3 You needn t have any space worries with HIS, the gas-insulated switchgear for indoor and outdoor use, because HIS requires less than half the space of a comparable air-insulated switchgear. The 8DQ1 type HIS is a compact switchgear solution for a rated voltage of up to 550 kv, used mainly for renewal or expansion of air-insulated outdoor and indoor substations, particularly if the operator wants to carry out modifications while the switchgear is in service. With new construction projects, high site prices and increasingly complex approval procedures mean that space requirement is the prime factor in costing. With the HIS solution, the circuit-breakers, disconnectors, earthing switches and transformers are accommodated in compressed gas-tight enclosures and at minimum 5 independent gas compartments, thus rendering the switchgear extremely compact. Thus, you can also meet the growing demands on your switchgear within the scope of the existing site. 5 CB H-arrangement 3

Thus for example, one airinsulated (conventional) bay can be replaced by two HIS bays with space to spare! Low operating costs, minimal maintenance requirement and long service life of the system additionally help to reduce life-cycle costs. Conversion is readily possible using factory preassembled and tested units. In addition, HIS fits easily into your existing control and protection concept whether it is conventional, digital or process-bus based with SICA. In this way, HIS can be integrated cost-effectively and flexibly in your substation. Low investment cost Computer-aided Engineering Tools and compact supply units enable short planning and delivery times. By virtue of the small, compact bay structure, only a few foundations are necessary. Civil works are reduced to a minimum, so that even in mountainous, rocky terrain, construction presents no problems. The switchgear is delivered to the site in already preassembled and tested poles. This significantly reduces the time required between issuing the contract and handover of the complete switchgear to the client. In addition, HIS requires only half the ground area of airinsulated switchgear. Extension of existing outdoor switchgear is, to a large extent, possible during operation. For this purpose, it is only necessary to isolate subsections of the equipment for a short time. This minimizes switchgear outage time. In this way, you keep investment cost down and ensure early commissioning. Safe, reliable operation The operating personnel are protected from contact with live parts by virtue of the enclosed construction. Integrated disconnectors and earthing switches on the busbar and outgoing feeder side permit risk-free isolation and earthing of switchgear sections. All operations are remote controlled. Outgoing feeder earthing switches can also be supplied in the makeproof high-speed version. Release of conductor connections to establish isolating sections and the use of mobile earth rods can be avoided. Rupture diaphragms with defined directions of discharge prevent unacceptably high pressure rise in the enclosures. Bay construction on one level assists straightforward layout of the switchgear. In addition to operator safety, the HIS solution provides excellent protection against vandalism. If a fault should occur it can be quickly remedied. Replacement of one pole is possible at short notice, so that downtime of the switchgear is reduced to a minimum. Replacement parts are available from current production within a very short time. Thus, you ensure maximum safety for your personnel and your switchgear and reliable operation. Environmentally compatible The environment also benefits from your HIS. The oil-free operating mechanism and the extremely effective sealing of the enclosure prevent any environmental contamination. Their long service life and minimal space requirement additionally conserve resources. This means that you are protecting the environment for the future. Impervious to damage and maintenance-free Once the switchgear is operational, it will operate reliably and require minimal maintenance for at least 50 years. Only after 10 years do we recommend an initial visual inspection. Being completely enclosed, the cleaning required is also minimal. The high quality of the switchgear is a result of comprehensive quality management. The enclosures are corrosion-resistant aluminum castings and the motor-operated mechanisms are selflubricating. The switchgear possesses no exposed contact systems and operating linkages on air, so that they are protected from external influences, even under corrosive environmental conditions. It is also aseismic and impervious to wind. This means that you can rely on your switchgear at all times with extremely low operating cost. 6 Efficiency due to odular Design HIS switchgear is single-phase encapsulated in order to keep dielectric and dynamic stresses to a minimum. The switchgear is clearly laid out on one level. Aluminum is used as enclosure material. As a result, the switchgear is free from corrosion and exceptionally lightweight. State-of-the-art design methods and casting techniques permit optimum dielectric and mechanical construction of the enclosures. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) is used as the insulating and arc-quenching gas. All modules are attached to one another by flanges. The gastightness of the flange joints is ensured by the Siemens O-ring sealing principle, proven over decades of service. Gas-tight bushings permit subdivision of the bay into several distinct gas compartments. Each gas compartment is fitted with its own gas monitor, rupture disks and filter material. Static filters absorb moisture and decomposition products. In the improbable event of a fault, rupture disks prevent unacceptably high pressure buildup in the enclosures. When they activate, diverter nozzles ensure defined direction of discharge of the gas. The outdoor-proof enclosures and operating mechanisms are fitted with space heaters. For air-insulated outdoor switchgear (AIS) and gas-insulated switchgear substations (GIS), the same type of interrupter units and operating mechanism is used, both of which have been proving their worth for decades. The circuit-breaker are suitable for single-pole rapid auto-reclosure. Interrupter unit The interrupter unit used in the circuit-breaker for arcquenching operates on the self-compression principle. By virtue of the low amount of operating energy required, the mechanical forces involved are low. This has a positive effect on the stressing both of the circuit-breaker and of the enclosure. The current path In the case of a self-compression circuit-breaker, the current path is formed by the contact support (1), the base (6) and the moving contact cylinder (5). In the closed condition, the operating current flows through the main contact (3). An arcing contact (4) is connected parallel to the main contact. Interruption of operating current During the breaking operation, the main contact (3) opens first and the current commutates on the arcing contact (4), which is still closed. By this means erosion of the main contact is avoided. As the breaking operation progresses, an arc develops between the contacts (4). The contact cylinder (5) moves simultaneously in the base (6) and compresses the remaining arc-quenching gas. The compressed arc-quenching gas flows through the contact cylinder (5) into the contact gap and extinguishes the arc. Interruption of fault current 8 With high values of short-circuit current, the arc-quenching gas at the arcing contact is heated up considerably by the energy of the arc. This leads to a pressure rise in the contact cylinder. Consequently the energy required for build-up of the arc-quenching pressure does not have to be supplied by the operating mechanism. As the switching operation progresses, the fixed arcing contact releases the outflow of the nozzle (2). The gas now flows out of the contact cylinder and through the nozzle, thus extinguishing the arc.

It is installed in a compact, corrosion-free aluminium housing. The closing spring and the opening spring are arranged so as to be visible in the operating mechanism block. The entire operating mechanism unit is completely isolated from the SF 6 gas compartments. Anti-friction bearings and a maintenance-free charging mechanism ensure decades of reliable operation. Proven Siemens circuit-breaker design principles have been applied, e.g. vibration-proof latches and load-free decoupling of the charging mechanism. 10 Disconnector modules Earthing switches Common features of disconnectors and earthing switches Disconnectors assure, in the open state of the circuitbreaker, a dielectrically safe gap between system components of varying potential. Disconnectors serve to isolate systems and components and are used as busbar disconnectors or outgoing-feeder disconnectors. Two funnelshaped cast-resin bushings carry the contact system of the disconnector. The pressurized gas in the module provides the necessary insulation against high-voltages. This module is available with different housings, depending on the switchgear design. The contact gap itself, however, always has the same shape whereas the conductor connections to adjacent modules vary. The housing for this module is designed to permit installation of two earthing switches. The disconnector modules are housed in separate gas-tight compartments and are monitored likewise separately, although sometimes along with adjacent modules. Earthing switches (for work in progress) are switchgear for earthing and shorting circuits. A makeproof version (highspeed) can be used to verify isolation from supply. An insulated version can be used for measuring purposes and for testing protective relays. In 8DQ1 switchgear, the earthing switches are of a pintype design. They are preferably used in conjunction with disconnectors but can also be supplied as a separate module with their own housing. With the pin-type earthing switch, the earthing pin at earth potential is pushed into the making contact. akeproof earthing switches are equipped with a spring-stored energy mechanism. The electric motor built into this operating mechanism charges a switching spring which stores the required switching energy. Force is transmitted into the enclosure via gas-tight shaft glands. Alarm switches and ON/OFF indicators are force-fitted. Separate but identical motor operating mechanisms are used for disconnectors and earthing switches. anual emergency operating mechanisms are integrated. 11 Instrument transformers Surge arrester module Both current and voltage transformers are used for measuring and protection purposes. Current transformer The current transformers used are of the single-phase inductive type. Current transformers are preferably located on both sides of the circuit breaker. The high-voltage conductor forms the primary winding. The cores with the secondary windings are designed to comply with the requirements regarding accuracy class rating and performance. It ist possible to change over to various transformation ratios via the current transformer s secondary connections which are routed through a gas-tight bushing plate into a terminal box. The pressurized SF 6 gas in the module serves as primary insulation. The encapsulated design provides very high reliability in terms of EC (electromagnetic compatibility). Voltage transformer module In the modular 8DQ1 system, each single-phase inductive voltage transformer is encapsulated in its own housing, thus forming a separate gastight module. Each voltage transformer consists of the following main components: An iron core One or more secondary windings on a rack and The primary winding. The pressurized gas inside the enclosure together with the film insulation provides insulation against high voltage. The high-voltage connection to the switchgear is established by means of the primary conductor, which is supported by a gas-tight bushing. The secondary connections are routed via a gas-tight bushing plate into the terminal box. The gas and an adjacent module are usually monitored together. An external gas-pipe connection is made for this purpose. If required, encapsulated surge arresters can be directly connected. Their purpose is to limit any overvoltages which may occur. Their active parts consist of metal-oxide resistors with a strongly non-linear current/ voltage characteristic. The arrester is generally flangejointed to the switchgear via a gas-tight bushing. In the tank of the arrester module, there is a manway opening through which the internal conductor can be inspected. On the underside, there are connections for monitoring the gas and for arrester checking devices. Arrester Current transformer 11 Voltage-transformer module

12 Termination modules The termination modules connect the bays of the gasinsulated switchgear to the following: Overhead lines Transformer or reactor coils Cables. They thus function as the transition link between the SF 6 gas insulation within the enclosure to other insulating media. In the 8DQ1 range, various types of termination modules are available to suit different requirements, depending on the connections required. Cable termination module This module acts as a link between the metal-enclosed gas-insulated switchgear and a high-voltage cable. All customary kinds of high-voltage cables can be connected without problem to the cable termination module. The manway opening also serves as a connecting flange for the high-voltage cable-testing system. For high-voltage testing, the primary conductor connection between the cable sealing end and the switchgear can be removed. Outdoor termination module The outdoor termination module enables the transition from the gas-insulated switchgear to air-insulated components or overhead lines. This termination is a combination of an angle-type module and an outdoor/sf 6 bushing. The length, type of shield and creepage distance of the outdoor/sf 6 bushing are determined by the insulation coordination, the minimum clearance and the degree of pollution. The out-door termination module is suitable for air-insulated connections between HIS and: Transformer termination module The transformer termination module enables a direct transition from the SF 6 gas insulation to the bushing of an oil-insulated transformer or reactor coil. For this purpose, the transformer bushing must be oil-tight, gas-tight and pressure resistant. Any temperature-related movement and irregular settling of the switchgear s or transformer s foundations are absorbed by expansion fittings. Overhead lines Outdoor bushings of outdoor transformers or reactor coils Outdoor sealing ends of high-voltage cables. Splitting of the connection points of the three phases to provide the necessary air clearance for the conductor insulation must be taken into account when the substation is being designed. 13 Extension and angular modules Busbar module These modules are used for the necessary connections within a bay. Their shape and number depends on the circuit and the layout of the bay. Extension module The busbar modules of adjacent bays are connected by expansion joints which absorb constructional tolerances and temperature-related movement both longitudinally and transversely to the busbar. Axially guided sliding contacts between the conductors compensate for temperaturerelated changes in conductor length. A sectionalizer (to increase the availability of the switchgear) can be fitted without any additional measures. Angular module Busbar module 13

14 Control and onitoring Reliable and Flexible Control and Protection System Proven switchgear control Robust electromechanical components are used to control and monitor circuit-breakers as well as other switchgear components. All elements necessary for the control and monitoring of circuit-breaker operating mechanisms are incorporated into the circuit-breaker control unit. The operating mechanisms are pre-tested at the factory to reduce commissioning time to a minimum and to eliminate any potential causes of error. Gas monitoring Gas-tight insulating partitions subdivide each switchgear bay into functionally separate gas compartments (for circuit-breakers, disconnectors, voltage transformers, surge arrester and termination modules). Singlepole monitoring is recommended for the basic version of the equipment. Gas monitoring of the circuit-breaker is generally separate from the other modules. The gas compartments are monitored continuously with density monitors, with any deviations triggering an instant alarm signal. Flexible and reliable: Feeder and station control and protection systems Local control is easily accessible in the separately mounted control cubicle. As an optional feature the outgoing feeder protection can also be housed in the same cubicle. The local control cubicle is either placed opposite the switchgear itself or is physically separated from it. Standard screened control cables are used to establish the connections between the local control cubicle and the high-voltage equipment. They are connected by means of coded plug connectors in order to cut the cost of installation and minimize the risk of cabling errors. Naturally, on request, we can also supply high-voltage switchgear featuring any of the commonly available feeder and station control and protection systems. We offer systems that can meet all your requirements. Neutral interfaces in the switchgear control system permit the connection of a: Conventional control system with protective interlocking and control panels Digital control and protection system with user-friendly bay controllers and station Automation with PC workstations (HI) intelligent, fully networked digital control and protection system with additional monitoring and remote diagnostic functions. 15 Transport, Installation, Commissioning, aintenance Transport Installation and Commissioning aintenance erection In order to facilitate transport and on-site installation, our switchgear assemblies are shipped in the largest possible units (one pole without bushings), with emphasis on ease-of-handling. Restrictions on transport dimensions, however, make it sometimes necessary to split up one pole into several consignment units. The means of transport, routes and on-site handling are taken into consideration in the process. All transport units are mechanically and dielectrically tested at factory before being delivered. In the case of modules which con-tain switching devices, all operating-mechanism attachments are preset in the factory as one unit prior to shipment. All such parts where the modules are to be joined to other equipment are protected against corrosion and sealed with transport covers. Goods are packed according to means, duration and route of transport and also in line with nature and duration of storage. Shipments within Europe are normally transported by road. Switchgear supplied to countries outside Europe is transported in sealed packing units which are suitable for overseas transport and for a combined shipping and storage time of up to 12 months. In special cases, the sealed packing units can also be designed for longer periods. The delivery of the bays in just a few, easy-to-handle transport units reduces the time and effort needed for on-site installation. The control unit of the circuit-breaker and the gas monitoring unit of the bay are supplied factory-fitted on the supporting frame or as one separate standard cubicle. After completion of the assembly work, all the switching devices and electrical circuits for controlling and monitoring are tested to ensure that they are working properly, both electrically and mechanically. Flange joints fitted on site are tested for gas leaks. All other flange joints are factorytested. Commissioning work on the primary section finishes with the high-voltage test whose purpose is to verify that no abnormal stress during transportation took place and that all installation work, including the work done inside the enclosure, has been correctly carried out. All tests are performed in accordance with IEC and the results are documented in the final test reports. Our SF 6 -insulated switchgear installations are designed and manufactured so as to provide an optimal balance between design, materials used and maintenance requirements. Due to the hermetically-sealed enclosure, they require a minimum of maintenance and can even be regarded as maintenance-free under normal operating conditions. Visual inspections, for example, are necessary only once every 10 years. A visual inspection is carried out baywise during which the switchgear can continue to operate and the gas compartments can remain closed. A major inspection is not due until after 25 years. 15

19 Quality Assurance The quality of Siemens gasinsulated switchgear is ensured by an all-encompassing state-of-the-art quality-management system. The system was certified in 1983 in accordance with CSA Z299 and confirmed in 1989 in accordance with ISO oreover, since 1992 the test laboratories are independent as result of the accreditation in accordance with EN The quality management system is subjected to continuous improvement, 1994 the environmental protection system according ISO and 2003 the ISO 9001:2000 were implemented. The system covers each single process in the life-cycles of our products, from marketing to after-sales service. Regular management reviews and internal audits of all processes ensure that the system is continuously up to date and effective. The basis for this is complete documentation of all the procedures relevant to quality. The quality of our switchgear consequently meets even the highest requirements. In addition to consistent and detailed quality management, the special clean areas set up in the production workshops make an important contribution towards the high quality of our gas-insulated switchgear. Comprehensive manufacturing inspections and routine testing of individual components, sub-assemblies and modules all ensure reliable operation of the overall product. After the routine mechanical tests, and prior to despatch, final quality verification is carried out in the form of a high-voltage test on the complete bay or the complete transport units.
