4 1. Safety information 1. Safety information 1.1 Purpose of the unit On board voltage The intended use of this unit is to provide special purpose vehicles with visual protection. This unit is intended to be operated in special purpose vehicles with an on board voltage of 12 V and 24 V and supports a multi voltage range from 9 to 32 V. 1.2 General safety information Used symbols The following safety relevant symbols are present in this manual:! WRNING Indicates dangerous situations that can lead to death or serious injuries if the safety information is not observed.! CUTION Indicates dangerous situations that can cause slight injuries if the safety information is not observed. BEWRE Indicates actions that can cause property damage. NOTE Indicates helpful andor complementary user information. State of the art The unit was manufactured according to the current state of the art and applicable safety regulations. However, dangers may still arise if the safety information in this manual is ignored. 4

Information about this manual 2.1 Scope of application of this manual The recommendations for operating the unit described in this document are based on the current laws and regulations of the Federal Republic of Germany. The laws and regulations of other countries may vary from these recommendations and must be observed accordingly. 2.2 Storing the manual This document contains important information on the operation of this unit and must be stored together with vehicle specific documents and other documents regarding the operation of the special signalling system! 5

Unit information 3.1 Unit overview Depending on the application and version, the beacons Comet, Saturn, Nova are used to identify special purpose vehicles or to protect hazardous areas. High voltage! 1 Before opening the unit, disconnect it from the power supply and wait at least 1 minute. 1 pplies only to units with Xenon flash technology. To mount the device (see chapter 4.1), it may have to be opened. The following procedure must be followed: Step Explanation Loosen the locking screw (2 screws for NOV L) of the lamp dome. Place the lamp dome on the housing and position it so that the bayonet lock and the connecting bars in the housing can be locked together. Turn the lamp dome clockwise onto the housing until the bayonet lock closes completely (116 turn). Proper installation and alignment based on the following requirements must be ensured: Observe the requirements of the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVZO) 52, articles 3 & 4. Observe the requirements of the»merkblatt über die nbaubedingungen von Kennleuchten«(information leaflet on the installation requirements of beacons). Observe the requirements of the vehicle manu facturer and the system supplier. Should you have any questions regarding the installation, contact the system supplier and the vehicle manufacturer. BEWRE Incorrectly mounted and incorrectly aligned beacons can cause damage to the unit or vehicle! Professional mounting and alignment according to the following requirements must be ensured: The aeration vents (Ø 3 mm) in the beacon housing must never be sealed, because otherwise water condensation will accumulate in the beacon! The flow of air must always be possible! The lenses (resp. flash tubes) of the beacons must not be touched! The alignment of the beacon (see direction information printed on the bottom of the socket) must be observed for the convoy function! When a beacon is mounted on an uneven surface, it must not be tilted! 10

Professional mounting and alignment according to the following requirements must be ensured: The accompanying rubber seal must be placed between the beacon and the vehicle roof during the installation. To ensure the flow of air, the seal (if necessary after being used as a drilling template) must be indented 4 mm. Draw (use accompanying rubber seal as drilling template) and drill the mounting holes in the vehicle roof (observe the alignment for the convoy function, if installed). Position the rubber seal on the vehicle roof (place the holes in the rubber seal above the holes in the vehicle roof). Position the beacon on the rubber seal (use the holes in the rubber seal to locate the screw connections). 14 4. Operating the unit Mounting [2 mounting holes]: To install, first the lamp dome must be removed from the housing (see chapter 3.2). Next, the beacon must be installed as follows: Step Explanation 1. Drill the countersunk screw connections (next to the press nuts) inside the housing to the desired diameter (e.g. 5.5 mm). Draw (use accompanying rubber seal as drilling template) and drill the mounting holes in the vehicle roof (observe the alignment for the convoy function, if installed). Position the rubber seal on the vehicle roof (place the holes in the rubber seal above the holes in the vehicle roof). Position the beacon on the rubber seal (use the holes in the rubber seal to locate the screw connections). Screw on the beacon (e.g. with M5 screw and washer). Magnets can have a negative impact on the functioning of pacemakers and implanted defibrillators! For their own safety, individuals wearing such devices are prohibited from handling the beacon.! CUTION Magnets produce a broad, strong magnetic field. They can damage hearing aids, laptops, televisions, credit cards, EC cards, data media, mechanical timepieces and loudspeakers, among other things. Inspect the rubber protection of the magnets for dirt and clean if necessary (do not use any solvents!). Inspect the rubber protection of the magnets for damage. 2 Inspect the area of the vehicle roof where the fixture is to be positioned for dirt, and clean if necessary (observe manufacturer s specifications!). Place the beacon on a continuously magnetic metal surface of the vehicle roof (the curvature of this area must have a radius > 3000 mm). Once in place, the radiation of the beacon must be parallel to the road level (permissible deviation ± 5 ) Use of the unit with a damaged magnet is not allowed. The connections (N) of the PCB allow the unit to be connected to the power supply of the special purpose vehicle by different connecting cables and plugs. The type of connection and the pin assignment of the plugs differ depending on the version of the unit (CN447 or analogue). The following illustrations show the different elec tronic versions with the associated connection. Daynight switching Colour switching With this version, daynight switching is either automatic or by a switch. The switch is located, protected under a plastic cap, on the bottom of the beacon. For 2 colour beacons, the switch on the universal plug can be used to switch the colour (blue = 0 amber = I ). 21

NOTE Make sure that water does not get into the unit through the aeration vents when it is being cleaned. Minimum distance It is safe to use steam jets andor high pressure cleaners to clean the unit. lways keep a minimum distance of 0.5 m from the unit!
