10 ARCHITECTURAL CASTINGS 10 Advice and general information Columns: The column heights shown on the following pages are those to which our casting patterns are currently set. We can vary the heights and even the proportions of base/shaft/top but this can involve substantial alterations to our patterns and add considerably to the cost, particularly if only one or two are required. An alternative is to use composite columns - see previous pages. If there is a design you like but not shown at the height you want, please contact us and we ll work out the best way of resolving the problem. Most of our columns come complete with a flanged baseplate. If you want some other form of base and/or some fixing brackets at column top level, we can usually provide what s needed and at minimal cost. The same applies to special fixings needed elsewhere on the column - to provide a balustrade connection for example. Larger diameter columns can be used as rainwater outlets, using either the bore of the column itself or a an internal sleeve - usually a plastic. Rainwater can be run straight through the column base or out sideways onto paving via a cast rainwater spitter. If columns are used as unsleeved r.w. outlets, they must be rodded clear at regular intervals as any build-up of wet material can lead to frost-cracking - something all too familiar on Victorian bandstands and canopies!! Spandrels, beams and decorative elements: The following drawings only show these elements in two dimensions. Some are more slender than they look; others are chunkier. Feel free to suggest any combination you like - we ll advise if they don t make a good aesthetic match. We can provide fixings to connect any of the decorative elements to columns. We can also dry-run assemble a row of columns, beams, spandrels etc and deliver them to you as a test-fitted kit. Unless stated otherwise, all the fixing bolts we supply are stainless steel. All of our architectural castings are normally made in a high-silicon cast aluminium alloy. The silicon content increases the tensile strength and corrosion resistance of the metal and also makes it more fluid for us when we re pouring the casting. We can provide castings in other alloys, in bronze and in cast iron where required We have many more patterns in stock than are currently shown on these pages.
