1 BASIC FOAM FIREFIGHTING OPERATIONS Red and Green Systems Page Each of the Red and Green Foam Systems consists of one 3000 gallon foam concentrate storage tank, two foam concentrate pumps, a balanced pressure foam proportioner, related valves, plumbing, and remote Pilothouse controls. FOAM TANKS PORT and STARBOARD F P 4 F P 2 FOAM PUMPS PORT and STARBOARD F P 1 F P 3 Figure Each of the Red and Green Foam Systems has a 15 kw (20 Hp), 60 GPM foam pump (Pumps 3 and 4) that serves as the primary pump. The primary foam pumps are supported by 45 kw (60 Hp), 165 GPM secondary foam pumps (Pumps 1 and 2). The foam pumps maintain a working foam system pressure of 232 psi/16 bar. 2 Page Foam can be introduced into the fire stream at any time during a pumping evolution when the manual foam supply valves below deck are opened prior to starting the foam pumps. Each system has four (4) manually operated foam supply valves. Three (3) of these valves are located on each side of the foam room (Aft Hold) and supply the inlet side of the appropriate Red or Green System foam pumps (Fig ). The fourth foam supply valve in each system is located in each of the main foam supply lines in the Engine Room (Fig ); these valves pass foam concentrate from the discharge side of the Red or Green System foam pumps to the Red or Green System Balanced Pressure Proportioners (Fig ). The four foam supply valves for each system require an operator to manually open or close each valve. Foam pumps are remotely operated from the Engineer Consoles in the Pilothouse. The Balanced Pressure Foam Proportioners (Fig ) have an operating range of 1% to 6%. All three foam proportioners on Fireboat 2 are pre-set to 3%, including the White System proportioner in the Aft Hold (Fig ). The foam system is most efficient and proportions most accurately when the firefighting system is at its design pressure of 160 psi. NOTE The pressure to the foam proportioner must exceed the firemain pressure by a minimum of one bar (14.5 psi). The foam pumps supply concentrate at 16 bar/232 psi to the foam proportioners.

Follow firefighting system shut down procedures (Refer to End of Operation Shutdown in Basic Pumping Operations). 3. Shut down foam pump discharge valves at Control Panel forward or aft. 4. Close the manual foam supply valves (4 each, port and starboard) below deck. 5. Check foam tank levels at sight gauges and fill as needed. 6. Back flush system through hydrant connections (See below, Flushing the Foam System with Fresh Water )
9 White System Page The White System uses a dedicated balanced pressure foam proportioner which is properly sized for the four (4) 2 ½ outlets found on the aft hydrant manifolds. One 60 GPM foam pump will be used to supply the White System, and will provide adequate concentrate for all four 2 ½ outlets simultaneously. The White System will normally be used for hand line operations. Water is supplied to the White System by the Blue System pumps, either from Pump #6, with the Crossover/ Isolation Valve closed, or from the Blue System manifold with the Isolation/Crossover Valve open (Fig ). Foam concentrate can be supplied to the White System by either the port or starboard foam pumps (Pump 4 or 3). White System Foam Operation 1. Open two manual foam supply valves on the port or starboard side in the Aft Hold. 2. Bring the firefighting system to the desired pressure (160 psi) 3. Open the discharge valve(s) for the required foam pump. 4. Open two valves to the Balanced Pressure Proportioner for the White System: for example; manual foam export valve FE-2P FOAM EX at the port aft bulkhead in the Engine Room, and valve 7 FOAM AFT HYD, located overhead in the Aft Hold and controlled remotely from the Engineer s Consoles in the Pilot House. 11 Page FLUSHING THE FOAM SYSTEMS WITH FRESH WATER NOTE FLUSH ONE FOAM SYSTEM (White, Red, or Green) and ONE FOAM PUMP at a time. NOTE Leaving the four foam pump supply valves closed during flushing will allow the flushing water to bypass the foam pumps. The remaining components of the foam system (foam proportioners, piping, manifolds, etc.) can then be flushed without involving the foam pumps. Filling progress must be monitored on the sight gauges connected to the foam tanks to prevent spillage once both tanks have reached full capacity.

CAUTION Remember that foam, either as concentrate or in a foam/water solution, is an extremely powerful detergent. Painted surfaces and other equipment will be etched or otherwise damaged if left in contact with foam in any form. After foam operations, it is essential to rinse the fireboat and all equipment thoroughly with fresh water.
