2 smart times contest Information and general terms & conditions. 1. General terms and intentions of the smart times contest. The smart times contest is a competition where a smart car s distinctive qualities and special features are judged in numerous categories. Please note: each car can only be evaluated in one of the categories! The only exception is the beat the JBL smart competition. The winner (first place) of a category is not allowed to participate in the same category the following year. 2. Overview of categories and participants. 1. tuning & performance regular category (max. 30 smart) modified category (max. 10 smart) 2. design & aesthetics (max. 40 smart) 3. in-car media & SPL (max. 40 smart) 4. craziest smart (max. 40 smart) 5. beat the JBL smart (max. 5 smart) 3. Jury and assessment criteria. The respective categories will be judged by independent judges from the European Mobile Media Association (EMMA) as well as by the smart community and a special smart jury. The judges are excluded from participating in the smart contest. You can find the assessment details in the descriptions of each category of the smart times contest. The categories 1. tuning & performance, 2. design & aesthetics, 3. in-car media and SPL and 5. beat the JBL smart are judged exclusively by independent judges from the European Mobile Media Association (EMMA). Category 4. craziest smart is judged by the smart community and a special smart jury. 4. Participation. In general, all smart with a valid road approval are eligible to take part in the smart times contest. The organizers reserve the right to exclude individual cars from the competition. Only modifications which are registered in the car documents will be judged (except craziest smart ). Winners of a category of the smart times contest 2015 are not allowed to participate in the same category at smart times contest Each participant must be fit to drive and must possess a valid driver s license during the judging, as well as during the award ceremony. 2

3 5. Registration. The registration can be done on site directly in the smart times contest area or via the address The number of participants is limited. First come, first serve. We kindly ask you to inform us if you want to withdraw your registration from the contest. This will enable us to allocate vacant places to others. Please note that you can only register for one category. The only exception is the beat the JBL smart competition. Here everybody can register, despite registrations in other categories. 6. Awards. Each participant in the smart times contest will receive a certificate, which will be handed out directly after the award ceremony at the check in. The top three participants in the categories tuning & performance (incl. subcategories), design & aesthetics, in-car media & SPL & craziest smart and the winner of the category beat the JBL smart will receive a trophy. The trophies will be presented during the award ceremony which will take place on Saturday, 27th August 2016, at 4.45 p.m. on stage. Please note: the award ceremony for the category craziest smart will take place on Saturday, 27th August 2016, at 1.30 p.m. on stage. The award ceremony for the category beat the JBL smart will take place on Saturday, 27th August 2016 at 4.45 p.m. on stage. 7. Running order of the contest. The check-in for the smart times contest is located in the contest area. At the contest check-in, a time for the judging will be fixed and the parking cards will be distributed. Appointments can be arranged on Friday only. Non-attendance leads to a cancellation of the registration. There is no entitlement to an alternative appointment. We recommend being on site 10 minutes before the appointed time. The jury will determine the winners of each category after assessing all vehicles. The winners will be informed on Saturday, 27th August 2016, between a.m. and noon by telephone. Therefore each participant must provide a valid cell phone number at the smart times contest area and be contactable within the stated timeframe. The award ceremony will take place on Saturday, 27th August 2016 at 4.45 p.m. on stage, whereby the award ceremony for the category craziest smart will take place at 1.15 p.m. on stage and the award ceremony for the category beat the JBL smart will take place at 4.45 p.m. on stage. 3

4 8. Judging place and time. Depending on the categories of the smart times contest judging will take place at the contest area, on stage or in front of the stage. For the categories tuning & performance, design & aesthetics and in-car media & SPL the vehicles will be judged directly at the smart times contest area at the following time: Friday 26 th August 2016, a.m p.m. The category craziest smart will be judged in front of the stage at the following time: Saturday 27 th August 2016, a.m p.m. The category beat the JBL smart contest will be judged on stage. Meeting point for these categories is behind the stage. Be aware that the teams and participants must be present during the entire contest. Saturday, 27 th August 2016, 4.30 p.m p.m. 9. Personal release of use of images. Each participant in the smart times contest grants free of charge and irrevocably to the organizer, in accordance with current stipulations on the subject of transferring images, full rights with regard to using pictures of themselves for internal and external purposes. 4

5 >> competition classes and assessment. 1. tuning & performance (0 50 points). The competition category tuning & performance consists of two subcategories the regular category for smart with a regular appearance and the modified category for those with an extremely altered look. Further information can be found in part 1.7. general information. In these categories the overall performance of the vehicles is judged. These categories sub-areas are braking system, suspension, exhaust system, air intake system, increased output, engine tuning, drive train, wheels, tires, skill and dexterity braking system (0-4 points). Assessment of modifications to the braking system, brake discs and brake pistons. Each of the following modifications will score 1 point: Modified brake pads Steel-wrapped hoses Modified brake discs 0 points = original condition 1 point = modified discs or pads or hoses 2 points = modified discs and pads or modified pads and hoses 3 points = complete systems with discs, pistons and pads 4 points = as above plus modified brake hoses 1.2. suspension (0-3 points). Assessment of the modifications to the suspension, springs and shock absorbers. Each of the following modifications will score 1 point: Modified springs Modified shock absorbers Modified front suspension brace/wishbone/mounts 0 points = original condition 1 point = modified springs or front suspension brace 2 points = complete systems with springs and shock absorbers 3 points = as above plus modified front suspension brace/wishbone/mounts (everything over and above simply modifying the suspension) 5

6 1.3. exhaust system and air intake system (0-3 points). Assessment of the modifications to the exhaust system, air intake system, air filter, rear silencer, catalytic converter and air ducting. Each of the following modifications will score one point: Modified air filter Modified rear silencer Modified catalytic converter Modified air ducting to the air filter 0 points = original condition 1 point = modified air filter or rear silencer 2 points = modified air filter and rear silencer or rear silencer and catalytic converter 3 points = complete exhaust system or as above plus modified hoses or modified air ducting to the air filter 1.4. increased output, engine tuning and drive train (0-5 points). Assessment of the modifications to increase the engine output on the drive train, transmission and differential. Please note: only those modifications entered in the vehicle documents will be appraised. 2 points = chip tuning 3 points = modifications to charge air cooler 4 points = nitrous oxide/alcohol and water injection 5 points = mechanical tuning such as a larger turbo, transmission or drive tuning 1.5. wheels and tires (0-5 points). Assessment of the modifications to wheels and tires. Points are awarded for modified wheel sizes, rims (alloy rims), tires, wheel arches (to fit larger wheels) etc. Each of the following modifications scores one point: Aluminum rims instead of steel rims Modified rim size (also smaller, but only if this can be justified) Painted/chrome-plated rims Modified wheel arches to fit larger wheels Special rims (custom-built parts or very special e.g. with leather trim) 0 points = original steel rims 1 point = original aluminum rims or painted original steel rims 2 points = modified aluminum rims or modified original aluminum rims 3 points = painted rims and different rim size 4 points = chrome-plated special designs and different size 5 points = as above plus modified wheel arches 6

7 1.6. skill/dexterity (0-30 points). Skill/dexterity describes the amount of work and the execution of the modifications on the vehicle. The additional modifications must not affect the safety of the vehicle. The judges assess the quality of all interior and exterior vehicle modifications. Things appraised in this category include: All additional modifications to the vehicle exterior (spoiler, tinted foils, paintwork etc.) All modifications in the engine compartment (covers, hoses, cables etc.) All modifications to the passenger compartment and luggage compartment (in-car media system, amplifier, control unit, loudspeakers, seats, special seat belts, stitching, leather, covers etc.) 10 points = excellent 4 points = average 8 points = very good 2 points = poor 6 points = good 0 points = nothing to judge 1.7. general information. Due to the many modifications we ve seen over the last years and for reasons of fairness, we came up with the decision to split this one category into two - one contest for smarts with a regular appearance and one for those with an extremely modified appearance. Regular Category: This category is for all smart, which just enhanced and improved the performance of their car as described above. E.g.: Chip-tuning, improved Suspension, crazy colors, spoiler, etc. Modified Category: This category is for all smart, which do not fit in the typical image of a smart. Cars with a different engine or with different wheel suspensions and huge tires are just perfect for this modified category. E.g.: smart, which are modified to Monstertrucks or Go-Carts and only have the autobody of a smart won t be able to join the regular competition. They will compete in this category. All competitors will be examined by the jury, which will decide in which of the two categories they can participate. In case of doubt the headjudge will make a decision. Even though we are looking forward to see all kinds of modifications, it is an absolute obligation for all participants in these categories to still compete with a smart, which has an official approval for roadworthiness and additionally meets the described terms and conditions. 7

8 2. design & aesthetics (0-80 points). The entire vehicle is judged on the effort put into creating something unique. The assessment criteria are general aesthetics, integration of the components in the surroundings, vehicle exterior, passenger compartment and luggage compartment. The exterior of the vehicle must be clean. The engine compartment, passenger compartment and luggage compartment must also be clean. 1 point will be deducted for every vehicle part that is not clean (maximum deduction = 3 points) overall vehicle impression (0-20 points). Here, the judges mainly assess the exterior design and the effort put into creating a unique vehicle. The uniqueness and harmony of the modifications with engine compartment, interior and luggage compartment are appraised. The entire vehicle should have a consistent and recurrent theme in order to achieve the highest score passenger compartment (0-10 points). The judges assess the appearance and the general impression of the passenger compartment. The passenger compartment must convey a complete overall impression with perfectly integrated components, regardless of whether they are subtle or showy luggage compartment (0-10 points). Bonus points can only be awarded if the participant draws the judges attention to the features in question. Among other things bonus points can be awarded for the following modifications: Leather work on the vehicle exterior Engine swap AND mechanical tuning (e.g. from another model/manufacturer) Ghost airbrushing Special design elements Special presentations etc skill/dexterity (0-30 points). Skill and dexterity describes the work involved and the execution of the vehicle modifications. The additional modifications must not affect the safety of the vehicle. The judges assess the quality of all modifications to the vehicle s interior and exterior. Things appraised in this category include: All additional modifications to the vehicle s exterior (spoiler, tinted foils, paintwork etc.) All modifications to the engine compartment (covers, hoses, cables etc.) All modifications to the passenger compartment and luggage compartment (in-car media system, amplifier, control unit, loudspeakers, seats, special seat belts, stitching, leather, covers etc.) 8

9 2.6. general information. We would love to see the most awesome and most individual smart in the world, but in order to be fair to other participants it is necessary to set the accentuation on smart. The competing cars are supposed to be modified smart and shouldn t be anything else. 3. in-car media & SPL (0 55 points). In this class both the quality and the scope of the in-car media components and the performance of the whole system are judged. The quality of the components installed and their integration in the vehicle as a whole are further important assessment criteria skill/dexterity (0-10 points). Skill and dexterity describe the work involved and the execution of the in-car media components installed in the vehicle. The additional modifications must not affect the safety of the vehicle. The judges assess the quality of all in-car media components fitted in the vehicle. Things judged in this category include: Car media systems Amplifiers Speakers Covers etc safety of components and parts that have been fitted and modified (0-5 points). The judges check that the wiring and fuses of the car media system comply with the official regulations of the European mobile media association (EMMA). Any installation presenting a safety risk in this category will be penalized with deduction of points. One point will be deducted for each instance of deviation such as incorrect fuse ratings sound pressure level (SPL) measurement (0-40 points). The SPL measurement is assessed by a certified EMMA judge. The sound pressure level is determined based on the official EMMA regulations ( EMMA Sound Pressure League [ESPL] regulations ). The microphone is positioned in accordance with the official EMMA ESPL regulations; however, the SPL will only be measured once and with the doors open. In certain conditions (e.g. in the event of extremely strong wind, etc.) it may be necessary to perform the measurement with only one door open or with both doors closed. Points for ESPL are awarded according to the following principle: 100dB = 0 points; each additional db = 1 point; e.g dB = 36 points. (rounded down from 0.4, rounded up from 0.5). The midrange and high frequencies must always be clearly audible during the SPL measurement. The highest possible score is 40 points, i.e. 140dB. 9

10 4. Beat the JBL smart. This brand new category is all about sound and volume. The world famous producer of audio systems JBL and smart worked together to create a unique product - the JBL smart. During smart times 16, this special car will be looking for competitors in terms of volume output and loudness Participants & Rules. Everyone who believes, that his/her smart is loud enough to pose a challenge to the JBL smart can participate. The motto is: first come, first serve. We have only five places left you better be quick and register via info@smarttimes16.com or at the smart times contest area. It is also allowed to participate, if you are a contestant in another category. All installed speakers, woofers, amplifiers and other electronic devices have to be fixed permanently to the car. For instance, it is not allowed to place additional speakers on the roof during the judgement. Each car has 30 seconds to play music and to impress the audience with it. The played music will be provided by the organizing committee on sight Life performance & judgement. The contest will take place on Saturday 27th of August at 4.30 p.m p.m. on stage. The procedure will be as following: the JBL smart will come on the stage and set the bar as high as possible for the competitors. All contenders will follow and try to show what they ve got. The decibel measurement will be undertaken on the co-passenger s seat while all doors of the car are open. The winner will be the one, who is able to beat the JBL smart by scoring more decibels. In the case that more cars can beat the JBL smart, the loudest will be crowned champion. 5. craziest smart. Creativity, wackiness and innovativeness are judged in the category craziest smart. All types of material may be used in order to create a work of art. The visual effect and fun factor are the focus in this category. Matching clothes for driver and co-driver can be an advantage. Let your imagination run wild and delight the whole community with your fancy creations. Despite all creativity, the roadworthiness of your smart must not suffer as we still want to see your masterpiece at the parade! There are no restrictions concerning the use of material. But please do not use any living beings for decoration against their will. 10

11 5.1 Assessment. The cars will be judged in terms of their wackiness, creativity and innovativeness by both the smart community (50 percent) and a special jury (50 percent). The smart community can vote between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., the jury will vote between 12 noon and noon. Each parade participant receives a voting card at the entrance to the parade area. This card enables them to vote for their favorite contestant. The person with the highest number of votes received from the smart community and the special smart jury will be crowned the winner of the craziest smart category.
