4 THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR INSTALLING THE KOOL SHIELD USING THE UNIVERSAL MOUNTING BRACKET. FOR REGULAR INSTALLATION, SKIP AHEAD TO PAGE 9 **Confirm with dealer how to locate internal structure, measurments might vary by trailer manufacturer. STEP 1: Locate Wall Structure Locate rivets on the outside of trailer. Notate distance of first three sets of rivets from the back of the trailer. 3

5 STEP 2: Mark Inside Trailer Wall Using the same reference point, take your outside measurements, (Subtract 3/4 On Utility Trailers ) and mark inside of trailer at least 1 1/2 down from ceiling, clearing any obstruction. 4

6 7/32 Drill Bit Parts Needed 1-1/2 2-3/4 Min. STEP 3: Marking First Drill Hole Place bracket (with countersunk holes towards you) a minimum of 2-3/4 from the back of the trailer at your 1-1/2 down mark. Align the closest set of holes to your second vertical marks (on Utility Trailer this will be the countersunk holes). Mark upper hole, remove bracket and drill hole at mark. - CAUTION: DO NOT DRILL COMPLETELY THROUGH TRAILER WALL. USE A DRILL STOP TO PREVENT THIS - You will feel some resistance if you have hit internal structure. 5

7 7/32 Drill Bit T30 Torx 1/4-20 x 2 Bit Screw Nut 1/4-20 x 2 Screw Parts Needed STEP 4: Placing Flange Nuts Into Bracket The Flange Nuts are used to attach the Kool Shield Mounting Brackets. Because the Kool Shield Mounting Brackets need to be at least 3-1/2 from the inside of the closed door, place the Flange Nuts into the holes that are approximately 4-1/2 from the inside of the closed trailer door. (On Utility Trailers this will be the holes that are inline with the countersunk holes as shown.) STEP 5: Mounting Top Bracket Place the bracket back up and screw in place using the torx head screw. Square up the bracket and mark the remaining holes using your original lines as a guide. Drill your marks and attach the bracket using the remaining screws (One torx head and 4 hex heads). Use spacers if needed. On Utility Trailers, ignore the first line and mark/drill the first holes in the bracket closest to the trailer door as shown below. Spacers 6

8 3/16 Hex Bit 5/16-18 x 1/2 Screw Parts Needed STEP 6: Mounting Vertical Bracket Assembly Line up the top two holes in the Vertical Bracket Assembly with the Flange Nuts in the Top Bracket. Attach with provided bolts as shown below. IMPORTANT When using the 5/16-18 screws to attach the assembly to the Top Bracket via the Flange Nuts, use Lock Tight to ensure the screws don t loosen during on the road travel. 7

9 1/4-20 x 2 Screw 3/4 Long Drive Anchor 7/32 Drill Bit 1/4 Drill Bit Parts Needed STEP 6 Continued: Mounting Vertical Bracket Assembly Make Sure that the vertical bracket is square with the trailer. Using the 1/4 drill bit, drill through the three holes in the bracket and use the 3/4 Drive Anchors to secure to the trailer wall. Using the 7/32 drill bit, drill two holes on the bottom side of the bracket using existing holes as reference. Secure using 1/4-20 x 2 screws....continue TO PAGE 16, STEP 9, TO FINISH INSTALLATION 8

12 4 3-1/2 Internal Structure STEP 1: Position and mark Mounting Bracket holes Position Mounting Bracket at least 3-1/2 from front of inside of closed door Ensure there is at least 4 of clearance in front of the bracket to nearest obstruction Use Mounting Bracket to mark holes to be drilled IMPORTANT: Find internal structure of the trailer to mark and mount bracket onto 11

13 STEP 2: Drill Mounting Bracket Holes Using a 17/64 Drill Bit, drill marked Mounting Bracket Holes taking care not to drill through outside of trailer IMPORTANT: - Ensure internal structure is drilled - Only use a 17/64 Drill Bit - Take care to not elongate hole 17/64 Drill Bit Internal Structure Parts Needed STEP 3: Attach Mounting Bracket Using supplied 5/16-18 x 2-1/4 Screws, attach Mounting Bracket to trailer wall IMPORTANT: - Seat screw heads flush - Use correct screws - Do not over torque screw and strip drilled holes T40 Torx Bit 5/16-18 x 2-1/4 Screw Parts Needed 12

14 Internal Structure STEP 4: Mark Side Seal mounting holes Measure distance from back of trailer to internal structure from previous step and draw a vertical line the length of the wall. Hang and position Side Seal on Mounting Bracket and mark hole locations to be match drilled along prior mark IMPORTANT: Mark location of internal structure of the trailer to mount seal to 13

15 STEP 5: Drill Side Seal mounting holes Using a 7/32 Drill Bit, drill marked Side Seal Holes taking care not to drill through outside of trailer IMPORTANT: - Ensure internal structure is drilled - Only use a 7/32 Drill Bit - Take care to not elongate hole 7/32 Drill Bit Parts Needed STEP 6: Attach Side Seal Using supplied 1/4-20 x 2-1/4 Screws, and nut, attach Side Seal to trailer wall and Mounting Bracket IMPORTANT: - Use correct screws - Do not over torque screw and strip drilled holes T30 Torx Bit Nut 1/4-20 x 2-1/4 Screw Parts Needed 14

16 STEP 7: Locate and mark Lock Bracket mounting holes Position Lock Bracket and mark holes on side seal to be match drilled along prior mark IMPORTANT: Mark atop location of internal structure to mount Lock Brackets to 17/64 Drill Bit T40 Torx Bit 5/16-18 x 2-1/4 Screw Parts Needed STEP 8: Drill mounting holes and install Lock Bracket Using a 17/64 Drill Bit, drill marked Lock Bracket Holes taking care not to drill through outside of trailer. Install using supplied 5/16-18 x 2-1/4 Screws IMPORTANT: - Ensure internal structure is drilled - Only use a 17/64 Drill Bit - Take care to not elongate hole - Use correct screws 15

17 STEP 9: Locate and mark Top Seal mounting holes Position Top Seal and mark holes to be match drilled, locating internal structure is not as important as prior steps TIP: Mark and drill one hole, install Top Seal, then mark remaining holes STEP 10: Drill mounting holes and install Top Seal Using a 1/4 Drill Bit, drill marked Top Seal Holes taking care not to drill through outside of trailer then install using supplied 1/4 rivets IMPORTANT: Only use a 1/4 Drill Bit 1/4 Drill Bit Anchor Parts Needed 16

18 STEP 11: Repeat installation of Side Seals and Brackets on right side Using same directions and considerations in previous steps, repeat installation on right side of trailer keeping same distance from top of trailer to Locking Brackets STEP 12: Measure width between Locking Brackets Measure width of trailer between the flat section of the Locking Brackets as shown IMPORTANT: Measure twice, cut once! 17

19 STEP 13: Cut off excess Lock Rod length if needed Double check measurement of trailer width and cut equal amounts off each end of Lock Rod to fit and ensure Lock Rod will be centered in trailer and it s full length is ½ less than the interior of the width of the trailer at the Lock Brackets IMPORTANT: Leave zip tie in place securing lock lever 18

20 5/16 x 2-1/2 Bolt STEP 14: Install curtain into Lock Brackets Adjust sliding Rod Ends and lift Curtain into Lock Brackets Hold curtain to prevent from unrolling and install Bolt through Lock Bracket and Rod End on both sides and tighten firmly. Verify Curtain is centered IMPORTANT: - Make sure to hold curtain during this step to avoid it unrolling, keeping plastic wrapon curtain assembly helps too - Leave zip tie in place securing lock lever Parts Needed 19

21 STEP 15: Center curtain and lock in place Tighten Locking Collet onto Rod end to secure curtain in center of trailer 20

22 5/16 x 1 Bolt Parts Needed STEP 16: Install Guard Bar Place Guard Bar on Mounting Bracket ledge and install Bolt into integrated nuts 21

23 STEP 17: Test Installation Cut zip tie securing Lock Lever closed and release Lock Lever by pulling down curtain. Open and close curtain making sure that Lock Rod engages Locking Bracket and Lock Rod rotates past Mounting Brackets and opens fully above the Guard Bar. Install Long Pull Strap on bottom right using buckle clip. This allows for easier usage from ground height when outside the trailer. IMPORTANT: Control curtain while rolling up to make sure it does not slam closed. Repeated uncontrolled closure will cause excessive wear and reduce life expectancy of product. 22

24 The Kool Shield is guaranteed for one year from date of purchase, subject to the following: Unit must be registered by using the Warranty Registration Card furnished. Guarantee is limited to replacement of the curtain (if defective) and the Mandrel Assembly. No labor charges will be honored. Guarantee does not cover failures due to: 1. Faulty installation 2. Abuse - ripping, cutting, or puncturing curtain 3. Damage of any kind 4. Wear Should you have a guarantee claim contact Customer Service to arrange for return of the failed part and replacement. Call Note: We are not responsible for claims of any kind that arise from charges levied against the carrier for spoiled or rejected product.
