This TOTS is very much good news and bad news and I would ask you to read the AND FINALLY section at the end. By far the worst bad news was the sudden death of Derek Barrett, one of the grand old men of the hobby. He was also a good friend and was always generous and helpful and set standards that many of us struggle to meet. There was a cremation near Caen with his immediate family present and the 1/200 community represented by Jean-Pierre Cottu whose superb models have been often shown in TOTS. Later on there was a memorial service in his parish church in Norwich. This was very well attended by family and friends from various aspects of his life. The 1/200 community was represented by Wojtek Benzinski, Denis and Hilary Calvert and Chris Sayer. I have passed on all your comments to Amy and Edward. Derek s son and daughter have asked Wojtek and me to help with Derek s collection of models. I am delighted that they want to keep samples of his own models for themselves but are probably less interested in those from other people. It is likely that many of these will be up for sale. I will sent details when we know what is happening. It may be possible to have some at the October meeting. I have about masters of models Derek planned to produce and we will look at the feasibility of producing some, but read the AND FINALLY section to see the problem. OCTOBER MEETING After a great deal of hesitation I have decided to arrange another meeting at the Midland Air Museum at Coventry Airport on Sunday October 8th. I considered other venues but they were either more expensive or lacked the accessibility of MAM. Whether this is the last will depend on umbers. If 25 or more people attend then I will repeat it next year. Less than 25 means it is unaffordable. It costs us 150 to book the room but we charge visitors for the refreshments only AND you get free entry to the museum so it is a bargain. Those of us with tables share the costs and we will be a smaller group this year. This year there is also an Aviation Enthusiast s Fair in the hangars so it will be an even more attractive event. It is intended as a social event as well as a buying opportunity so I hope more will attend this time. More details will follow nearer the time. THE GOOD NEWS Although it is becoming more and more difficult to produce models there are several in the pipeline with the October meet as the target. SHED MODELS and DECALS I have several new models in the pipeline. Wojtek is producing the Languedoc to an extremely high standard and has kindly produced a special variant for SHED to make the test version that had the Leduc aircraft on its back.

Here is a photo of the first model, made by Wojtek. Cessna AT-17 Bobcat Lockheed L133 In 1939 Lockheed began to design a remarkable aircraft around new engines, the L1000s. This should have been America s first jet fighter. These engines were axial flow at a time when all the others were radial flow. Unfortunately, the materials to make this possible were not available and the project foundered. This is how the L133 would have looked. The provisional name was the Lockheed Starjet. The Bobcat is one of the most widely used and little known aircraft of WWII. 14 countries used it in one form or another were built under one label or another - Bobcat, Crane, T50, AT8, UC78, JRC-1, Bamboo Bomber.

Aero Commander Most people will think of Bob Hoover s managed energy display when Aero Commanders are mentioned. In fact it was used by the armed forces of 15 countries. This is another under recognised machine. Rockwell XFV 12 The XFV 12 was one of the varied attempts to achieve vertical take off. Only the Harrier was successful, partly because it avoided carting around heavy equipment that was only used to take off or land. Compare the weights and fuel capacities of the F35A and F35B to see that some people still have not taken note of this. It is not clear if it flew or not. It is likely that it did as they considered flying it from one test airfield to another but it was not successful as a VTOL aircraft.

Short Sealand The Short Sealand was Short s last amphibian/flying boat and was a small 6/7 seat twin engine machine. 25 were built and used by 9 users, the Indian Navy and Shell being the principal operators.

In addition to these I hope to have two other models available in limited numbers at the October meetings. They will not appear on my normal lists and I will say only that one is an interesting WWII transport that has not been done before in 1/200 and the other is a British trainer version of a very fast jet. I was also hoping to bring out more of the limited run biplanes but am hesitating to do this as the results of the first batch was that half of the people who expressed an interest did not actually buy them when they were produced. This is why they are still on my lists. In fact when I brought out the last sets of models last autumn I had many advanced expressions of interest in them which were not fulfilled to the tune of 980. I have decided that sales of most models have stagnated for so long that I will not be having them recast when I run out of castings. If there is something you have been meaning to get - don t leave it too long. Chris

IMPORTANT Please read Shed Decals are laser printed. This means the colours are very accurate, registration is perfect and decals are thin but strong. It also allows shading and graduation of colours. There are two problems, namely that white cannot be printed and colours are not very opaque. If the decal has straight edges and can be easily cut out accurately then the decals are printed on white decal paper. If not, we can supply white base decals as listed below. For a roundel, for example, put the appropriate base decal on first, allow it to dry then apply the top decal. It says which base decals are needed on the list, don t forget to buy them as well as the top decal. 13 News from Cloudbreak Models August 2017 Chris has already written a tribute to Derek, but I would like to add a few words about Derek myself. We have lost a good friend and fellow aviation enthusiast. Derek was one of the great devotees of 1/200 th modelling. His superb models are prized by collectors the world over. He was a pillar of the U.K.1/200 scene. Always ready to give advice and share his vast expertise, Derek was an inspiration to me and many others. We will all miss him greatly. Forthcoming models The Boeing B-307 Stratoliner is now ready. As mentioned in previous newsletters, our version is the post-war TWA model. After wartime service with the USAAF, TWA returned the aircraft to Boeings for complete overhaul and modifications. Among the changes Boeing fitted B-17G wings and tailplane. Decal / transfer options include: 1. USAAF delivery markings 2. TWA livery 3. UAT / Aeromaritime livery The model is cast in resin with white metal props and undercarriage. The mainwheel tyres are rubber. The Boeing Stratoliner is available for GBP plus postage and packing at cost.

SNCASE SE-161 Languedoc The SE-060 has now been cast. Like the Stratoliner, it is cast in resin with white metal parts and rubber mainwheel tyres. Test castings have been received, we are hoping to receive castings from the beginning of August. The Languedoc will be available in the following versions: 1. Gnome & Rhône engines with large or small fin and rudder assembly 2. Pratt & Whitney engines with the large fin and rudder assembly 3. Gnome and Rhône engines with four bladed props and launching cradle for the Leduc experimental ramjet aircraft Decal / transfer options include: 1. Air France F-BCUS 2. LOT Polish Airlines SP-LDA 3. Test aircraft F-ZLAV with Leduc The price of the AF and LOT aircraft will be GBP each. The price of the Test aircraft together with the Leduc will be GBP Please contact Chris or myself for further details. Best wishes, Wojtek w.benzinski@zen.co.uk

Other news of models. We have heard of a Short Sperrin being prepared and have seen shots of the master but have not heard about availability. I was delighted to hear from Andrew Selbie in Canada that he is bringing out a Short Sarafand very shortly and is considering other flying boats such as the Knuckleduster. I am hoping to have one at the October meeting for people to see. If you want to contact Andrew, go to andrew@mimodels.com. Andrew would be very glad to hear from anyone with HBM flying boat models to sell. If you are not familiar with the Sarafand Andrew has supplied the following information. The Short S.14 Sarafand was a British biplane flying boat first proposed in 1928 as an enlarged development of the Singapore II. It was designed to provide transatlantic range capability. When it was built in 1932 it was the largest airplane in the United Kingdom with a wingspan of 120 feet. Power was provided by six 825 h.p. Rolls-Royce Buzzard II engines in tandem tractor/pusher pairs, housed in monocoque nacelles mounted between the wings on integral girders. The hull, largely constructed of anodized Alclad, had a stainless-steel planing bottom. It was fitted with a monoplane tail unit with one large fin and two small auxiliary fins on the tailplane. With a full fuel load of 3,384 gallons and an all up weight of 70,000 pounds, the Sarafand had a range of 1,450 miles, a maximum speed of 150 m.p.h. and was operated by a crew of 10. A central companionway gave access to all cabins and equipment in the hull, which included stations for each of the navigator, wireless operator and flight engineer. There was room for 10 bunk beds, and storage for a complete spare engine and two replacement propeller blades. There was even a heated cupboard for drying wet clothes. Only one S.14 was built (serial S1589) and it was later used for

experimental flying at the Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment at Felixstowe. Although not put into production, the Sarafand provided Short Bros. with the experience, confidence and much technical data to proceed with further large and complex projects. After a somewhat brief but trouble free life, it was scrapped at Felixstowe in 1936.

Those of you who display your models as dioramas will be interested in the following. Noy s Miniatures have been making military bases for some time and have now produced some civil bases. If you are interested contact them on noypines@netvision.net.il or google Noy s Miniatures. Each sheet is $7 plus postage with a minimum order of two sheets. Wayne Moyer sent the following request. Please help if you can. One of the last things that Derek did was to help Wayne fill some other slots in the collection. Thanks Chris. Is it possible to include this? I'm building a collection of 1/200 scale models of airplanes my cousin flew during a 32-year USAF career and need only an F-86D model. Anyone have one to sell or trade? Wayne Moyer wmoyer@woh.rr.com

For TOTS July, 2017 From Ron Crawford Vale Derek Barratt. Another of the stalwarts of our hobby and a great friend to me has passed away whilst on holiday in France. Derek Barratt was one of the original members of the Norfolk Group and the creator of the Speed in the Air, Golden Age, and American Air Power ranges of finished 1/200 model aircraft. He was also a demon collector of Dinky and other ranges, a motorsports enthusiast, and an authority on the many low volume producers in the UK. We corresponded for something over 30 years and made a point of meeting whenever I was in the UK. We will miss his wit, wisdom and encouragement as much as his productions. Full Circle Department. It seems as though I have come full circle in the world of 1:200 models. Until the late 1960 s I was fundamentally a collector of US ID models. I scratch-built some models and constructed others from kits, but fundamentally I was fascinated by the official models the armed forces had used for recognition and gunnery training, sand table exercises, and other purposes during WWII. Those models, in liberated and later war surplus examples, were part of my childhood as an army brat but continued relevant with their reincarnations during what we knew as the Cold War. I was introduced to 1:200 scale by Bob Thompson, Jim Dorst, George Blezinger, Don Kenske, CA Thompson, and other American ID model collectors. Among US collectors the core interest was the 1/72 and 1/432 scale aircraft, 1/500 and 1/1200 scale ships, and 1/108 scale AFV s supplied to American fighting units. Enough 1/200 models kept turning up, however, to make those at least a side interest among ID collectors. Our TOTS scale made sense for many reasons. One could find planes, trains, ships, AFV s, and even figures in a common scale. It was an ideal table top and sand table scale in which one could visualize, game, or reenact events in a realistic space. And when we started the costs were an unbeatable bargain. Best of all, many of the 1/200 models we were finding were legitimate war relics from the US, British Commonwealth, German, and Swedish forces. By the late 1970 s collectors had pretty well exhausted the supplies of official models. The hobby, however, burgeoned over the next 2-3 decades. Low volume ranges serving the modelers, militaria buffs, wargamers, collectors, model railroaders,( and more official customers than will ever be revealed) created what may well have been a true Golden Age. Collections of thousands of aircraft, hundreds of AFV s, and literal armies of soldiers became possible. Our HBM by itself made 950 different 1/200 models. The Golden Age continued into the new millennium. The 1990 s witnessed another evolution. Centered on 1/200 airliners, firms like Herpa, Hogan, and Gulliver brought forth ranges which we truthfully thought would replace us. The design, features, and workmanship were phenomenal, making use of the latest and most accurate machining, engraving, diecasting, and tampon printing technologies. A Break in the Action. At least 5 years ago, perhaps as much a decade, we noticed a very unsubtle change in the incoming and outbound packages and correspondence. It was my dear wife who first recognized the pattern. (Louise maintains a vigilant defensive posture that helps ensure our home is not inundated by 1/200 objects which are not clearly essential, and protects us against the dreaded menace of Other Scales.) The number of s and letters exchanged with other devotees of The One True Scale dropped dramatically. In parallel the number of models bought, sold, and swapped slowed to a trickle. There are lots of explanations for the slowdown... We as producers are doubtless major contributors. We may have done our job all too well over the years, supplying more models than most people can identify, let alone finish, display, or justify to significant others. And these days we may not be churning out the volume of exciting, popular choices to stimulate broad demand. On those rare days when I am completely honest with myself, I have to admit that not everyone shares my enthusiasm for American bomber projects of the 1930 s, or super-heavy tank designs of WWII. Another clear issue is the aging model hobbyist population. Industry-wide, the people who collect and build models of planes, trains, ships, and most other subjects came of age more or less together as a bubble in the population. They (ourselves excepted, of course) are now reaching their golden years, when health, finances, downsizing, caregiving/-receiving, and competing demands vie with dreams. Another piece of the puzzle is the near absence of a younger, follow-on generation of people who like making or collecting models. Our grandchildrens generation appreciates to a degree the concentration and skill it took Grandfather to finish a model. They simply cannot imagine spending that amount of time or study on the task. And the social component of modeling and collecting is alien and imcomprehensible to a generation isolated by social media.

Much the same can be said for the economics of the hobby. As a producer I can readily understand the costs which other producers are incurring. Volumes have to be up in the thousand range before makers can be accused of anything beyond selfexpoitation. I look at costs in terms of what it would cost a new collector to build a truly representative, world-class collection. In about 1972 I purchased the core of my Wiking aircraft collection for approximately $400. Take a look at Carsten Saure s Wiking Handbook, which reflects recent auction prices. The cost today would be staggering. Our view of the future of the hobby is chaotic. What approach will ultimately prevail and perhaps dominate? Will it be the hand-crafted masterpieces? The less costly resin models that we paint ourselves? The exquisite but ultimately repetitive diecast clones? The emerging and potentially disruptive technical tours de force that 3D printing will ultimately enable? Or will it be virtual collecting of 3D digital representations that we can ultimately scale as we choose, finish in a broad ranges of liveries, and print when we choose. All I can infer is that a situation that is unreadable is an excellent time to take time out and take stock. Then do what works for you. My own solutions look like these. Go with what is working. This year to date I have found several long sought 1/200 Wiking aircraft and a flock (well maybe just a gaggle) of Pilot and Wiking military and traffic models. I have no idea why these models are surfacing now, after years of drought. They are opportunities that may not arise again in my lifetime. Enjoy what you have. One rainy night whilst co- imbibing Port in Berlin, Friedrich Peltzer handed me a pearl of wisdom. Collecting can become almost an illness. Many people seem to hoard lust or desire more than they experience pleasure. The evidence for that is in what they do when they find a treasure. They lock them up in boxes and cases in basements, attics, and closets, and then go look for more. Mr. Peltzer argued for the opposite approach. He advocated physically playing with models, much as we do when we demonstrate air combat maneuver, teach gunnery or recognition, or run sand table exercises. He recognized, however, that many of us suffer from issues like incipient maturity, and become quite self-conscious when running about making motor or cannon noises. In such pitiable cases he proposed that imagination could offer some benefit. Even grownups should be able to enjoy picturing themselves flying those aircraft on missions, encountering them on ops, and seeing them in action. The key, of course, was keeping your toys where you could see them, handle them, and otherwise enjoy them. And show them off. I have probably covered as many walls of our home with display cases as domestic tranquility will allow. However, my current project is reworking sets of flat files as model archives. Take a look on ebay for flat file cabinets. Those are metal file cabinets configured to hold maps, blueprints, and other very large documents. The ones I am refitting have drawers 44 inches wide by 33 inches deep by 2.5 inches high. They will hold incredible numbers of 1/200 scale models in a secure, easily accessible format that veritably begs for attention. Make what you really want. We learned this lesson as small children during WWII. Manufactured toys were really scarce, and many dads (including mine) were off on one or another of Uncle Sam s all-expenses-paid world tours. What we did have, however, were grandfathers and neighbors who were not above gifting us with jack knives, sandpaper, and blocks of pine, basswood, or balsa. The same lesson was applied again when we started HBM Models. No one was going to make the models we wanted, so we made our own. The idea still applies. A side benefit is that if no one else wants them, I am still happy albeit impoverished. 32 AND FINALLY AND PLEASE DO READ THIS Some time ago the UK Post Office had a slogan Use it or Lose it. We are in this position now. Those of us producing models are very happy to do so but need to sell them to be able to continue. I have not broken even with a model for a long time and am many thousands of pounds down in costs. The latest models have been the worst of all although they are of the highest quality. Break even comes after 40 sales and the B17s have averaged 4 each. There is now another problem rearing its head, with Paul at Helmet being the worst hit, and that is unreasonable behaviour by customers - not usually TOTS readers. Because Paul has a very good website they assume he is like Amazon and models are instantly available. One UK customer rang him at 10.30pm on a Sunday and demanded a model to be ordered and to be delivered the following day. Another US customer ordered a model on a Sunday and when he had not received it by the following Wednesday he put in a complaint to paypal that locked the Helmet account and called Paul a thief on several forums. Losing money is one thing, paying to be abused is another. Paul s website comes up for renewal at the end of August, the cost has gone up considerably. Paul will not renew the contract so the site will go. Wojtek, Paul and I are discussing the way forward. Many TOTS readers I regard as friends and I am very grateful for all the support I received in when in a three year period my wife died three weeks before our 40th wedding anniversary, I went on to dialysis and then had a transplant. Mind you, there was one (now

former) reader who wrote to demand an explanation for the delay in delivery of his free newsletter. He never bought models but considered he had a right to regular newsletters. I explained the situation. His reply was to demand to know when he would get a TOTS. He got no reply and was removed from the list. We are mostly people whose three score and ten years guarantee has run out or will do so soon. We have a catalogue of health and family problems to juggle between us and do our best but 1/200 is a hobby, not a life. Derek calculated before he died that he had produced 2003 finished models. He was meticulous in recording costs and I asked him how much he was paying himself to make and paint all these superb models. He said it was less than 2 an hour. We are very keen to continue to serve the 1/200 community. I have all the biplane masters and all Derek s masters but can only produce them if there is a market. Sorry to end on this depressing message but we cannot pretend it is otherwise. I hope to see many of you in October at Coventry. Happy modelling Chris
