Vintage Wheel Assembly You will need: Soldering Iron & Solder or JB Weld Epoxy Spoke material (Music Wire /32) 1 Piece Scrap plywood (assembly jig) Music wire or dowel (1/4) (best if you use your axle diameter) Brass Tube Hub Center Section (optional) STEP 1 Assemble and prepare the hubs Decide which of the wheel types are most appropriate for your model and make the hub as shown. Cut and press fit a small section of Brass tubing between the two hub halves if necessary. Solder or epoxy in place Symmetrical Offset Double Offset STEP 2 Make an assembly jig Note: Tubing can be pressed onto either shoulder. Axel holes can be shimmed or drilled out if necessary Shown in the photo is one we made here in aluminum. You can easily do the same with a scrap piece of plywood and a couple of pieces of music wire. Measure the exact diameter of the rim and using a compass draw a circle on the plywood. Drill the exact center (use a drill press if possible) Make sure the center wire is perpendicular to the surface of the plywood. Tire Finishing To join the rubber tire we recommend using Bob Smiths Black Flexible CA and accelerator. Regular CA works too but leaves a stiff joint. Ends should be trimmed perpendicular and clean.

Ends should be trimmed perpendicular and clean. Fit to rim should be snug and even but not over stretching the rubber. Apply the CA to one side and accelerator to the other. Excess CA is OK and will be removed later TIP: We use a sharp bread knife and a miter box to slice the ends. A clean even cut will give the best results. Let a sharp knife do the work try not to crush the rubber when cutting. Sand off any excess after the CA cures. If you get a small gap when putting the tire on the rim remove the rubber and apply CA into the hole. Spitz with accelerator and press together again. HINT: Shoe Goo (we get ours at ACE Hardware ) work great to keep the rubber on the rim. 4 A registered tradename of Prototype Production and Engineering inc. 40 SPOKE EUROPEAN STYLE 3 3 Second layer First layer For the correct placement of the spokes, install spoke #1 then go to spoke #2 skipping one hole on the hub and three holes on the rim. Repeat in a counterclockwise pattern going through #3 until you complete one full rotation. Repeat the pattern in the opposite direction to complete one side of the hub. Solder the wires to the hub only. Flip the wheel over and repeat the process on the other side. Check that the rim is concentric to the hub when satisfied solder and trim the ends. Hint: To check the concentricity before soldering the spokes at the rim. Take the rim and spin it on a piece of wire. Gently press it true before soldering the rim. 5 A registered tradename of Prototype Production and Engineering inc. 64 SPOKE BRITISH STYLE Tips and Hints: Make sure that you clean the flux off of the rim and hubs after assembly. The acid in the flux will cause the steel to rust if you don't. For heavier models using the larger diameter wheels you may want to provide additional reinforcement to the spoke attachment at the rim. This can be accomplished by bending the spoke wire over in the outside of the rim (make sure to always go in the direction of rotation) or to cut small diameter tubing to 1/16 lengths and solder to both sides of the rim. Not only does this strengthen the wheel but also simulates tension adjustment nuts for added scale realism. 6 A registered tradename of Prototype Production and Engineering inc. Spoke Attachment Methods Note: Spoke material is not included as a standard part of the kit. Depending on the type of wheel you are making there are several options. For most applications (WWI) you can use music wire available at any hobby shop and Michael's Craft stores in the K&S Metals display. Lowes and Home Depot also carry music wire. If you want to use a chrome or stainless wire we recommend. Western Wire & Cable Eden Road # 77 Mountain Center, CA (760) Music Wire Basic Hole Rim Solder or JB weld this side only. Make sure that when you clear the pilot hole that there is a little slop in the hole for the epoxy to wick into. DO NOT bend the wire over. There will not be enough room for the tire to seat. Trim the excess with a Dremel (or similar) cutoff wheel. Do not leave more than 1/16 excess. Using a small Brass washer helps anchor the spoke end especially if soldering. Music Wire Scale Hole Scale details can be made with 1/8 to 3/16 sections of brass, copper, or aluminum tubing. 1/16 diameter should fit around the spoke wire. Small (00-90 or 0-80)nuts will simulate the spoke tension adjustment nut. CA or solder in place. Larger diameter wheels will have Brass grommets included. Rim Valve Pin Drill Hole Rim Scale valve stems can be made from the same section of tubing mentioned above with a pin mounted.
