1 Working together with people and communities Honda Motor Workers Union Over 40,000 members strong, the Honda Motor Workers Union marked its 40th anniversary in 1992 by establishing a social contribution fund to strengthen its community service efforts. Honda Repeat Hotline Wheelchair Refitting Volunteers With nine regional branches throughout Japan, the Honda Motor Workers Union is involved in volunteer activities rooted in its local communities. The Honda Repeat Hotline provides members from across the country an easy and convenient way to participate in an activity that is implemented by all of the union s branches. The impetus for the hotline was participation in a wheelchair marathon in 1993, where the idea arose of fitting the wheelchairs with a car seat to make them more comfortable to ride. In FY2006, 1,607 union members volunteered their services, refitting 128 wheelchairs and bringing the total to 1,600 wheelchairs refitted since FY Achievements Wheelchairs refitted Volunteers 1,698 1,607 Refitting wheelchairs Wheelchair Marathon Volunteers Since 1993, members of the Honda Motor Workers Union have been quietly working behind the scenes, volunteering to help organize and promote the Oita International Wheelchair Marathon. The event has been attracting everincreasing numbers of participants each year, and has become a very popular form of community service among the members of the union. Starting in 1998, efforts were expanded to include other wheelchair marathons. In FY2006, 20 union volunteers participated in the Tokyo City Road Race, ten in the Oita International Wheelchair Marathon, and nine in the Nagoya City Handi-Marathon. To date, 388 members have volunteered their services. Wheelchair marathon Social Contribution Fund Emergency Relief and Fundraising Drive The Social Contribution Fund disburses funds for various large-scale disaster relief efforts. During FY2006 it delivered emergency funds for the Indian Ocean earthquake, the South Asia earthquake and Typhoon #14.
