1 Sunday JULY 31st After 9 years of using the Counts annual July Swap Meet at the Clubhouse property as a club fund raiser, things are going quite smoothly, especially with Denny Volmer in charge for so many years. This years event was a little down in both vendors and buyer attendance. Maybe the hot weather was the cause and there were predictions of a storm coming in, That didn t happen but those that were there did fairly well. Ann and I were able to sell some more rod run T shirts so that was a good deal! I did talk to quite a few of our old friends that always attend the Count Swap Meet and it was once again like Old Home Week Reunion. JN Counts Streetin News, SUMMER 2015 Page 14

2 JUNE 11th 2016 The 2nd Saturday of June has become the day for the St. Judes Benefit Car Show sponsored by the Private Stock and adjoining Shamrock Auto Sales CAR LOTS on west Chicago St This year, sorry to say, the attendance, both entrants and spectators eas down by at least 50 %. This year mainly due to the extremely hot, 100+ degrees. Hopefully they raised a sizeable chunk of cash for this worthy charity. The Counts were fairly well represented in the 40 to 50 cars that showed up.. In the die hards that showed their cars there were some new faces once again. Maybe next year the weather man will co-operate and have a cooler afternoon for the show. JN Nice 699 Camaro Vern Hook had his 56 Chevy 34 Pontiac and a 32 Ford This is a nice 56 Bel Air Dxnny Henriksons409 cool 50 s Chevy PU Hot 70 s cars One of our Counts members, Don Oskey was a participant on part of the Street Rodder Road Tour that started in Wisconsin and stopped in Rapid City, at the La Quinta Inn, on Monday eve, June 20th. On their way to Pueblo, Colorado and the NSRA Rocky Mtn. Street Rod Nationals. The Counts were invited to come out and say Hi to the 30+ Tour participants.. I got the opportunity to visit with one of last years BH Rod Run entrants, Dave Ubl and his wife as well as Kevin Gribble from Watertown. 3 The winners of the $50,000 were, the team of Pike and Hadskey Prior to this years Great Race I was quite uninformed about all that goes into the sponsorship, planning as well as the execution of this highly popular event. Over 120 cars started the event in Sacramento California and traveled through at least 7 states to arrive in Moline, Il. On Sunday June 26 after 8 grueling days and lots of timed stops. Around $150,000 was up for grabs in 5 classes and the top winner in a 1917 Hudson won $50,000 The surprise of the week was the stop in Rapid City on Thursday June 23rd. Down town was blocked off for Summer Nights and all the cars parked on St. Joe st from 6th st to 8th st. It was an impressive sight as the croud of spectators was overwhelming to say the least. Add all the entertainment that Summer Nights had and it was mind blowing. Believe it or not but there was a class for several street rods as well as antiques, trucks, sport cars and foreign cars. If you missed the fun you missed a great show of cars and people. Check out the great race on you Google search for details JN. The winning team car was this 1917 Hudson driven by Pike and Hadskey This was the Haggarty 1946 Hershey build truck This 1940 Buick Convertible was a class winner too. Lots of different classes were in this race Pickups and classics all had a class to enter the Hreat Race and be a winner Sport cars of all vintages including a Jaguar How about a early IHC Diesal powered too Counts Streetin News, Summer 201, Page 16

4 This was about the 6th or 7th annual Whitewood, SD Cruis in and as usual it was a biggie. The quantity of cars that attend this FREE show is close to 125 before the Camaros show up around 3:30 and make a double row of nearly a hundred Camaros down the 3 blocks of Main St. It is an impressive sight to say the least. What impresses me the most is that at least half of the cars are different each year and this year was no exception. Lots of 50 s and 60 s cars as well as street rods, pickups and LOTS of competition cars of all classes on display. One of the 2 dragsters does a fire up several times during the afternoon and I will say that the sponsors and the host group go out of their way to provide lots of prizes to be won by buying 50/50 tickets. Once again the weather was perfect, high 80 s and no rain. Put this activities to attend next June, the last Saturday. JN Machines and customs galore This Dragster put on a show COOL 50 s cars Osky s 34 and Van Houten s A Cool Plymouth machine New addition to the rod scene Nice GMC pickup made it s debut Counts Streetin News, SUMMER 2016, Page 17

5 It was the day before the 4th. Of July and they came out in force to celebrate the Mile High Car Show held in the open pit picnic area parking lot. This years event was another great show of cars, trucks, customs, rods and street machines, over 125 this year. Many thanks to the Nelsons, show promoters for lining up so many sponsors and class trophies. The cars that impressed me the most were all the 1956 Chevys on hand as well as Ron Meis s 2 Kindigit built custom machines, 65 GTO and his latest, a 59 Buick Invicta hardtop. Another mind blowing car was a street rod 1934 Plymouth sedan delivery from Florida. This show just gets better each year and the weather seems to co-operate on this great weekend. 6 COOL BIG Cadillac The Black Vette got keyed ND Corvettes, a pair Saturday started with coffee and cookies followed by a drivers meeting to inform all the Rod Run participants what the route was and the rules to follow so everyone was able to stay together. Nearly 70 cars made the trip through the southern Black Hills ending up at the city park in Custer, SD for a lunch break furnished by the Counts with the help of Steve and Deb Kroger and Bob and Shirley Mallow. Thanks for the ride, Bob. Jim and Ann. For some reason, this years run developed more break downs (9) than we have had in years. The tow vehicle was kept busy getting cars to a place where their minor problems could be fixed and get back on the cruise with every body. The heat was a major factor and all were repaired before supper at the club house in Black Hawk. The tour as usual, was around 80 miles of scenic Black Hills beauty! After the Cruise we sat down for a delicious Spaghetti Super, prepared by our resident chef, Kurt Desinger and supplemented with side dishes furnished by the Counts club members. 120 people were fed. After a short break to let the meal settle and then we had awards. A special plaque was presented to the club commemorating the Run as a MERLE McCOY late club member, MEMORIAL ROD RUN! The quality was second to none and entrants traveled from at least5 states to be part of the fun. I was especially impressed with the radical custom copper colored 1952 Buick as well as the WILD street machine 65 red Mustang with the chromed blower sticking through the hood called Crazy Horse.
