2 From the Directors Chair August 2013 Well First and FOREMOST!!! John Drengenberg THANK YOU!!!, again an outstanding job on the parades and a full 100% turn out for all the communities. John you did it again and we all thank you and I thank all of YOU who participated and those that participated in multiples. your great. It was a beautiful day for parades, no overheating anywhere and everyone had a great time. The ice cream was nice and cold and tasty after the parades and I hope you all had a great holiday! As I am writing this I have just returned from the AACA event at Cantigny, the former Lake Forest Show. Outstanding. The AACA always puts on a great event and supports the Ill. Region and MARC in every way it can. There were 9 Model A Fords of every type and they had a great turn out on a great day. Congratulations on a great event and a new and exciting venue. I would tell all of you to make this part of your yearly schedule every July. Well as of this column we have over 100 members and guests signed up for the picnic. A big thank you goes out to our Hosts Marilyn and John Krenger, your hospitality does not go unnoticed and we appreciate it more than you can imagine!!, more on the picnic tonight! The 24th of August is our MODEL A & T Swap for the benefit of MAFFI and the Model A Museum. I NEED YOUR HELP!!! PLEASE see myself after the meeting if you can assist. This is a big event on a small scale and we have had a great amount of participation on this. If you need parts and want to support our Museum this is the place to be on Saturday August 24th, PLEASE Take a flyer with you. Lil Val and her team will have Tommy s Grill open with new and exciting treats. See you there. If you are interested in running for a position please see me after the meeting. We will also be looking to fill the position of activities director as well as an Asst. 3 Minutes: MAFCA/MARC Membership Meeting - July 2, 2013 Unfortunately Rose was out at the last meeting. Prior to the meeting, the annual parking lot swap took place. The meeting was rather short as a result of the swap. One topic that was brought up at the meetings of extreme importance is that the New Illinois Region Directory needs your information. PLEASE MAIL THE FORM BELOW TO JOHN SILVESTRI AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. The Deadline for the form is this evening, August 6, 2013.

4 Spark Plug 101 The following information and photos were based on a presentation put together by Andy Wiedeman of the Rocky Mountain A s ( and given to me by Mark Maron. Spark Plug History: - Spark plugs were invented in 1898 by Charles Lodge (for radio telegraphy). - Albert Champion formed Champion Spark Plug in Champion split into Champion and AC (GM) in Before 1935 Champions were used in all new automobiles. - The Model A Champion Spark Plug: o the 3com was the forerunner of the Model A plug o the plug was the #3, Ford called it the 3X o the replacement for the 3X was the C16C o the replacement for the C 16C was the W16Y - Autolite began supplying Chrysler spark plugs in 1931, and made a Model A replacement spark plug Ford purchased Autolite in 1961 antitrust violation followed in Ford sole Autolite to Bendix in 1972 created Motorcraft. - Ford spark plugs are not manufactured by Motorcraft Model a replacement spark plug TT10 The Champion C4 is NOT a Replacement: - Many Model A Forums on the Internet claim that the Champion C4 is a replacement for the 3X Model A. plug... Not So, the 1932 Ford Service Bulletin shows the 4 cyl plug and the V8 Plug. The C4 was used on the 1932 Ford V8 not the 4 cylinder version (Model B). - The C4 is shorter with a protruding electrode thus a COOLER temp range. - If you want a plug that "looks" like a 3X (not show quality) but has a lower heat range then it can be used... but may foul in a "loose" engine. Its all about Heat Ranges Too Cold = Oil Fouling Too Hot = Pre-ignition Loss of Power

5 So Which Plug to Use? Colder or Hotter? Modern Plugs or Repro 3X Plugs? Well... That depends: - For a Show Car Fine Points Judging you must use 3X. - If you have a driver and are unsure about what to use choose a cooler plug - since the worst thing that can happen is it will oil foul. - For a driver... use a Motorcraft TT10 for a newer engine. - If you want Champions your choice is a W16Y. The W16Y replaced the Champion 3 and 3X in If you want a good Driver plug use the Ford TT10. Spark Plugs in the Combustion Chamber

6 How to Read a Spark Plug So What's with the X - Why is the Original A plug a 3X and not a 3? - Plain old fashioned merchandising. - In 1911 Ford and Champion made a deal. - Champion would sell plugs to Ford at Cost... Making $ on the replacement plug market. Ford would advertise the use of Champion Plugs in all Model T Fords and recommend them in the operator s manual. To ensure that owners would buy Champions they called the Model T plug a Champion X. By 1927 Champion had sold many millions of X plugs that Ford continued this with the Model A. The "New" Spark Plug for the Model A was a copy of the Champion No. 3 which was used on many other autos of the era. The Model A spark plug was called a Champion 3X giving the customer the impression that the 3X is different than the more common No. 3. If you find a No. 3 you can use it in a Model A... since its the same.

8 The Fashionable Model A Era ( ) Ford Dealership Clothing There were a number of articles written in the Ford Dealer and Service Field magazine, which was a dealer s magazine not actually connected with the Ford Motor Company, but often purchased by Dealers for 25 cents per copy, or $2.00 for a year s subscription. In the above mentioned article, it was stressed that it is not only the advisability, but also the necessity, of every dealer that the men in the service department brought themselves and their methods up to date. Equipping themselves meat that they not only should have the knowledge but should also know how to handle the public, which included courtesy in deportment and neatness in appearance. The article mentions that one dealer in Detroit, Peter J. Platte, employed a floor man who greeted customers as they came in while wearing a service coat. The service coat was about ¾ in length, had big pockets and the Ford trademark across the back. As a result of efforts such as these, Ford entered into an arrangement with Hamilton Carhartt Overall Company for official Ford service uniforms which were not for sale on the open market, but could be purchased from Carhartt at direct from the factory prices. Reproductions of the jackets have been made, although a general search did not reveal a current manufacturer.

10 Editor s Notes Colin James Steering wheels were on my list this July. I ended up replacing both the steering wheels in the Tudor and the Phaeton. The reason for the switch in the Tudor, as evident when I removed the wheel, was when turning, the light switch would engage because of a large chunk that was missing from the center of the steering wheel. The phaeton, on the other hand, needed a new wheel because of a number of cracks that were visually unappealing. Since the horn rod was out on the Phaeton, I was also able to stop an annoying rattle that kept coming from the horn switch. With a little JB Weld (after a failed attempt of using silicone), the rattle disappeared and we are back in business.
