1 Vehicles 8-7 FLC Conventional Introduction Description of Revision: This bulletin replaces the version dated January 00. Contact information has been revised, and warranty information has been updated. When a customer requests a binary switch A/C control system to replace the ACPU control system, use the parts in the Binary Switch Retrofit Kit (see Table ) and follow the instructions below. Binary Switch Retrofit Kit K0 Description Part Number Quantity Binary Switch Fan Cycling Pressure Switch A Cab HVAC Jumper Harness A Binary/Fan Cycling Switch Jumper Harness A Binary Switch Harness A Air Pressure Switch FSC Cable Tie, 6-/ Inches Cable Tie, 8 Inches Cable Tie, -/8 Inches Elbow, /8 FPT x /8 MPT Table, Binary Switch Retrofit Kit K0 Binary Switch Retrofit for Century Class and Argosy Vehicles. Turn off the engine, apply the brakes, and chock the tires.. Disconnect the batteries.. Remove the ACPU control module. On Century Class Conventionals, the ACPU control module is located under the hood on the right-hand side of the frontwall. See Fig.. On Argosy COEs, the ACPU control module is located on the right-hand side of the vehicle behind the bumper. See Fig... Disconnect the high pressure switch harness from the ACPU control module.. Disconnect the low pressure switch harness from the ACPU control module.. Disconnect the ACPU 8-pin connector from the frontwall harness. See Fig. and Fig... Remove the bolts that attach the ACPU control module to the mounting bracket, and remove the ACPU control module.. Install the binary switch.. Remove the ACPU high pressure switch from the discharge line. See Fig. and Fig.. NOTE: The ACPU high pressure switch can be removed without discharging the refrigerant.. Install the binary switch on the discharge line where the ACPU high pressure switch was located. Torque the binary switch 96 to 0 lbf in (085 to 56 N cm).. Use a cable tie to secure the ACPU low pressure switch harness to the suction line., April 00 Page

Attach the fan cycling pressure switch to the receiver-drier. See Fig. and Fig.. 5. On Century Class Conventionals, loosen the nut that attaches the receiver-drier to the mounting bracket so the receiver-drier can be lowered and the port on top of the receiver-drier is accessible. 5. Remove the cap that covers the port on the receiver-drier. 5. Attach the fan cycling pressure switch to the port on the receiver-drier. Torque the pressure switch 96 to 0 lbf in (085 to 56 N cm). 5. On Century Class Conventionals, return the receiver-drier to its original position and tighten the nut that attaches the receiver-drier to the mounting bracket. Make sure there is enough clearance between the bottom of the receiver-drier and the exhaust heat shield. 5.5 On Century Class Conventionals, secure the harness to the receiver-drier using a cable tie to prevent the harness on the fan cycling pressure switch from rubbing on the rain tray. 6. Connect the harnesses. 6. Connect the binary switch harness to the binary switch. Be careful not to bend the terminals on the binary switch. 6. Attach the two one-pin connectors on the binary/fan cycling switch jumper harness to the binary switch harness. 6. Attach the -pin connector on the binary/fan cycling switch jumper harness to the fan cycling pressure switch. 6. Attach the 8-pin connector on the binary/fan cycling switch jumper harness to the 8-pin connector on the frontwall harness. Page, April 00

ACPU High Pressure Switch 6.5 On Century Class Conventionals, route the binary/fan cycling switch jumper harness along the frontwall harness, and secure it to the frontwall harness using cable ties. See Fig On Argosy COEs, route the binary/fan cycling switch jumper harness along the main cab harness and secure it to the main cab harness using cable ties. 6.7 Coil the excess harness and use a cable tie to secure it to the frontwall harness. 7. Install the air pressure switch in the cab. 7. Drain the air tanks. 7. On Century Class Conventionals, slide open the waste bin under the dash. See Fig On Century Class Conventionals, remove the door above the waste bin. For instructions, see Section 60.08, Subject 00 of the Century Class Trucks Workshop Manual. On Argosy COEs, remove the upper dash assembly, the dash cover, and the HVAC cover. See Fig. 7. For instructions, see Section 60.08, Subject 0 of the Century Class Trucks Workshop Manual. 7. Remove the plug from the top row of the air junction block. See Fig Apply Teflon tape or seal to the male threads on the /8 FPT x /8 MPT elbow. Binary/Fan Cycling Switch Jumper Harness. Frontwall Harness Fig. 5, Frontwall Harness, Century Class Conventional 7.6 Apply Teflon tape or seal to the threads on the air pressure switch. Attach the air pressure switch to the elbow. 8. Connect the cab HVAC jumper harness. 8. On Century Class Conventionals, remove the right-hand upper dash panel and the HVAC cover. See Fig. 6. For instructions, see Section 60.08, Subject 00 of the Century Class Trucks Workshop Manual. 8. On Century Class Conventionals, route the cab HVAC jumper harness (the end with the two female terminals) behind the right-hand console cover (see Fig. 6) to the air junction block. On Argosy COEs, route the cab HVAC jumper harness (the end with the two female terminals) behind the center panel to the air junction block. See Fig Attach the two female terminals to the air pressure switch. 8. Disconnect the harness (97A) from the left side of the evaporator core thermostatic switch. See Fig Attach the female terminal on the cab HVAC jumper harness to the thermostatic switch. 8.6 Attach the male terminal on the cab HVAC jumper harness to the terminal that was removed from the thermostatic switch. See Fig Use cable ties as needed to secure the cab HVAC jumper harness. 8.8 On Century Class Conventionals, install the door above the waste bin. For instructions, see Section 60.08, Subject 00 of the Century Class Trucks Workshop Manual. 8.9 On Century Class Conventionals, slide the waste bin closed. 8.0 On Century Class Conventionals, install the HVAC cover and the right-hand upper dash cover. For instructions, see Section 60.08, Subject 0 of the Century Class Trucks Workshop Manual. 9. Connect the batteries. 0. Use ServiceLink to change the ICU ACPU parameter. 0. Identify the type of ICU the vehicle has and use Table to determine if the ICU ACPU parameter needs to be changed. See 5-80 if more help is needed in identifying the ICU. If the ICU ACPU parameter does not need to be changed, proceed to the next step. NOTE: You will need the. version, or a newer version of ServiceLink to change the ICU ACPU parameter. Call the Service Technical group at to assist with problems during reprogramming. 0. Choose ICU in the DataLink menu. 0. Choose the Parameters tab. 0. Reprogram the engine ECU fan parameter to keep the fan on for 80 seconds. This will prevent excessive engine fan cycling during engine idling when the air conditioning is on., April 00 Page 7
8 8-7 Binary Switch Retrofit for Century Class and Argosy Vehicles FLC Conventional IMPORTANT: Print out or manually record the ECU parameter values before making any changes. These factory settings can then be reentered if there is an unintentional change made to the ECU parameter values. factory settings are not the same as the engine manufacturer s default settings.. Use Insite to reprogram a Cummins engine. Questions concerning reprogramming the engine ECU can be directed to Cummins at ( 800 DIESELS). Open the Job menu. Select the Adjustments menu. Select Features and Parameters. Select Vehicle Performance. Change the Minimum Fan on Time for Air Conditioner Pressure Switch to 80 seconds. Press Yes. Press Yes again. Close the job and exit.. Use DDEC Distributor Programming System to reprogram a Detroit Diesel engine. The software is available from Detroit Diesel distributors by ordering part number MRS7500 or MRS7500L. Questions concerning reprogramming the engine ECU can be directed to Detroit Diesel at At Detroit Diesel Main Menu, select DDEC II/III Distributor Programing System. At ECM Programming Menu, highlight Update Customer Calibration. Turn the ignition key to the on position. Use the space bar to choose option. Enter the password. At Edit Parameters, scroll down to Fan Timer. Key in 80. Press F to save. Scroll through DDEC III parameters to Save, and press F. Turn the ignition off. Exit the program.. Use CAT Electronic Technician to reprogram a Caterpillar engine. Questions concerning reprogramming the engine can be directed to your TEPS manager. At Available ECMs, choose the appropriate engine control module. Open the Configuration Tool Menu. Choose A/C Fan ON/Off Time. Set the value to 80. Press OK. Exit the application. Page 8, April 00
9 Vehicles 8-7 FLC Conventional. Test the engine programming for A/C fan request.. Start the engine.. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fan cycling switch on the receiver-drier and immediately reconnect the electrical connector. See Fig...
