Instrument Instructions The pyrometer instrument should be mounted securely to minimize vibration, flexible brackets are not advised. Locate in best viewing position. 26 K Hewitt Pyrometers HI Thermocouple Installation: Various threaded mounting adapters are available, i.e. 1/8 NPT/1/4 NPT/3/8 NPT and 1/2 NPT. If not specified, 1/4 NPT will be supplied. Location will vary depending on application and engine. On turbo charged engines, when possible thermocouple should be installed in the manifold before the turbocharger. This will give the highest temperature indication and the best response time. Hewitt thermocouples are designed to tolerate this location safely and carry a lifetime warranty. If mounting pre-turbo is not possible a lower temperature of F will result when mounting after the turbo. For non-turbo engines, thermocouple may be installed in the manifold before or just after the exhaust pipe flange, as is convenient. Connecting terminals have staggered lengths to insure correct polarity, plus color match to extension wire. A plastic heat shrinkable tube is supplied with the thermocouple and should be slid over the terminals after connection is made with the extension wire and shrunk in place with heat for insulation purpose. Extension Wire: Standard available lengths are 7 ft. minimum, 12 ft. and 14 ft. maximum. If longer length is required, 2 conductor 18 gauge may be added between extension wire and instrument. Also, available color coded from Hewitt. When installing the extension wire, care should be taken to stay clear of exhaust system and chafing areas, secure with the tie wraps, etc. to eliminate wire movement. Terminal connections to pyrometer are designed to insure correct polarity. Pyrometers Standard Hewitt Pyrometers are designed for K-Type Thermocouples - Pyrometer accuracy +/- 2% at full scale. No external power required except for illumination. Housings are made of rugged, high impact glass fiber - ABS. Bezel styles are available in bright stainless steel or matte black anodized aluminum. Red pointer with white characters on black dial are standard for easy reference. Bracket and light kits are included. 31 Boat Lever Co. - Insta-Trim Trim Tabs K How Insta-Trim Boat Levelers Work Insta-Trim Boat Leveler tabs are two stainless steel planes installed on the transom. As the hydraulic cylinders deflect the trim tabs, water flow is redirected. This water flow creates upward pressure under the trim tabs, raising the stern. As the stern rises the bow lowers (figure 1). Because proper trim tab surface area is essential, larger and/ or slower boats require larger trim tabs than smaller faster boats. Insta-Trim Boat Leveler Tabs employ the force of hydraulics for smooth trimming action. When the trim tab rocker switch is pressed, electrical current is sent to the hydraulic motor pump unit. This signal activates the electic motor, creating fluid pressure. Valves on motor pump unit open, channeling the required amount of fluid to the actuators. When the trim tab rocker switch is released, the valve close, capturing the fluid in the actuators hydraulic cylinders. Thus trim tabs hold their position. Insta-Trim Boat Leveler Tabs operate in reverse of what you might think. The port trim tab lifts the port stern which lowers the starboard bow. With properly installed trim tabs, you will not be as aware of this reverse function as the control function is based on the direction you wish to move the bow (figure 2). We recommend Electronic controls for most three station systems. SIZE OF VESSEL Push-Pull is a mechanically connected system. It uses cables to connect control heads to the clutch and throttle. If the total length of cable is less than 50 feet (15 meters), push-pull can work for you. If the cables need to have many bends, or the connection length is more than 50 feet, Electronic controls would be the best choice. That depends largely on how easy it is to operate the clutch and engine interfaces. Some are very stiff and need a powered actuator. There are vessels with 80 feet of push-pull cable that work well. If you need more than 50 feet for a push-pull system, please contact us. We would need to evaluate your requirements. Please tell us: - the number of cable bends, - the cable length, and - the number of stations. We will give you our recommendation for a good working control system. Tech Tip: For 2 station systems, the cable length is considered to be the total length for both stations. For example, a 20 foot cable to one station, plus a 30 foot run for the other station, is a total of 50 feet. If you are using more than 30 feet of cable, you should use the 40 series cable. It will last longer and run smoother. WHAT IS YOUR PREFERENCE? This is called Single Lever control: From the neutral position, push forward to engage the clutch and then push further for forward speed. 36 K Separate Handles - One Clutch/One Throttle EVERY CONTROL HAS VERY FLEXIBLE ORDERING OPTIONS. ONE ENGINE Order one 2009-AK. The 2009 is our most popular push-pull control head. The control shown on the left is the AK version. The A means that the control comes with one long handle for clutch, and one short handle for throttle. The clutch handle has an adjustable neutral detent. A detent gives you a click so you know where neutral is (without looking at the control). The throttle handle has an adjustable friction so you can get the right feel for your control. K is for a chrome finish. There are many other options available to you. Options are explained on the individual product pages AK TWO ENGINES Order two 2009-AK or if you want both clutch handles on the same control head, order: One 2009-BK Controls Two Clutches, and One 2009-FK Controls Two Throttles. The BK has two long handles, each with an adjustable neutral detent. The FK has two short handles with adjustable frictions.
