Atlas Copco s trade fair presentation in Munich focused on efficient, oil-free ZS screw blowers for pressure rises from 300 to 1250 mbar and entirely oil-free ZB turbo blowers for especially high performance. Using these blower solutions, operators of wastewater treatment facilities can aerate their biological treatment tanks in an energy-efficient way; they can also be used for treating water in swimming pools. After about two decades, the machine fleets of wastewater treatment plants have reached the end of their economical working life, explains Thorsten Poggenmöller, product manager for low-pressure systems with Atlas Copco in Essen. He adds that it is beneficial to review the economics of the blower station at the end of this period and to switch over to more efficient screw or turbo blowers. Compared with a conventional lobe blower, the operator can achieve energy savings of up to 30% using more efficient ZS screw or ZB VSD Turbo blowers. 2 IFAT: Atlas Copco presented new screw and turbo blowers 2/5 Only screw blowers achieve fast payback periods The energy requirements of the ZS blowers which Atlas Copco presented at IFAT are about one-third below those of conventional lobe blowers. With the ZB Turbo blowers, the power bill may be reduced by as much as 60 percent, Poggenmöller adds. Although lobe blowers are still used at many wastewater treatment plants, the low-pressure specialist advises against these units. They simply no longer represent the state of the art, he says. Thanks to their direct drive system and internal, oil-free compression, screw blowers are considerably more efficient and have lower maintenance requirements. The ZS screw blowers are available with ratings from 18.5 kw to 315 kw, with or without variable-speed drives. The variable-speed units adapt their flow rate directly to the actual air demand of the clarifier in line with biological conditions. This allows a considerable reduction in energy consumption. The specific unit on show at the Atlas Copco stand was a ZS 75 screw blower. The blower delivers certified oil-free air in accordance with class 0 of ISO at volume flow rates between 800 and 11,000 m 3 /h. A number of different solutions are available. For example, the blower can be supplied complete with an integrated switchgear cabinet, controller and programmed frequency converter; if this solution is adopted, the user receives a complete blower station ready for use. The screw blower can also be supplied without these components if a central switchgear cabinet is available on site. In both cases, very little installation work by the user is required. The ZS series has a CE certificate and features a very wide control range. And Poggenmöller emphasizes: Specific power consumption remains constant at a very low level over the entire control range. At IFAT, Atlas Copco also showed the new ZB 250 turbo blower recently added to the ZB range. The single-stage turbo blower with direct drive and magnetic motor bearings operates entirely without oil. It is suitable for the low-pressure range from 300 to 1,000 mbar, with usable volume flow rates between 1,000 m³/h and 11,000 m³/h. The ZB blowers have motors with ratings from 100 to 250 kw, allow

Our product portfolio is so wide that we can offer potential customers the best possible solution in line with their requirements, says Thorsten Poggenmöller. The advantages are the same as those of the ZS series: high efficiency with direct drive system, oil-free operation, low maintenance requirements and ease of installation.
