MARKET REPORT WEEK 24 &25 BASED ON SALES AND PURCHASES OF VESSELS WEEK ENDED FRIDAY 24 TH JUNE 2016. Due to last Mondays holiday in Greece this report covers the past 2 weeks and interestingly the BDI closed week 25 on 609 which is almost exactly the same level we saw at the close of week 23 (610). In the meantime however, the BDI dipped 23 points to 587 and then bounced back again last week. Basically, it seems, that since the dry freight market broke above the 600 barrier in week 15 and peaked (so far this year) at 688 at the close of week 16, it has since continued to flounder around in the low 600 levels - and frankly we don't see it moving much above or below such levels for some time yet. It is the continuing low dry freight levels with no prospects of a quick recovery which continues to give interested buyers of such vessels a dilemma, i.e. do they buy now in the knowledge that they are almost certainly paying near bottom of the market prices but will likely have to carry the vessel financially for a year or two, or do they wait longer before they buy at the risk of values increasing before they have brought. Clearly, by the number of sales we are reporting in recent weeks, there are currently plenty of buyers preferring to buy now in order they can select their purchases while sellers have little bargaining power, and notably the buying pressure is now such that beyond the usual buying preference for Japanese and Korean built units we are seeing more of the less preferred China and even Vietnam built units sold. The wet S+P market, is currently much less active than the dry and that is because buyers sense tanker values are on the decline in which case they should wait. This is not due to declining oil and product movements as indeed volumes are, if anything, increasing y-o-y. It is because of shipping's recent Achilles Heel of too much investment finding its way into speculative newbuildings. The combined tanker newbuilding orderbook for deliveries in 2016/17/18/19 is currently region: 125 VLCC's, 100 Suezmaxes, 140 Aframaxes, 60 LR2's, 60 LR1's, and over 200 MR's. The re-cycling markets, especially in the sub continent, remain much less active on the buying side recently. We don't think this is local budget related, and is more likely due to the yards having plenty of stock ships in hand due to their heavy buying in the first 5 months of 2016, combined with Ramadan and the onset of the monsoon season. Accordingly levels on offer remain at the reduced levels circa $245-260 for Bulkers and $265-280 for tankers and container vessels. 1
