The material has been selected to make it easy for bearings to be identified, so a replacement can be ordered, confident that the right bearing is being fitted and will give satisfactory service. While containing some technical information, this Manual is primarily for the identification of a replacement and not for selecting a bearing by load carrying capacity. There could, however, be occasions when the information contained in the Manual will prompt a question as to whether by selecting another type or size of bearing there would be a more satisfactory performance of the equipment into which the bearing is to be fitted. On these occasions would welcome your inquiry so we can provide expert advice. Before replacing a failed bearing it is a wise practice to consider if the failure appears premature. If it seems likely that this could be the case it may be worthwhile to refer to the Bearing Engineering Section of this manual showing various bearing failures and their likely causes. After all, there is little point in spending the money to carry out the replacement if the cause of the premature failure is not removed and rectified. The two common causes for bearing failure are lack of cleanliness and the fit of the bearing on the shaft and/or in the housing not being correct. They may well have been correct once upon a time - but what about now! That is why we have included tables which show some basic recommended tolerances in the Bearing Engineering Section of this Manual for the most important detail effecting bearing performance. If you are designing some new equipment and need to make an initial selection, please contact your nearest branch for assistance. When Should a Bearing Be Replaced? The usual signs that there is a troublesome bearing will be one or all of the following:- Rough running of the equipment effecting its performance Significant increase in the bearing temperature Abnormal noise from the bearing housing These conditions will prompt the scheduling of the equipment for inspection. After dismantling the equipment and identifying the problem, it is strongly recommended that even if the other bearing(s) on the same shaft as the failed bearing appears to be okay, it, too, should be replaced. In the long run this will prove to be an economically sound policy. Some may be cautious about that recommendation as well as the proposition that if a machine is being overhauled for reasons other than the bearings that, nonetheless, all the bearings are replaced. The reasons for these recommendations are:- The other bearing(s) on a shaft with a failed bearing have almost certainly been subjected to abnormal loading resulting from the rough running of that failed bearing which will cause it to fail at some time before the new bearing now being fitted. The same reasoning applies to a machine overhaul. In both cases, the following points are worth considering:- The cost of bearings is very small, relative to the cost of the loss of machine availability and its effect on production. There is no additional labour costs to fit new bearings while the machine is being reassembled. Stripping down a machine for major overhaul is frequently carried out in less than ideally clean conditions which makes it likely that rubbish will find its way into those parts of the bearing which are difficult to clean out and almost impossible to inspect, particularly Double Row Bearings - both ball and spherical roller. Even a single row tapered roller bearing is not really easy to clean thoroughly. When dismantling equipment, it is difficult to avoid the risk of bruising the tracks of ball bearings and scoring the tracks of roller bearings. In fact, some machine designs are such that to take them apart is almost impossible to avoid. Damage to bearings will probably not become obvious until the machine goes back into service - with frustrations to all concerned when it has to be returned to the workshop to be reworked. 2 BEARINGS Rolling Bearings : Structures and Types General Information STRUCTURE Rolling bearings (bearings hereinafter) normally comprise bearing rings, rolling elements and a cage. (see Fig. 1-1). Rolling elements are arranged between inner and outer rings with a cage, which retains the rolling elements in correct relative position, so they do not touch one another. With this structure, a smooth rolling motion is realized during operation. 2) Rolling element Rolling elements may be either balls or rollers. Many types of bearings with various shapes of rollers are available. Bearings are classified by the number of rows of rolling elements: e.g. single-row, double-row, or multi-row (triple or four-row) bearings. There are various materials and types of cages including pressed, machined, moulded, and pin type cages in Steel, Brass and Plastics. Due to lower friction resistance than that found in full complement roller and ball bearings, bearings with a cage are more suitable for use under high speed rotation. TYPE 1) Bearing Rings Thrust Ball Bearing Shaft washer Ball Housing Cage Note: In thrust bearings inner and outer rings are also called shaft washer and housing washer, respectively; in tapered roller bearings, the respective forms are cone and cup. The path of the rolling elements is called the raceway; and, the section of the bearing rings where the elements roll is called the raceway surface. In the case of ball bearings, since grooves are provided for the balls, they are also referred to as raceway grooves. The contact angle (α) is the angle formed by the direction of the load applied to the bearing rings and rolling elements, and a plan perpendicular to the shaft center, when the bearing is loaded. Bearings are classified into two types in accordance with the contact angle (α). Radial bearings (0 < α < 45 ) - designed to accommodate mainly radial load. Thrust bearings (45 < α < 90 ) - designed to accommodate mainly axial load. Rolling bearings are classified in Fig. 1-2, and characteristics of each bearing type are described in Tables 1-1 to The inner ring is normally engaged with a shaft; and, the outer ring with a housing. 2

Radial load and axial load in both directions can be accommodated. Suitable for operation at high speed, with low noise and low vibration. Sealed bearings employing steel shields or rubber seals are filled with the appropriate volume of grease when manufactured. Bearings with a flange or locating snap ring attached on the outer ring are easily mounted in housings for simple positioning of housing location. In spite of having the same boundary dimensions as standard bearings, maximum type bearings have a higher load rating because a filling slot on each of the inner and outer rings, allows a greater number of balls to be inserted than do standard bearings. Recommended Cages BL200 BL Pressed steel cage (ribbon type, snap type), copper alloy or phenolic resin machined cage, synthetic resin moulded cage. Main Applications Automobile: Front and rear wheels, transmissions, electric devices. Electric Equipment: Standard motors, electric appliances for domestic use. Others: Measuring instruments, internal combustion engines, construction equipment, railway rolling stock, cargo transport equipment, agricultural equipment, equipment for other industrial uses. 5

6 BEARINGS Table 1-2: Angular Contact Ball Bearings General Information Angular Contact Ball Bearings 7000, 7200, 7300, Contact Angle B, 7200B, 7300B, 7400B C, 7000C, 7200C, 7300C Contact Angle Contact Angle 24 Bearing rings and balls possess their own contact angle which is normally 15, 30, or 40. (Larger contact angle... higher resistance against axial load) (Smaller contact angle...more advantageous for high-speed rotation) Single-row bearings can accommodate radial load and axial load in one direction. DB and DF matched pair bearings and double-row bearings can accommodate radial load and axial load in both directions. DT matched pair bearing are used for applications where axial load in one direction is too large for one bearing to accept. Angular contact ball bearings are used for high accuracy and high-speed operation. Axial load in both directions and radial load can be accommodated by adapting a structure pairing two single-row angular contact ball bearings back to back. For bearings with no filling slot, the sealed type is available. Recommended cages Pressed steel cage (Conical type...single-row: S Type, Snap Type...double-row), copper alloy or phenolic resin machined cage, synthetic resin moulded cage. Main applications Single-row: Machine tool spindles, high frequency motors, gas turbines, centrifugal separators, front wheels of small size automobiles, differential pinion shafts Double-row: Hydraulic pumps, roots blowers, air-compressors, transmissions, fuel injection pumps, printing equipment 6

A four-point contact ball bearing can substitute for a faceto-face or back-to-back arrangement of angular contact ball bearings. Suitable for use under pure axial load or combined radial and axial load with heavy axial load. This type of bearing possesses a contact angle (a) determined in accordance with the axial load direction. This means that the bearing ring and balls contact each other at two points on the lines forming the contact angle. Recommended cage Copper alloy machined cage Main applications Aircraft jet engines, gas turbines 120, , , 2300 Spherical outer ring raceway allows self-alignment, accommodating shaft or housing deflection and misaligned mounting conditions. Tapered bore design can be mounted readily using an adaptor. N and NU types are ideal for use on the free side. They are movable in the shaft direction in response to changes in bearing position relative to the shaft or housing, which are caused by heat expansion of the shaft or improper mounting. NJ and NF types can accommodate axial load in one direction; and NH and NUP types can accommodate partial axial load in both directions. With separable inner and outer ring, this type ensures easy mounting. Due to their high rigidity, NNU and NN types are widely used in machine tool spindles. Recommended cages Pressed steel cage, copper alloy machined cage, pin type cage, synthetic resin moulded cage Main applications Large and medium size motors, traction motors, generators, internal combustion engines, gas turbines, machine tool spindles, speed reducers, cargo transport equipment, and other industrial equipment 8

Bearings with no inner rings function using heat treated and ground shafts as their raceway surface. Recommended cage Pressed steel cage Main applications Automobile engines, transmissions, pumps, power shovel wheel drums, hoists, overhead travelling cranes, compressors. The raceway surfaces of cone and cup and the rolling contact surface of rollers are designed so that the respective apexes converge at a point on the bearing center line. Single-row bearings can accommodate radial load and axial load in one direction, and double-row bearings can accommodate radial load and axial load in both directions. This type of bearing is suitable for use under heavy load or impact load. Bearings are classified into standard, intermediate and steep types, in accordance with their contact angle (a). The larger the contact angle is, the greater the bearing resistance to axial load. KH KDH KV KVE KVS Since cup and cone assembly can be separated from each other, mounting is easy. Bearings designated by the suffix J are interchangeable internationally. Items sized in inches are still widely used. Recommended cages Pressed steel cage, synthetic resin moulded cage, pin type cage. Main applications Automobile: Front and rear wheels, transmissions, differential pinion. Others: Machine tool spindles, construction equipment, large size agricultural equipment, railway rolling stock speed reduction gears, rolling mill roll necks and speed reducers, etc 10

With the bearing designed such that the circular arc center of the outer ring raceway matches with the bearing center, the bearing is self-aligning, insensitive to errors of alignment of the shaft relative to the housing, and to shaft bending. This type can accommodate radial load and axial load in both directions, which makes it especially suitable for applications in which heavy load or impact load is applied. The tapered bore type can be easily mounted/dismounted by using an adapter or withdrawal sleeve. There are two types of tapered bores (tapered ratio): 1 : 30 supplementary... Suitable for 1 : 12 [ ] code K30 series 240 and 241 supplementary... Suitable for series code K other than 240 & 241 [ ] Lubrication holes, a lubrication groove and anti-rotation pin hole can be provided on the outer ring. Lubrication holes and a lubrication groove can be provided on the inner ring, too. Recommended cages Copper alloy machined cage, pressed steel cage, pin type cage, synthetic resin moulded cage. Main applications Paper manufacturing equipment, speed reducers, railway rolling stock axle journals, rolling mill pinion stands, table rollers, crushers, shaker screens, printing equipment, wood working equipment, speed reducers for various industrial uses, plummer blocks. 11

12 BEARINGS Table 1-9: Thrust Ball Bearings General Information Thrust Ball Bearings U 53300U 53400U U 54300U 54400U This type of bearing comprises washer-shaped rings with raceway groove and ball and cage assembly. Washers to be mounted on shafts are called shaft washers (or inner rings); and, washers to be mounted into housings are housing washers (or outer rings). Central washers of double direction bearings are mounted on the shafts. Single direction bearings accommodate axial load in one direction, and double direction bearings accommodate axial load in both directions. (Both of these bearings cannot accommodate radial loads). Since bearings with a spherical back face are self-aligning, it helps to compensate for mounting errors. 13 BEARINGS Table 1-10: Cylindrical Roller Thrust Bearings Table 1-11: General Information Roller Thrust Bearings Needle Roller Thrust Bearings SINGLE DIRECTION SEPARABLE NON-SEPARABLE TMP This type of bearing comprises washer-shaped rings (shaft and housing washer) and cylindrical roller and cage assembly. Crowned cylindrical rollers produce uniform pressure distribution on roller/raceway contact surface. Axial load can be accommodated in one direction. Great axial load resistance and high axial rigidity are provided. Recommended cages Copper alloy machined cage. Main applications Oil excavators, iron and steel equipment. The separable type, comprising needle roller and cage thrust assembly and a washer, can be matched with a pressed thin washer or machined thick washer. The non-separable type comprises needle roller and cage thrust assembly and a precision pressed washer. Axial load can be accommodated in one direction. Due to the very small installation space required, this type contributes greatly to size reduction of application equipment. In many cases, needle roller and cage thrust assembly function by using the mounting surface of the application equipment, including shafts and housings, as its raceway surface. Recommended cages Pressed steel cage, synthetic resin moulded cage. Main applications Transmissions for automobiles, cultivators and machine tools. 13

14 BEARINGS Table 1-12: Tapered Roller Thrust Bearings General Information Roller Thrust Bearings Table 1-13: Spherical Roller Thrust Bearings T THR 2THR This type of bearing comprises tapered rollers (with spherical large end), which are uniformly guided by the ribs of the shaft and housing washers. Both shaft and housing washers and rollers have tapered surfaces whose apexes converge at a point on the bearing axis. Single direction bearings can accommodate axial load in one direction; and, double direction bearings can accommodate axial load in both directions. Double direction bearings are to be mounted such that their central washer is placed on the shaft shoulder. Since this type is treated with a clearance fit, the central washer must be fixed with a sleeve, etc This type of bearing, comprising barrel-shaped convex rollers arranged at an angle with the axis, is self-aligning due to spherical housing washer raceway; therefore, shaft inclination can be compensated for to a certain degree. Great axial load resistance is provided. This type can accommodate a small amount of radial load as well as heavy axial load. Normally, oil lubrication is employed. These bearings are suitable for applications that involve heavy radial and impact loading. They are also appropriate for high-speed applications in that they can be machined very accurately due to their structure. 68 ROLLER BEARINGS Procedure for Mounting Spherical Roller Bearings with Tapered Bore and using an Adapter Sleeve Spherical Roller Mounting Procedure 1 Unwrap bearing and inspect for internal clearance group. When supplied with housings they will usually be Normal Clearance - no suffix after number - or, C3 Clearance one group greater than normal. Multiply last two numerals of bearing number by 5 to determine nominal bore size in millimetres. Example: = 32 x 5 = 160mm Nominal Bore (bearing bore) 2 Measure bearing with feeler gauges and note actual internal clearance. Two rollers should be lined up side by side at top of the bearing and progressively larger feelers slid between rollers and outer race until beginning of interference is felt. Under no circumstances should bearing be rotated to roll feelers through - this will result in an erroneous reading. 3 From Actual Clearance measured, subtract Decrease in Radial Clearance from column B of TABLE 1 below to obtain required Residual Clearance. Example : 22232KC3 is measured at.230mm actual clearance which falls within the I.S.O. standard actual clearance range of.180 to.230mm. The Decrease in Radial Clearance for 22232KC3 column reads.075 to.100mm. Therefore the Residual Clearance range, which is what the bearing should measure within after tightening adapter, is :- Max = ( ) =.155mm and Min = ( ) =.130mm. 7 When bearings are in position, the adapter sleeves can be tightened. Fixed bearing should be tightened first, C spanners should be used where possible. Progressively, tighten locknut whilst feeler gauge readings are taken to achieve desired Residual Clearance. 8 The floating bearing should be positioned slightly off housing centre toward locknut side of sleeve so that as nut is tightened, bearing will be displaced approximately back to centre line. No spacer rings are used. 9 Grease should be worked into bearing for as much of circumference as possible, rotating occasionally. Basic grease capacity rule is that 1/2-1/3 of housing volumetric capacity be filled. This can be done by hand prior to fitting cap which can be plugged and only the taconite seals lubricated via nipples on a regular basis. High temperature or unusual applications may require a special grease selection and should be referred to your nearest branch. SUITABLE LUBRICANTS: Shell - ALvania R2, EP2 BP - Energrease LS2, LSEP2 Mobil - Grease 77, Mobilux EP2 Ampol - RRs, EP Grease C2 Caltex - Regal, Starfak, Premium 2 4 Bearings should be located or fixed in one housing and allowed to float in the other. Therefore, spacer rings will be used in one housing only. One or two spacer rings are used according to bearing size. If one is used, it should be located on locknut size. If two, they should be positioned each side of bearing. Two types of spacer rings commonly used are Solid (fully circular) and Gap types. 10 Housing cap, after cleaning, can be assembled to bodies (not interchangeable). Feeler gauge should be tried between housing base and frame pad to ensure flatness and that shims are not required. Base bolts can be tightened. Check that rotation is free and not impaired. Taconite seals should be fitted. Adjust housing base alignment to allow constant clearance around circumference of rotating labyrinth and taconite cover body. Seals should be lubricated until grease extrudes fully around labyrinth circumference. DO NOT overgrease bearing housing as damage and overheating can occur during initial running period. 5 Bearings, adapter sleeves, rotating seal components and solid spacer rings should be fitted loosely to shaft in approximately required positions. The taconite seals (with outer casting) can be positioned already assembled. Otherwise, rotating labyrinth and oil seal can be positioned loosely. 6 After cleaning, set up bases in position. Fit base bolts (if on base frame) but leave loose so that bases can be moved later to provide correct shaft alignment. Lower bearings and shaft assembly into position carefully, re-spacing components as required. TABLE 1. 107 BALL BRG UNITS Take Up: Pressed Metal MSTU The MSTU Pressed Steel Take-Up Unit is a light duty, economical, easy to mount unit for adjusting shafts and belt tightening devices on many types of conveyors and elevators. It is adaptable to either guide type or bolt type methods of mounting. The new design of bearing seat incorporated in the base plate is made to a looser than normal fit to ensure bearing self-alignment without loosening the flangette bolts. This assures self-alignment of the bearings, if the two take-up units are not pulled up evenly. The MSTU Take-Up Unit incorporates an AEL/AS series wide inner ring bearing. A complete MSTU Take-Up Unit consists of MSTU base plate, MST flangette, and AEL/AS bearing. The units are available in pillow block, two bolt and four bolt flange configurations and are capable of accommodating initial misalignment from mounting errors. In operating the units have proven reliability in the most hostile applications. Relubrication is possible for long trouble-free life - minimising maintenance, maximising productivity and helping maintain hygiene standards. Silver-Lube housings are made from Valoxâ 420 thermoplastic resin which in addition to being non-corrodable is resistant to detergents and a wide range of chemicals. The housings are paint and coating free which prevents chipping or flaking and have smooth surfaces to assist thorough washdowns. The housing material also demonstrates fungicidal resistance. Silver-Lube bearing inserts are made from stainless steel, are provided with effective, efficient sealing arrangements, and are charged with a USDA H1 approved food grade grease as standard. 126 BALL BRG UNITS Graph 1: Strength retention after 6 months in water Silver Lube Housings WATER AND STEAM RESISTANCE Silver-Lube housings are suitable for use in applications where frequent washdowns occurs. After continuous immersion in water, Valox 420 resins exhibit very little loss of strength at water temperatures up to 150 F(65 C). Higher temperatures may be endured on an intermittent basis, but are not recommended for continuous use due to the associated loss of housing strength. See graph 1. Silver-Lube housings are not recommended for prolonged immersion or extended exposure to water vapour. In applications where prolonged water vapour exposure occurs some loss of housing strength may result. For more information please contact NSK-RHP. Graph 2: Tensile strength versus temperature (Valox 420 resin) ULTRAVIOLET RESISTANCE Valox (natural coloured) resin has been tested for resistance to ultraviolet ageing by exposure to direct sunlight in Florida and in Arizona for five years. Valox retained approximately 75% of its original strength, toughness and flexibility after five years of Florida and Arizona exposure. HEAT RESISTANCE The operating temperature range of Silver-Lube Valox 420 resin housings is -20 C to +90 C. Higher temperatures may be endured for short periods, for example during cleaning. However, where peak temperatures exceed +100 C for an extended period please contact NSK- RHP. The maximum housing loads published in this catalogue are based on tests conducted at 20 C. The tensile strength of Valox 420 resin varies with temperature, see graph 2, above. Bearing Operating Temperature Housing Temperature/Strength Factor -20 C C C C C C C C C C C C 0.40 Designers and end users must ensure that housing strength is adequate at the unit operating temperature by adjusting the published housing strength at 20 C, detailed in Tables 8, 9 and 10 by using the Housing Temperature/Strength Factor listed in Table 7. For example, the maximum housing load for a bearing operating at 40 C is 1.75 of the published maximum housing load at 20 C. When evaluating housing strength it is important to establish the bearing operating temperature and not to consider the ambient temperature alone. Bearing operating temperature is dependent on ambient temperature and bearing load and speed. For high speed applications, bearing temperatures in excess of 60 C are common. 127 BALL BRG UNITS Silver Lube Housings HOUSING STRENGTH Housing load carrying capacity varies depending on the application loading regime, which may be intermittent, continuous or cyclic. Maximum housing loads are given in the tables below. These loads must not be exceeded without prior consultation with NSK-RHP. Published housing maximum load capacities do not allow for any reduction in housing strength caused by exposure of the housing to chemicals, water, steam, heat, ultraviolet light or any combination of these factors. If any of these factors are present in the application the designer or end user must establish the effect of these exposures and reduce the published maximum housing load accordingly. To maximise load carrying capacity it is recommended that washers are used with the fixing bolts. The tables below also detail maximum fixing bolt tightening torques.
