If possble, depressurze the ppe before attemptng any nstallaton. Install a 2" (50mm) full port valve (ball valve, corporaton stop or gate valve) wth a 2" (50mm) NPT female ppe thread output for the sensor. Follow any and all nstallaton nstructons provded for the valve that you have chosen. The valve can be nstalled onto a welded couplng or ppe saddle. See Fgure 7. Alternatve ball valve or corporaton stop szes may be used or requred. Consult factory for alternatve confguratons. IMPORTANT: The MINIMUM port nsde dameter for all nstallaton valves s 1-7/8" (48mm). Note: Female threads are NPT Male threads are AWWA. Ppe Saddle Wth Ball Valve Welded Ppe Npple Wth Ball Valve Corporaton Stop 4.4 Meter Dsassembly For Installaton Fgure 7: Installaton Valve Optons When nstallng large meters, t can be desrable to remove the compresson seal assembly from the rest of the meter and nstall t onto the valve separately. The followng steps descrbe the separaton of the sensor, top-plate and retanng rods from the compresson seal assembly. 4.4.1 The compresson seal has two bolts and two studs wth nuts. Loosen the bolts and nuts on the compresson seal relevng the pressure on the compresson seal. Do not remove the bolts or nuts. 4.4.2 On the compresson seal assembly, remove the lockng cotter pns from the bottom of the two retanng rods under the 3/8" or 1/2" nuts. 7

4.4.3 Remove the 3/8" or 1/2" nuts from the retanng rods. 4.4.4 Slde the sensor out of the compresson seal. The retanng rods wll also slde out of the compresson seal assembly. Carefully set the sensor and attached hardware to the sde. 4.4.5 At ths pont the compresson seal assembly can be nstalled onto the valve. 4.5 Compresson Seal Assembly Installaton The sensor assembly uses a compresson seal, whch keeps the sensor watertght when the ppe s under pressure. Care must be taken when nstallng the sensor, to avod leaks. 4.5.1 Vsually nspect all elements of the nstallaton to nsure they are structurally sound and of hgh qualty materals, ncludng all welds, couplngs and npples. To prevent future corroson, npples should be hgh qualty stanless steel. 4.5.2 Put a generous amount of the suppled ppe sealant on the compresson seal threads. Teflon tape may also be used. NOTE: f ppe sealant gets on the sensor electrodes the velocty sgnal may be lost. 4.5.3 Place the compresson seal threads over the ppe valve. Turn the entre sensor assembly clockwse to secure the assembly to the valve. 4.5.4 The seal s secure when a large amount of force s requred to turn the assembly. Lne up the arrow (on the top plate) wth the drecton of the flow. The sdes of the bottom plate should be parallel wth the ppe. Bottom Plate Compresson Seal Assembly Compresson Seal Threads Fgure 8: Sensor Installaton 8

4.6 Meter Re-assembly After Compresson Seal Assembly Installaton 4.6.1 Apply water to the nteror surface of the seal gland. Ths wll act as a lubrcant to facltate the nserton of the sensor and ensure ts proper axal loadng. Insert the sensor nto the compresson seal n the bottom plate whle nsertng the two retanng rods nto ther respectve holes n the bottom plate and secure wth 3/8" or 1/2" nuts above and below the bottom plate. NOTE: Insure the end of the retanng rod nserted nto the bottom plate has holes for the lockng cotter pns. Insure the two nuts above and below the compresson seal assembly are suffcently tghtened to prevent the threaded rod from rotatng. 4.6.2 Insert the lockng cotter pns through the small holes n the bottom of the retanng rods, just below the 3/8" or 1/2" nuts. IMPORTANT! When nsertng the retanng rods, ensure the end has a hole for the lockng cotter pn.! 4.7 Insertng The Sensor Fgure 9: Sensor Installaton The sensor can be nstalled whle the lne s under flowng condtons. The lne water velocty should be as low as possble to prevent sensor vbraton durng the nserton process. The velocty must be under 5 ft/s. WARNING! The compresson seal/sensor assembly may be under pressure. Serous njury may result f proper procedures are not followed. Do not attempt to nstall the sensor wthout the retanng rods fully assembled. 9 Fgure 10: Sensor Vbraton If the meter was dsassembled to assst n the nstallaton of the compresson seal assembly on to the valve (Secton 4.4) t s mportant to nsure that the meter s properly reassembled wth both retanng rods completely nstalled wth the 3/8" or 1/2" nuts properly tghtened. 4.7.1 Insure the two compresson seal bolts are hand tghtened. 4.7.2 Barely crack open the valve and tghten compresson seal bolts as requred to mnmze leaks. A towel draped around the compresson seal can reduce spray f necessary. 4.7.3 Open the valve completely. Falure to open the valve completely wll cause the valve to scrape the sensor durng nsertons and may result n permanent damage to the sensor.

4.7.4 Insert the sensor nto the ppe by smultaneously rotatng the two captve nuts on the top plate clockwse untl the foot of the sensor reaches the far wall of the ppe and the load sprng s compressed. See Secton 4.7.5. It s recommended that the Sensor Inserton Tool be used to rotate the captve nuts to nsure the top plate compresses evenly. See Secton 4.8. If a sensor nserton tool s not avalable, tghten the captve nuts usng the two ratchet wrenches provded wth the flow meter. IMPORTANT If the captve nuts are not tghtened smultaneously, the top plate wll become crooked and cause the sensor to be nserted at an angle and may cause permanent damage to the sensor. Captve Nuts Rotate captve nuts clockwse smultaneously to nsert sensor Fgure 11: Captve Nuts NOTE If the short retanng rods are not used (see Sect on 4.9), run a 3/8" or 1/2" nut down aganst each captve nut to prevent the captve nut from rotatng. 4.7.5 A load s now appled at the top of the sensor forcng the bottom of the sensor to seat aganst the far wall. Ths keeps the sensor frmly n place aganst the far wall of the ppe. The amount of load s ndcated by the three lnes and set screw at the top of the sensor. See Fgure 11. The bottom lne ndcates a 300-lb. load. Recommended sensor loads are 300 lbs. or less for low pressure plastc ppes and 450 lbs. for low pressure metal ppes. For applcatons other than low pressure the sensor load should be ncreased. Follow the nstructons below untl the set screw s between the top and mddle lnes. Consult factory for the approprate loadng for your applcaton. 4.7.6 Rotate the two captve nuts on the top plate untl the proper load s ndcated If usng the Inserton Tool, rotate the two captve nuts usng only the low gear shaft untl the proper load s ndcated. DO NOT use the hgh gears on the nserton tool as ths may create too much load too fast and damage the sensor or the ppe. Low Pressure Metal Ppes Low Pressure Plastc Ppes Fgure 12: Sensor Load Indcators 4.7.7 Tghten the compresson seal bolts agan. NOTE: tghten compresson seal bolts/nuts just enough to stop the seal from leakng. Do not overtghten the compresson seal as t may cause damage to the seal tself. 10

4.8 Sensor Inserton Tool McCrometer recommends usng a Sensor Inserton Tool (P/N 75031 for 3/8" rods, and P/N 75032 for 1/2" rods) to help wth nsertng the sensor and to avod any damage to the sensor. Place the Sensor Inserton Tool over the captve nuts and lock t nto place wth sprng locks located on the bottom of the tool. Usng the provded wrench rotate the hgh gear shaft clockwse untl the bottom of the sensor reaches the far wall of the ppe. The low gear shaft s used to apply pressure to the sensor once the sensor has reached the far wall of the ppe. See Secton 4.7.5. Fgure 13: Inserton Tool IMPORTANT Large lne sze meters or applcatons wth hgh pressure may use 1/2" retanng rods. When orderng the Sensor Inserton Tool specfy the sze requred. 4.5 4-20mA Hook-Up Isolated 4-20mA current loops are used to output flow data to external devces. Maxmum load mpedance s 1,000Ω, and the maxmum voltage wthout load s 27VDC. The converter has the capablty to detect a loss of load on ths output. To dsable ths functon set the value ma Val. Fault under the ALARMS menu to zero (See Secton 8.4.6). A graphcal example of the usage of the current loop wth external devce s shown below: + - Termnal 25 FORWARD FLOW OUT1 4-20mA 4-20mA Devces + - Termnal 26 REVERSE FLOW OUT2 4-20mA Termnal 27 COMMON OUT 1 / OUT2 4-20mA IMPORTANT - RESISTOR REMOVAL FOR 4-20mA OUTPUTS It s requred to remove the resstors from termnals 25 & 27 and/or 26 & 27 before attachng 4-20mA cables. FORWARD FLOW: Remove the resstor from termnals 25 and 27. REVERSE FLOW: Remove the resstor from termnals 26 and 27. See Secton 4.2 Termnal Board, Fgure 5. Fgure 11: 4-20mA Hook-Up If the external devce requres a voltage nput, a precson resstor placed across the nput termnals of the external devce wll change the current to voltage. Calculate the requred resstor usng Ohm s law (V = I x R). For example, a 250Ω resstor wll provde an nput voltage of one to fve volts wth the transmtter range beng set from 4mA to 20mA. An addtonal 4 to 20mA loop output s avalable. IMPORTANT The converter powers the 4-20mA loops. Do not use external power for the 4-20mA loop as t may cause permanent damage to the converter. 17
