MARKET REPORT WEEK 46 BASED ON SALES AND PURCHASES OF VESSELS WEEK ENDED FRIDAY 14 TH NOVEMBER 2014. With Bird Flu reportedly having returned to the UK (not ideal just before Christmas), the shipping market in general remains on the sick list... The BDI went negative in all sectors last week, ending on Friday down by -12.5%. As we had suspected the BCI's reversal into negativity at the end of week 45 did indeed carry on into week 46 to the tune of -20%, duly marking the end of the recent 'short bull run' due to stockpiling in China brought on by cheaper coal and ore prices. As is usually the case, once the cape freight market falls a similar shadow falls over the BPI and indeed the panamaxes declined a further -8% last week on top of their -4% fall the week before. Meanwhile the BSI and BHSI also continued their lighter negative trends of the past 5 straight weeks, each last week weakening by just less than -1%. On the dry S+P side it appears quite a few recent negotiations managed to conclude last week judging by the decent number of sales reported across a wide range of size and age vessels. Greek buyers appear to have been the most active. We would suggest that the above reported freight market negativity (and the likelihood of more to come) has been the catalyst for buyers and sellers to more easily find common ground on values. On the wet side a steady trickle of tanker sales continue to conclude in both the crude and products sectors with values being either maintained or slightly enhanced relative to last done. The sub-continent recycling markets remain in some disarray due mainly to the unwelcome influence of cheap Chinese billets causing local steel prices to fall. Accordingly we see only limited demolition sales reported last week and they are generally at softer levels in the mid $400's. 1
