Well, here it is September and we've made it most of the way through a very hot and dry summer. I don t know about you, but I sure did a lot of sweating with all the projects I have to work on. I m looking forward to some less hellish temperatures. There are lots of shows coming up this time of year and our club has a few. If you're inclined to travel, you could probably go to a show almost every weekend. There are a few national shows also a person should go to at least once in his or her life. I love going to the big shows because of the variety of things to see, and some of these things I have never seen before. Alvin Labor Day Show

5 Member Spotlight Corwin Horn Well I finally got time to write down a few thoughts and as it turned out this is a hard assignment. How did I get involved with tractors? The answer is quite simple, there wasn t a choice. I grew up on the farm and from the earliest days there was some form of tractor, combine, implement, truck, or other related agricultural tool close at hand. I looked for a picture, but didn t find anything earlier than eight years old. However, I have very good memories of riding on the combine with my Dad while harvesting rice at a much younger age.

6 My first memory of tractor driving was on a Ford 8N. I would drive the tractor around the farm until it ran out of gas and then would walk back to the barn. Needless to say, I also learned how to fill the gas tank at an early age as well. Given the start on the farm I grew up loving the rural way of life and quickly gravitated to a farm operation of my own. For the most part that consisted of raising rice and soybeans in an area just West of Beaumont. Those 20 years or so proved to be some of the best ever. During my tenure as a farmer I owned just about every kind, type and configuration of tractor made. Brand really didn t matter too much. The best deal often was more important than a color. Although I can say if I had a nickel for every hour spent in the seat of a Case, a John Deere, a Massey, or a Steiger, money would never be a concern again. In the very early days as a child the brand of choice was Moline. I missed most of the tractor operation of that day because I was too young, but I still have fond memories of the old iron used on the farm. For the most part we used Moline U s, G s, and GB s. Later we ran a few of the 705 and 706 style tractors both of which were well ahead of their time or so it seemed. There was also a Moline hay bailer, and a Moline combine that I can remember. Neither the combine nor the hay bailer stayed around very long. I think the only reason we kept them as long as we did was because one of the relatives in the family was the Moline dealer. Over time things changed and the job in the city had a lot better financial appeal. However, the longing for the simple days of the farm never went away. While I am a relatively new member to the Bluebonnet Tractor Club, I could not think of a better way to keep the old ties to the farm than showing off some of my prize projects. As most people in the club already know, I have a restored Moline 335 that belonged to my Uncle who was also the dealer in the area. It is by far the one piece of equipment that stirs the most emotion. I also have a Moline BF (Avery) that is in the shop for restoration. Other than those two my tractor collection includes more than 100 toys and collectables, a restored pedal tractor (IH), and a Ford 101 plow. I have become a little more interested in the pedal tractors and small implements in the past few years simply because the barn is full of other projects. It is a blessing that my son Jonathan has taken a keen interest in the old iron and although still studying mechanical engineering at Texas A&M, may be the link in our family that continues the antique tractor habit to the next generation. My wife Jane and I now live just outside Beaumont in a small community known as Gilbert Lake. 10 Jack Saylor's JD H Bobby Wright's 6 hp H&M Tech Section Fairbanks Morse & Company This quarter we will talk about a well known company, that being, Fairbanks Morse. The Fairbanks Morse company has root all the way back to 1823 when Thaddeus Fairbanks owned a small foundry. Later his brother Erastus joined the company and they became E & T Fairbanks Company. In the 1820 s hemp was becoming popular for its fiber. The brothers produced a hemp dressing machine. The company needed a way to measure the weight of the hemp accurately to pay farmers for their product, but there were no scales on the market that where suitable, so they made their own. The hemp trade didn t work out for the brothers, but the scales were a huge success. They went on to sale a large number of scales, even today Fairbanks scales are known for their accuracy. During 1869 Charles Hosmer Morse went to work for a branch office in Chicago. In 1871 the Chicago fire destroyed the office. The very next day Mr. Morse salvaged what he could of the records and opened an office and it was called the Fairbanks & Morse Company. Because of Mr. Morse, the Fairbanks scales started to be sold nation wide. The company branched off into many other areas. One area was mining equipment. Later in 1867 they started selling the Eclipse Windmill. At one time they carried so many different industrial items they were known as the Sears & Roebuck of the industrial world. Around 1893 Fairbanks & Morse started selling a gas engine made by Charter Gas Engines. This engine was to be the base design when Fairbanks Morse started building their own engines starting around Fairbanks Morse got into the engine market in a big way, selling stationary engines, train engines, ship engines and engines to municipalities for power generation. Because Fairbanks Morse had such a large dealer network, they were able to sell more engines than any other company. They even out sold International Harvester. Fairbanks Morse built a good engine at a fair price. If you go to any shows, you are guaranteed to see a few engines because of how well they were built and because parts are still fairly easy to find. I myself have 10 Fairbanks Morse engines.

About now you may be wondering what does Fairbanks Morse have to do with tractors?

The first is a prototype. I m not sure of the year of the second and the third and forth is from Fairbanks Morse is now part of Colt industries, (yes, the gun company), and build large ship engines under that name. Back when Fairbanks Morse were building stationary engines they could not find a satisfactory magneto, so in 1922 they started building mags for their engines. Their mags turned out to be so good other companies started buying them for their own engines and tractors. Other then International Harvester, you will be hard pressed to find a tractor company that did not use Fairbanks Morse magnetos on at least a few models.

Great tractor for restoration, was a factory diesel but the engine has been replaced with the gas engine. Will include a 5 ft. brush hog (works but needs some deck work) and blade. The tractor did originally have power steering but does not at this time, it does steer relatively easy compared to some other tractors. It has a charging system issue as the previous owner changed the generator out for an alternator but did not wire the regulator. There is a small oil leak from the steering sector shaft. The hydraulics work good as well as the PTO, engine starts easy and does not smoke. The bush hog deck has a crack on the gearbox mounting plate and needs to be welded or a stiffener added to it.
