1 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Summit Racing Universal Shifter This shifter will fit early and late model Muncies, early and late model Borg Warners, Saginaws and Richmond T-10 S. IMPORTANT! The following steps are precautionary actions taken to avoid any failures, damages and/or injuries to the vehicle and/or person(s) in area. These are highly recommended steps that will help ensure a safe working standard. 1. Do not use a hydraulic jack as means of supporting your vehicle while working on it. Instead, use jack stands to rest the weight of the vehicle on when working underneath of it. 2. Always have vehicle and jack stands on a solid, level surface to prevent slipping/shifting and possible injury and/or damages. DO NOT USE JACK AND OR JACK STANDS ON GRAVEL! 3. Remove the ground cable from the negative battery terminal, to prevent any accidental injuries or damages from electrical contact. 4. Never run vehicle in enclosed space for extended periods of time due to toxic fumes coming from exhaust. Always make certain work space is well ventilated. 5. Eye and ear protection is recommended when using power tools on your vehicle. These great looking Summit universal 4 speed shifters are a great way to dress up the interior of your muscle car--not to mention a reliable way to shift gears. Each shifter features a chrome plated steel stick, a powder coated shift mechanism for rust protection, and a round white shift knob. They use a dry film lubricant to eliminate dirt-attracting grease, and provide a smooth shift action. 2 WARNING: Vehicles that are equipped with a steering column lock that can only be turned off when the transmission is shifted into reverse must install the safety ignition blocker that is included in this kit. The blocker prevents accidental steering wheel lock up while the vehicle is in motion. This modification is described below. BACKDRIVE MODIFICATION Move the stock shift lever to the REVERSE position. Fasten the reverse lever (at the base of the steering column ahead of the firewall) in the reverse position. Remove the back drive link from this lever. This will allow the column to tock when the ignition key is turned off. Next, the SAFETY IGNITION BLOCKER supplied with this kit must be installed. See the diagram detailing the procedure. 1: Remove Stock Shifter and Linkage after properly blocking the vehicle from rolling, put the shifter in the neutral position. Note the position of the stock shifter rods and arms. If possible, you may want to duplicate the original set-up on your new shifter for ease of installation. 2: Install Mounting Plate-Using three 3/8-16)Q-3/4" bolts, three lock washers and the spacer tubes to bolt the shifter mounting plate to the tail housing of the transmission. If there is more than one mounting location on the tail housing, select the one that locates the shifter so that it will be centered as closely as possible in the shifter hole in the We recommend using Loc-Tite blue on the mounting plate bolts on final installation. See fig. 1. 3: Install Shifter insert the alignment pin through the shifter levers to align them in the neutral position. See fig. 2. Next, place the shifter up through the shifter hole in the floor and bolt the shifter to the mounting plate using a hex head bolt in the center and a 3/8-16x1 hex head bolt in the slot at the rear. Install with washers as shown in fig. 2. Enlarge the hole in the floor if needed, but do not exceed the dimensions of your shifter boot. 4: Install Shifter Arms-The shifter arms are the rectangular pieces that have 4 holes and 3 slots in them. See fig 4. Select the slots in the shifter arms that will put the arms in the best position. For the 1-2 and 34 gear positions, most nearly vertical is best. For the reverse arm (located rearmost on transmission), the travel should be with an equal angle on either side of vertical, or in the original position. Note that in fig. 5 the shifter arms for the 1-2 and 34 position are above the pivot point. The opposite is true for the reverse arm. If the shifter arms are installed upside down, you will reverse your original shift pattern. When all shifter arms are attached to the transmission, move them back and forth checking for any interference. Grind off any part of the arms that restrict their ability to fully click into gear. 5: Installing Shift Rods and Testing Operation-Notice that there are two holes in each shifter am and two holes in each shift lever. Use the combination that gives the desired travel of the stick. This will involve some trial and error and the removal of the alignment pin for checking the movement. Here is how to do it: a.) Select a hole in the shifter arm and put the shift rod end into it and secure it with a flat washer and a retaining clip. Note jn the fig. 5 detail that the clip is on the inside of the am on the 34 am and on the outside of the arm on the 1-2 arm.

3 b.) After installing the clips, screw the adjusting buttons onto the threaded end of the shift rod until they slip easily into the hole on the proper lever on the shifter and install the clip for that end. The alignment pin must be installed for this step. c.) After all shift rods are installed, remove the alignment pin and have a helper shift through the gears while you check for proper travel and any interference. The stick should move smoothly through the gears with the proper travel. If it doesn't check O.K., make another hole selection based on your observations and run through the process again. If there is still some interference or improper travel on the best hole choices, you may have to slightly bend one or more of the shift rods to adjust. If you must bend a shift rod, do not use heat. d.) After you find the best combination, cut off any excess length at the rear of the shift rods. 6: Adjust Stop bolts- Have a helper push stick firmly into 2nd gear and hold. Screw 2nd gear stop bolt (at front) in until contact is felt. Back out bolt one full tum and tighten the jam nut. Have your helper shift to 3rd gear and adjust the 3rd gear stop bolt (at rear) in the same manner. 7: Install Boot Reinstall the original boot or install a new aftermarket boot.
