Many of these engines used in T1000s, Tacomas and 4Runners are experiencing premature head gasket failure. Fel-Pro gasket engineers learned that the original head gasket material could not withstand the heat cycle expansion and contraction occurring in these engines. At high temperatures, the manufacturer says, the fluid has a higher viscosity than ordinary DOT 3 brake fluid and a lower viscosity at low temperatures. Radiator Specialty Company Circle No. 170 Compressor Clutch Saver Switch An on-off switch on the high-side service port between the compressor and condenser of a vehicle s air conditioner system, this device can protect the compressor clutch from overloading and burning out. At 395 psi, the switch opens the circuit and releases the clutch and then closes to resume A/C when the pressure falls to 305 psi. Installation of this switch is a good precaution, its manufacturer says, after replacing a compressor clutch on any vehicles with patterns of such failures from excessive head pressures, such as Chrysler minivans or Mercedes with Nippondenso compressors. Circle No. 171 Remanufactured Engine Control Modules Known pattern failures allow the ECM remanufacturer to restore a control unit to OEM performance but to exceed the original durability standards. TOMCO says they disassemble each unit and replace components without using reflow soldering, which can compromise other joints. Instead the critical areas alone are resoldered. Following the reassembly, each unit is 100 percent load-tested for all inputs and outputs, and temperature as well as vibration stresses are imposed before the unit is passed. The remanufacturer carries ECM s for both import and domestic vehicles. TOMCO, Inc. With the four-ground electrode design, the spark finds the most efficient path from the platinum center electrode, ensuring the least electrical resistance. The resulting spark lasts longer, is more effective and more powerful than that of a conventional single ground electrode. This translates into optimal access to the air/fuel mixture, producing superior burn characteristics and peak engine performance over a longer plug life, says the manufacturer. During production, the platinum center electrode is heat-fused into an extended ceramic insulator, a process that is exclusive to Bosch.
