The CMS performs sensor monitoring control for Novar s Spectrum refrigeration control system. The CMS uses the s case, product, and defrost temperature sensors to control refrigeration and defrost cycles for refrigeration cases, walk-in freezers, and so on. The sensor is designed as a two-piece assembly to facilitate easy replacement (see Figure 1 and Figure 2). The sensor consists of 26 (8 m) of cabling; a weather-resistant, in-line connector; and a torpedostyle, thermistor sensor with 7 (17.8 cm) of cable. 2 This document provides instructions for properly installing the sensor. 3 Figure 3. 8m Non-Sensor Portion of the Sensor Assembly Installing Mounting Surface Temperature Application The following items are needed for proper installation: Two cable ties when mounting the sensor for surface temperature sensing A cable clamp when mounting the sensor for airflow temperature sensing The sensor can be mounted for surface temperature sensing or in the direct airflow of an area or zone application. For surface temperature sensing, mount the CMS sensor to the surface as shown in figure 4. For the latest technical documentation, visit 3

Surface Mounted Sensor NOTE: When mounting the sensor for surface temperature sensing, the torpedo must make contact with the surface as much as possible (as shown in the circled area in the figure). Failure to do so will result in erroneous temperature readings. Airflow Temperature Application For airflow/zone temperature measurement, mount the sensor as shown in Figure 4. NOTE: When mounting the sensor for airflow temperature sensing, ensure the torpedo portion to the sensor is not in contact with any surface (as shown in the circled area in the figure). 5 Wiring Table 1 and Figure 5 list the Novar CMS module connector terminals that require CMS temperature sensor wiring. Although Novar recommends using an sensor at the defrost input, which provides a true analog measured value that can be configured for continual monitoring, you may also choose to fit a defrost termination thermostat (bi-metal switch) for this input. See the documentation provided with the thermostat for this type of configuration. The CMS has captive, wire-cage terminal connectors. To wire the sensor: 1. Ensure the lead ends are stripped to 0.25 inch. 2. Loosen the terminal connector screws to open the connector cage. 3. Now insert the leads taking care not to tighten the terminal connector cage onto the wire insulation. 4. Tighten the connector terminal screw using a maximum torque of 5 Inch-Pounds (0.565 Newton-Meters). Although the sensor is not polarity sensitive, best practices indicate that the sensor s red and black cable color code should be associated with the + and connector terminals respectively. CMS Input Terminal Locations Checking the Installation Troubleshooting On completion of the CMS wiring (power, display, communication, and sensors), check the following items to ensure proper sensor operation: Use the CMS display to monitor the sensor input and verify proper operation (see Case Management System Installation (CMS).pdf Checking Installation at Check the wiring to make sure that the connector screw terminal is fully tightened on the wire and not the wire insulation. When proper operation is not observed, to determine if the sensor is at fault: 5. Disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance with a digital multimeter (multimeter set to resistance or Ω). 6. Measure the resistance of the sensor while simultaneously measuring the temperature at the sensor s torpedo location. 7. Compare the resistance and temperature measurements using the Type-J Thermistor Temperature-to-Resistance Chart below. If the measured temperature and resistance values are accurate, the chart data should match. 8. Grasp the center-cap of the in-line connector, twist it counterclockwise, and pull the connector apart (see Figure 6). 2. To assemble the replacement sensor, follow the steps in the reverse order. 8 3. Before attaching the replacement sensor, ensure the in-line connector s o-ring seal is in the sensor s portion of the connector. Figure 7.
