3 5 CB H-arrangement You needn t have any space worries with HIS, the gas-insulated switchgear for indoor and outdoor use, because HIS requires less than half the space of a comparable air-insulated switchgear. The 8DN8 type HIS is a compact switchgear solution for a rated voltage of up to 145 kv, used mainly for renewal or expansion of air-insulated outdoor and indoor substations, particularly if the operator wants to carry out modifications while the switchgear is in service. With new construction projects, high site prices and increasingly complex approval procedures mean that space requirement is the prime factor in costing. With the HIS solution, the circuit-breakers, disconnectors, earthing switches and transformers are accommodated in compressed gas-tight enclosures, thus rendering the switchgear extremely compact. Thus, you can also meet the growing demands on your switchgear within the scope of the existing site. 3

Low oper- -ating costs, minimal maintenance requirement and long service life of the system additionally help to reduce life-cycle costs. Conversion is readily possible using factory preassembled and tested units. In addition, HIS fits easily into your existing control and protection concept whether it is conventional, digital or process-bus based with SICA HV. In this way, HIS can be integrated cost-effectively and flexibly in your substation. Low investment cost Computer-aided Engineering Tools and compact supply units enable short planning and delivery times. By virtue of the small, compact bay structure, only a few foundations are necessary. Civil works are reduced to a minimum, so that even in mountainous, rocky terrain, construction presents no problems. The switchgear is delivered to the site in already preassembled and tested units. This significantly reduces the time required between issuing the contract and handover of the complete switchgear to the client. In addition, HIS requires only half the ground area of airinsulated switchgear. Extension of existing outdoor switchgear is, to a large extent, possible during operation. For this purpose, it is only necessary to isolate subsections of the equipment for a short time. This minimizes switchgear outage time. In this way, you keep investment cost down and ensure early commissioning. Safe, reliable operation The operating personnel are protected from contact with live parts by virtue of the enclosed construction. Integrated disconnectors and earthing switches on the busbar and outgoing feeder side permit risk-free isolation and earthing of switchgear sections. Outgoing feeder earthing switches can also be supplied in the make-proof high-speed version. Release of conductor connections to establish isolating sections and the use of mobile earth rods can be avoided. Rupture diaphragms with defined directions of discharge prevent unacceptably high pressure rise in the enclosures. Bay construction on one level assists straightforward layout of the switchgear. In addition to operator safety, the HIS solution provides excellent protection against vandalism. If a fault should occur it can be quickly remedied. Replacement of complete bays is possible at short notice, so that downtime of the switchgear is reduced to a minimum. Replacement parts are available from current production within 24 hours. Thus, you ensure maximum safety for your personnel and your switchgear and reliable operation. Environmentally compatible The environment also benefits from your HIS. The oil-free operating mechanism and the extremely effective sealing of the enclosure prevent any environmental contamination. Their long service life and minimal space requirement additionally conserve resources. This means that you are protecting the environment for the future. Impervious to damage and maintenance-free Once the switchgear is operational, it will operate reliably and require minimal maintenance for at least 50 years. Only after 10 years do we recommend an initial visual inspection. Being completely enclosed, the cleaning required is also minimal. The high quality of the switchgear is a result of comprehensive quality management. The enclosures are corrosion-resistant aluminum castings and the motor-operated mechanisms are selflubricating. The switchgear possesses no exposed contact systems and operating linkages, so that they are protected from external influences, even under corrosive environmental conditions. It is also aseismic and impervious to wind. This means that you can rely on your switchgear at all times with extremely low operating cost. 6 Compact by virtue of innovative technology HIS switchgear is three-phase encapsulated in order to achieve an extremely compact module size. The switchgear is clearly laid out on one level. Aluminum is used as enclosure material. As a result, the switchgear is free from corrosion and exceptionally lightweight. State-of-the-art design methods and casting techniques permit optimum dielectric and mechanical construction of the enclosures. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) is used as the insulating and arc-quenching gas. All modules are attached to one another by flanges. The gastightness of the flange joints is ensured by the Siemens O-ring sealing principle, proven over years of service. Gas-tight bushings permit subdivision of the bay into several distinct gas compartments. Each gas compartment is fitted with its own gas monitor, rupture diaphragm and filter material. Static filters absorb moisture and decomposition products. In the improbable event of a fault, bursting plates prevent unacceptably high pressure buildup in the enclosures. When they activate, diverter nozzles ensure defined direction of discharge of the gas. The outdoor-proof enclosures and operating mechanisms are fitted with space heaters. Screws and nuts are corrosion-proof. The interrupter unit and the actuating mechanism are based on proven, identical designs already widely used in outdoor and gasinsulated switchgear systems. Interrupter unit The interrupter unit used for arc quenching in the circuit-breaker operates on the self-compression principle. By virtue of the low operating energy required, very low mechanical forces occur. This results in a favorable effect on the mechanical loading of the circuit-breaker itself, on the enclosure and on the foundation design. The current path In the case of a self-compression circuit-breaker, the current path is formed by the contact support (1), the base (6) and the moving contact cylinder (5). In the closed condition, the operating current flows through the main contact (3). An arcing contact (4) is connected parallel to the main contact. Interruption of operating current During the breaking operation, the main contact (3) opens first and the current commutates on the arcing contact (4) which is still closed. By this means, erosion of the main contact is avoided. As the breaking operation progresses, an arc develops between the contacts (4). The contact cylinder (5) moves simultaneously in the base (6) and compresses the remaining arc-quenching gas. The compressed arc-quenching gas flows through the contact cylinder (5) into the contact gap and extinguishes the arc. Interruption of fault current If the short-circuit current is high, the arc quenching gas at the arcing contact is heated up considerably by the energy of the arc. This leads to a pressure rise in the contact cylinder. Consequently, the energy required for production of the arc quenching pressure does not have to be supplied by the operating mechanism. As the switching operation progresses, the fixed arcing contact releases the outflow from the nozzle (2). The gas now flows out of the contact cylinder and through the nozzle, thus extinguishing the arc. 8

It possesses a compact, corrosion-resistant aluminum enclosure. The closing spring, as well as the opening spring, are visibly arranged in the operating block. The entire operating unit is completely separated from the SF 6 gas compartments. The use of antifriction bearings and a maintenance-free charging mechanism assure reliable operation for decades. The moving contact either closes the isolating gap or connects the high-voltage conductor to the fixed contact of the earthing switch. This design ensures natural mechanical interlocking of the two functions in relation to one another, which subsequently no longer need be taken into account in the electrical interlocking of the bay. The fixed contact of the earthing switch is brought out of the enclosure for test purposes. In a third neutral position, neither the disconnector nor the earthing switch contact is closed. The three poles of a bay are mechanically interconnected; thus all three poles are operated jointly with a single motor-operated mechanism. Power transmission inside the enclosure is effected by means of compressed gastight, rotary insulating shafts. Alarm switches and contact position indicators are mechanically reliable and are attached directly to the operating shaft. anual emergency operation is possible. The high-speed earthing switch is a moving-contact earthing switch. The moving contacts at earth potential slide in the case of this switch into the tulipshaped fixed contacts. The earthing switch is fitted with a stored-energy spring mechanism which is charged by means of an electric motor. High-speed earthing switch Optimized-performance current transformer module Current and voltage transformers are employed for the purpose of measurement and protection. They are supplied in numerous variants from conventional transformers, right up to state-of-the-art current and voltage sensors. Current transformer module Generally, optimized-performance inductive current transformers are used. The current transformer can be integrated anywhere in the bay and substation construction. The high-voltage conductor forms the primary winding. The cores with secondary windings are designed in accordance with accuracy class rating and performance requirements. Tapchanging to the different transformation ratios is made possible by secondary connections of current transformers. The latter are brought out of the enclosure via a gas-tight bushing plate and are electrically accessible in the transformer terminal box underneath the circuit-breaker. Voltage transformer module Both inductive and optimizedperformance voltage transformers are employed. Voltage transformers can be arranged on either side of the outgoing feeder disconnector. The secondary connections are brought out of the enclosure via a gastight bushing plate and are electrically accessible in the transformer terminal box underneath the circuit-breaker. 11 Termination modules SF 6 /air termination with integrated surge arrester Extension module Termination modules Termination modules link the HIS bays to the equipment by means of the following: Overhead line Transformer or reactor Cable. Thus, they form the transition from the SF 6 gas insulation inside the enclosure to other insulating media. Cable termination module This three-phase encapsulated module links the metalenclosed HIS switchgear to a high-voltage cable. In the cable termination module, it is readily possible to connect all common types of high-voltage cables. It is possible to employ both conventional and plug-in cable sealing ends. SF 6 /air termination/ surge arrester The transition from the HIS switchgear to air-insulated switchgear modules or overhead lines is accomplished by the single-phase SF 6 /air bushing termination. It can take the form of a composite or porcelain insulator. This connection is a combination of singlephase connecting modules and SF 6 /air bushings. Overall length, shield shape and creepage path will be designed according to insulation coordination, minimum clearance and degree of pollution. The SF 6 /air termination is suitable for air-insulated connections of HIS to: Overhead lines Transformer or reactor bushings High-voltage cables sealing ends. The innovative design of HIS gives the possibility to integrate a surge arrester into the overhead line bushing, which results in additional space saving. Splitting of the connections of the three phases to achieve the necessary clearance in air for conductor insulation between one another is 45. Transformer termination module The single-phase transformer termination module is connected, like the SF 6 /air termination, by means of a combination of link modules to the three-phase encapsulated basic bay. It provides the facility of transition from the gas insulation directly to the bushing of oil-insulated transformers or reactors. 12 Control and onitoring Uniform and flexible control and protection system Proven and innovative switchgear control All the elements required for control and monitoring are accommodated in a decentralized arrangement in the high-voltage switching devices. The switching device control systems are factory-tested and the switchgear is usually supplied with bay-internal cabling all the way to the neutral bay interface. This minimizes the time required for commissioning and reduces the scope for possible faults. As standard, the control and monitoring system is made up of electromechanical components. Alternatively, the digital intelligent control and protection system SICA HV with comprehensive diagnostics and monitoring functions is available. ore detailed information on the substation state means that maintenance intervals can be geared to the condition of the switchgear. Lift-cycle costs can consequently be reduced even further. Gas monitoring Gas-tight insulating partitions divide each bay into functionally distinct gas compartments (circuit-breaker, disconnector, voltage transformer, etc.). The gas compartments are under constant observation by means of density monitors with integrated indicator; any nonconformity is immediately signaled. The optionally available monitoring system with SICA HV includes sensors that allow a trend forecast for each gas compartment. Flexible and reliable protection in bay and substation control Control and feeder protection are accommodated in a separately installed control cubicle. If requested, we can of course supply the HIS switchgear featuring any customary bay and substation control equipment. We provide uniform systems to meet your individual requirements. Neutral interfaces in the switchgear control allow link-up of a conventional control system with contactor interlocking and control panel digital control and protection comprising user-friendly bay controllers and substation automation with PC operator stations (HI) an intelligent, uniformly networked digital control and protection system with supplementary monitoring and telediagnostics functions. 13 Transport, installation, commissioning & maintenance Transport Erection and installation Commissioning aintenance In order to permit optimum shipping and installation on site, our switchgear units are transported in the largest manageable shipping units. The heights of the modules are tailored to comply with standardized container dimensions, in order to ensure cost-effective transportation throughout the world. In shipping modules which contain switching elements, all operating attachments are factory-set on dispatch. Necessary shipping splits are corrosionprotected and sealed with transport covers. Packing of the material to be shipped is selected according to the type of shipment, duration and means of transport, and nature and duration of storage. If necessary, sealed packing is provided which will be suitable for ocean shipment and a transport and storage duration of up to 12 months. In special cases, sealed packing can also be designed for a longer period. Delivery of factory pre-assembled units significantly reduces labor cost and time taken for installation on site. The shipping modules are transported with the aid of simple equipment to the installation site and aligned for assembly. By virtue of the compact bay dimensions, minimal foundations are necessary. Excavation is reduced to a minimum. The modules can easily be maneuvered and quickly adjusted. Only minimal anchoring and additional steel supports are necessary. On the secondary side, the only work to be done is cabling between the bays. Simple operations, detailed installation instructions and the use of only a few special tools permit quick, simple installation of the switchgear, even by customer personnel under the supervision of an experienced Siemens engineer. If required, you can avail yourself of our range of training facilities. After completion of installation, all switchgear and electrical circuits for control and monitoring are checked for proper mechanical and electrical function. Flanged joints assembled on site are examined for gastightness. All other flanged joints have already been tested at our factory. The tests are carried out in accordance with IEC 517. Final test reports document the results. Our HIS switchgear units have been designed and manufactured to ensure optimum balance between design, materials used and maintenance work necessary. Time needed for cleaning has been reduced to a minimum, because the switchgear is thoroughly enclosed. The cast aluminum enclosures are corrosion resistant and the motoroperated mechanisms are self lubricating. Under normal operating conditions, our HIS switchgear units can be considered maintenance-free. We recommend an initial visual inspection only after 10 years, with the first overhaul after 25 years. 14 Quality Assurance Technical Data The quality of Siemens gas-insulated switchgear is assured by continuous, progressive Quality anagement. This has been certified since 1983 in accordance with CSA Z299 and since 1989 in accordance with DIN EN For us, Quality Assurance means that our processes are primarily customer-oriented. The Quality Assurance system includes all operations of the product life-cycles, from marketing to development and service. Regular anagement Reviews and internal and external audits for all processes ensure that this system is constantly effective and upto-date. The basis is formed by continuous documentation of all operations relating to quality. This means that our switchgear meets even the very highest standards of quality. Consistent Quality anagement naturally also extends to the production of our switchgear. Assembly in clean rooms, combined with comprehensive process inspection and routine tests on components, sub-assemblies and modules, ensure reliable switchgear operation. The mechanical routine tests are followed, as final quality verification prior to shipment, by the high-voltage routine test on the complete bay, or on the complete shipping modules.
