2 HALL FLOWMETER The Hall Flowmeter is a modified pitot tube which averages the the velocity of flow across the diameter of the pipe carrying the water. That means only one reading is required to provide an accurate measurement. The pitot tube is attached to an inverted U-tube water manometer. The manometer scale is calibrated to give a differential reading between the Static Pressure of the pipe, and the Flow or Velocity Pressure. This reading indicates the amount of water passing through the pipe in Gallons Per Minute (GPM), per square inch of cross-sectional area, as measured along the inside diameter. The Hall Flowmeter has been rigorously tested for accuracy at several hydraulics testing laboratories, at major universities in California. It is a practical, easy-touse instrument to measure flow velocities. It is used in conjunction with power measurements taken from the pump drive motors, to calculate over-all plant efficiency. The instrument can be inserted through a corporation stop cock, without shutting down the pump and disturbing the water supply

4 COLLINS-STYLE PITOT TUBE The Collins-Style tube is a single point pitot tube that is inserted into the pipe through two 1/4" NPT drilled and tapped holes. Measurements are usually taken at two, six or ten points across the inside diameter of the pipe, and averaged to get the full flow of the water. Manometer readings are easily translated into gallons per minute using multipliers found in the users instructions. The instrument is fabricated from sturdy stainless steel, brass and copper materials for years of reliable service.

7 COLLINS-STYLE OVERHUNG TUBE (Also called a Prandtl Tube) The Collins-Style Overhung tube is used in cases where the Collins-Style (throughpipe) tube is impractical, as when two drilled holes in the pipe are not possible, or when the water velocities are very high. As with the Collins Tube, measurements are usually taken at two, six or ten points across the pipe inside diameter, and averaged to get the full flow of the water. The readings from the water manometer can easily be converted to gallons per minute. The Overhung tube is constructed of sturdy stainless steel, brass and copper materials for years of reliable service.

9 C. W. Cox Inverted U-Tube Manometer C. W. Cox manufactures several water manometers to compliment our line of flowmeters. The manometers attach to hoses from instruments, through the valves at the bottom, and provide a differential pressure reading which is then translated into a flow rate in gallons per minute. The Hall Tube manometer is 36" in length and is calibrated specifically for that instrument. This scale reads in Gallons Per Minute / Square Inch of Inside Diameter. The Collins Tube manometer is 48" long, is calibrated for that instrument, and is scaled in Feet/Second. In addition, there is a 60" manometer that is usually scaled in th inches and 10 inches, but can also come with either the Hall or Collins scale in the same scale. The valves at the bottom will allow water to be bled from the manometer, or let air bleed from the hoses. The valve at the top will also bleed water from the manometer. The Schraeder valve at the top allows air to be pumped into the manometer. All manometer scales can be used with the velocity-to-quantity slide rules which come with the Hall and Collins pitot tubes. All manometers are built of sturdy aluminum and brass materials for high corrosion resistance and long life. Upgraded high quality valves, (shown) have o-ring seals and directional handles.

11 COX DRILL and TAP ADAPTORS DRILL ADAPTOR TAP ADAPTOR Cox Drill and Tap Assemblies come with adaptors for both the Drill and the Tap. Each adaptor is made of wrought steel and the finest high speed drills and taps for durability and years of reliable service. When using the Drill and Tap Adaptors, there are two operations. First the Drill Adaptor is used to core a hole in the pipe. The Tap Adaptor is then placed in the assembly and the hole is tapped. Drill and Tap Adaptors come in 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" and 1" NPT sizes.

13 INSTALLATION AND OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS Drill & tap a 1/2" NPT hole in the wall of the pipe. The pipe may be at any angle, but the installation point must be such that the plastic manometer stands vertically. For best results, the instrument should be located approximately 10 pipe diameters (or more) downstream of any valves, bends, ells, etc., and should have 3 or 4 pipe diameters of straight pipe downstream of the instrument. Screw the gage into the tapped hole with a wrench on the brass nut on the packing gland. Do not put a wrench or any strain on the plexiglass. Locate the flow hole so that it sits in the middle of the flow stream. This may be done by extending the instrument all the way across the pipe until it contacts the far side, and then backing it out 1/2 of the pipe inside diameter. Rotate the instrument so that the plastic manometer is vertical and upright, and the engraved face of the plexiglass is parallel to the pipe. Be sure the flow hole faces the oncoming flow. If the instrument is to be mounted in a pressurized line, this may be done through a 3/4" corporation cock, or a full port ball valve. Use whatever fittings are necessary to provide a 1/2" female NPT adaption for the instrument. Fully install the instrument before opening the valve. As soon as the valve is opened, the probe may be inserted into the pipe. The Piro-Velicitygage is susceptible to sediment. If the system has a sediment problem, we suggest running the water for minutes or until the water runs clear. Bleed all air out of the instrument using the top valve. Take all readings from the bottom of the floater/indicator cone. Under no circumstances should the user try to adjust the calibration screw. Any attempt to adjust the calibration screw will void both the accuracy and warranty of the instrument. Also, under no circumstances should the user try to remove the brass probe from the instrument. This will snap the inside brass tube and render the instrument useless.

14 Cox Piro-Swivel Manometer Velocitygage With 360 Swivel Tip This upgrade to our standard PiroVelocitygage allows the manometer to face any direction with respect to the direction of flow in the pipe. The layout is shown at left. At right are the details of the 360 Swivel Tip upgrade. PACKING NUT A First, packing nuts A and B are loosened. Then the impact hole can be rotated to the desired orientation. After the packing nuts are retightened, the instrument can be inserted into the pipe. As always, the manometer must be vertical. 16 INSTALLATION AND OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS TOP MOUNTING IN HORIZONTAL PIPE (Example 1): Drill & tap a 1/2" NPT hole on the top of the pipe. The pipe must be horizontal to receive the instrument, so that the plastic manometer stands vertically. For best results, the instrument should be located approximately 10 pipe diameters (or more) downstream of any valves, bends, ells, etc., and should have 3 or 4 pipe diameters of straight pipe downstream of the instrument. Screw the gage into the tapped hole with a wrench on the brass nut at the bottom of the plastic. Do not put a wrench or any strain on the plexiglass. Rotate the instrument so that the flow arrow points in the direction of flow, and so that the face of the plexiglass is parallel with the pipe. Bleed all air out of the instrument using the top valve. Take all readings from the bottom of the floater/indicator cone. SIDE MOUNTING IN A HORIZONTAL OR VERTICAL PIPE (Examples 2 & 3): Drill & tap a 1/2" NPT hole on the side of the pipe. Loosen the manometer screw and swivel the manometer so that the plastic will stand vertically. Re-tighten the manometer screw until the o-ring seats seal against the plastic. Do not over-tighten. For best results, the instrument should be located approximately 10 pipe diameters (or more) downstream of any valves, bends, ells, etc., and should have 3 or 4 pipe diameters of straight pipe downstream of the instrument. Screw the gage into the tapped hole with a wrench on the brass nut at the bottom of the swivel head. Do not put a wrench or any strain on the plexiglass. The flow hole must face the direction of flow, (must face upstream) and the face of the plexiglass must be orientated vertically upwards. Bleed all air out of the instrument using the top valve. Take all readings from the bottom of the floater/indicator cone. The Short Piro Flowgage is susceptible to sediment. If your application has a sediment problem, we recommend running the water for minutes or until the water runs clear. Under no circumstances should the user try to adjust the calibration screw. Any attempt to adjust the calibration screw will void both the accuracy and warranty of the instrument. Also, under no circumstances should the user try to remove the brass probe from the instrument. This will result in breakage to the inner tube which will render the instrument useless.

When ordering the Top Mounted Flowgage (Part Number CPFGH) please indicate an orientation number along with the pipe size. IF NO ORIENTATION NUMBER IS REQUESTED, THE DEFAULT IS A
