5 Batteries Storage, Charging and Fitting Storage Wet Batteries Always store in a cool dry place State of Charge Periodically check with an accurate digital voltmeter Stock Rotation Always sell the oldest batteries fi rst - if they are kept at the front of your stock then selecting them is easy ABOVE 12.4 Volts Charging Remove any wrapping and fi ller caps. Ensure the vents are fi tted fi rmly in position and the battery top is clean and dry. 2. When disconnecting the old battery, disconnect the negative (earth) cable fi rst. 3. Ensure correct terminal polarity, as even momentary incorrect connection can cause damage to the electrical system of the vehicle. 4. Ensure that the battery hold down clamp is suffi ciently tight to secure the battery, not allowing it to move in its housing. Never over-tighten securing bolts. 5. When connecting the new battery, connect the positive cable fi rst, followed by the negative (earth) cable. 6. Terminal connections must be tight but Do Not Over-Tighten. Smear terminals with a protective coating such as petroleum jelly. Check for slack in the alternator belt. With the engine revs moderately increased, measure alternator voltage at the battery terminals, readings should be between 13.8 and 14.8 volts. Alternatively, should immediate use be required, measure all cells with a hydrometer. Note: If after a second charge the battery fails the charge assessment standard, examine it using the 5 Point Testing Plan Hazard Warning Wear eye protection when testing. Do not wear metallic articles which might short circuit during testing, e.g. watches, bracelets. Keep plenty of water available for drenching any spilled acid. If battery vents are removable, blow gently across cell tops to disperse gases before discharge test. High rate testers which connect to the battery by simple probes are not recommended. 6 Batteries Warranty / Health & Safety Battery Warranty In the event of a battery failing due to faulty manufacture or materials within 24 months for Starter Batteries it will be passed for credit, McHugh Components Ltd. reserve the right to test the battery and if appropriate charge it. Other Applications: Replacement automotive batteries sold for other approved applications - Taxis or private cars used as Taxis, Emergency Service Vehicles, Vehicles used on a multi-shift basis and Marine applications have a 12 month warranty from the date of purchase in the event of failure due to faulty manufacturing or material. Note: Warranty does not cover. 1. The premature failure due to wear and tear, deterioration due to malfunction of any charging system, instances when the battery has been neglected or left in a discharged state, damage due to incorrect charge or over discharge, the use of the battery for any application not approved, damage due to the addition of any chemical additive other than distilled or de-ionized water. 2. All Batteries are marked with Serial and Manufacturing Codes. Their erasure or removal invalidates the warranty. Health and Safety The handling and proper use of lead-acid batteries is not hazardous, provided that sensible precautions are observed and that operatives, having been trained in their use, are adequately supervised. The purpose of this information is:- 1. To indicate the main potential hazards which may arise. 2. To outline the precautions to be taken to minimise such hazards. 3. To indicate action to be taken in the event of an accident. Battery Acid Batteries contain Dilute Sulphuric Acid which, in certain circumstances, may leak, and may be given off as droplets and/or spray during use or during recharging. The Hazards Dilute Sulphuric Acid is a poisonous and corrosive liquid, which can burn/irritate skin and eyes and could burn clothing. Precautions Always handle batteries with care. Always store upright. Never over-fi ll. Always charge in a well ventilated area. Always wear eye protection when handling, testing or charging batteries. Adding anything other than distilled or de-ionized water may be hazardous. For example, if sea water enters a battery Toxic Chlorine Gas will be given off. Such a contaminated battery should be disposed of in a safe manner and no attempt made to make the battery serviceable. Skin Contact: Eye Contact: Swallowing: Spillages: Immediately wash the affected area with copious amounts of clean water. Remove any contaminated clothing. Immediately irrigate eyes with clean water for at least 15 minutes. Drink water or milk. Small spillages can be washed away with water. Electrical Energy The Hazard The accidental connection of battery terminals by conductive objects, such as metal tools or jewellery etc. may generate suffi cient heat to cause burns, create arcing or cause molten metal to splash. Precautions Before handling a battery, remove metallic objects from hands and wrists. Before working on a vehicle electrical system disconnect the battery, disconnecting the earth strap fi rst and reconnecting last. Note: Before disconnecting the battery, record radio settings etc., if applicable, and refer to vehicle manufacturer s handbook for any further necessary precautions. Do not place tools on top of batteries. We also recommend the use of a Memory saver, (see Charging & Testing information) to retain the vehicle s electrical settings. Emergency Action: Burns: Electric Shock: In all cases seek medical attention. Seek medical attention. (If mains equipment is in use). Follow the correct emergency procedure for electric shock victims. Emission of Gases You must remember that there are always gases in the vicinity of a battery. This mixture of hydrogen and oxygen is emitted during charging and may also be emitted at times, for example, if a battery is moved or shaken. The Hazard An explosive atmosphere exists if the concentration of hydrogen exceeds 4%. Precautions Always charge in a well ventilated area. Wait at least 5 minutes after fi tting before making the connections No Smoking. No Naked Flames. No Sparks. When charging the battery, connect leads fi rst, then switch on the mains. Similarly, switch off the mains before disconnecting the leads. When connecting and disconnecting the battery in the vehicle, make sure all circuits are off. Always remember to remove the earth strap fi rst and reconnect last when working on a vehicle. If jump starting a vehicle, it is imperative that manufacturer s instructions are adhered to. It is important that the last connection, that of the earth lead to the vehicle with the fl at battery, is attached to an earthed point which is away from all fuel lines and brake points and at least half a metre away from the battery.
